A large bell rang, and she woke up. She is naked, in the middle of a desert street. It's neither hot, nor cold, there is no wind, no sound, and there doesn't seem to be anyone or anything around. There is no sun, no clouds in the sky, all she sees is just a small bunch of grey buildings ahead. As she nears it,  covering herself with her arms as best she could, the buildings appear like shapeless grey cement cubes with pitch black windows. She shouts a hesitant "Hello!" and the only sound that answered her is the echo of her own voice.

Suddenly,  she sees a building: a supermarket identical to the one she worked in, years ago. She hurries inside, but there is no one.She goes to the back and finds the butcher's shop, with its white coat. The butcher's name on the name tag is the same. Odd. She eats food, and go back to exploring. Always, at the edge of her vision, are blurry dark shadows, but when she looks, there is no one there.

At the end of the first day, she falls asleep in the staff lounge of the supermarket, only to wake up naked, exactly where she fell asleep. The cup that she used is gone, the newspaper she had carried up to try to figure out what was going on had vanished, everything is reset perfectly to what it was the previous morning... With a loud sound that filled the air, the bell rings once, twice, three times. After getting the butcher's coat from its hook downstairs, she headed out and stopped dead in her tracks. There's a body in the middle of the street, naked and stirring. Not only that, but three buildings are no longer shapeless grey cubes. There are other buildings...

Got your attention yet? Here are the principles of the game:
  • Sandbox. Everyone comes up with their own plot, but as a GM I reserve the right to throw prompts to help forward the game plot.
  • Memories of life before waking up are spotty at best, and recovered slowly.
  • They wake up naked, in perfect health, regardless of their state when they died.
  • The world resets every morning, when the daytime comes, including the clothes on their back.
  • With each character comes a place that was significant in their life.
  • This is the place where people go when they've been too good for hell, but too bad for heaven, a sort of second chance to be sorted, if you will.
  • They have a number of chances, but when the balance tips too far off one side, the character leaves purgatory for heaven or hell.
  • The shadows are the vessels that will carry the souls to their final destination.

This is a creative idea, and I hope it takes off!  I think there would be a certain "standard" that would evolve in the location, right? I mean, they're all connected from life, or in some divine joke or plan, right? Otherwise purgatory would be the most crowded city imaginable *grin*

I'm interested if this world is more than just emptiness reflecting their old lives... Have you considered maybe the shadows are more animate? That they have personas and the world is more of a David Lynch/"Lost Highway" kind of surreal city that's just a bit off from their old world? Just an idea.

I can't understand the reference, I've never heard about Lynch.

I do have plans to have things evolved. The background setting isn't set in stone, because I want to see if there is interest before I delve into fleshing it out.

I thought of this could be some virtual reality experiment, or something. The shadows are my plot tools and nothing says that they're limited to carrying souls  out. What is considered to tip the balance one way or the other may or may not have to do with religious values/belief, etc.
