Prologue:

The town bells rang. They meant that there was danger approaching the town. On the horizon, a huge basilisk was approaching. It was easily the size of a large cathedral. The townspeople started to panic. Suddenly a group of figures flew over the town wall towards the monster. The figures were part of a special unit responsible for taking out the monster. Once near the monster, one of the figures arm split open revealing a gun barrel that was charging a bright blue light. With a loud bang, it shot a blue orb at the basilisk, hitting it. The basilisk let out a loud roar and swiped at one of the figures hitting them. The figure hit the ground with a bang, leaving a small crater. But then they got back up seemingly uninjured. The other figures began to pound the basilisk with their fists and guns until it collapsed. The group then charged their weapons and shot simultaneously at its head, blowing it to pieces. With that, the town was saved once again. As the figures made their way back into town, a crowd waited along the main street for the heroes to pass by. Little children stood in awe, wishing to be like them some day.

Plot: 20 years later

You are a young citizen (young adult) who goes by their boring work on a day to day basis, when hearing that the monster slaying unit is hiring new recruits. You decide to apply in hopes of becoming a great monster slayer. However only one in ten applicants is accepted. People are usually filtered out with a physical and psychological endurance test. Luckily you pass the test.

Monster slayers: Warriors specialized in killing monsters and protecting settlements. Due to physical stress they have to endure, their bodies are modified with an adamantium skeleton, magical gadgets and enhanced mana storage (they are practically magical cyborgs). Due to the magical nature of their enhancement, their options regarding their body are practically limitless, yet the power of the body is limited by the amount of mana (magical energy) it can store. That means one can focus solely on physical strength or can transform themselves into a war machine or a duo can fused together or choose that one transforms into a weapon an the other become the user.

Recruits usually attend a local academy part time to learn combat skills while the rest of the time they gain practical experience, usually practicing on slimes and other nearly harmless creatures which have an out of control population growth. It is recommended that monster slayers wear something tight, yet comfortable cuz a cape can be grabbed and a long necklace snagging somewhere can cost a head.

Location: Durandville, a town of about 20,000. On it's north side is a dry desert while on its south side is a tropical forest. Generally the climate is very warm. The people of the town tend to wear more colorful and cute clothing, stuff with frills and lace (like JRPG clothing).

Huh, never thought i'd see something like this here. Definitely keeping my eye on it, it's giving me all the Monster Hunter and God Eater vibes.

Gardsorm

Noisekick

Wow I didn't expect to find people who are interest so quickly. But yeah, it's supposed to be a bit like Monster Hunter just with magical cyborgs.

Juggtacular

I'd be down for this. Probably go for a guy who prioritizes strength/durability/speed over actual weapons and stuff. He just beats the monsters to death and looks good doing it, lol.

Kokaine

Im interested. Will see where my muse takes me as far as a character concept but Im thinking either enhanced bow and arrows for more ranged attacks or just a big ass battle axe.

Name: Aster Cross
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Appearance:

Other details of appearance include height, of which he stands at 5'9, and weighs somewhere around 161 lbs.

Clothing/Outfit:
Casual Outfit:
Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

Battle Outfit:
Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

Previous occupation: Bouncer
Weapon of choice: Heavy Cannon (Affectionately named 'Juggernaut')

Likes: Alot more than I can probably list, it'd be easier for me to list his dislikes.
Dislikes: The usual round of 'Too out there for the average person': Scat, Vore, Guro, Snuff, Torture, ect.

Personality: Perhaps a little too playful for his own good, Aster often makes light of many things, even his job. His lackadaisical behavior and antics may often clash with the personalities and interests of those around him (it varies, naturally), though when it's time to get serious, he knows how to get his shit together and pull his weight. For all of his laidback behavior, he does have buttons that, when pressed, will show people why he became a Monster Slayer in the first place. When off-duty he can usually be found in the nearest bar or club, drinking hard and flirting harder, earning him a reputation of being a bit of a manwhore to many a female, His change at present conflicts with his image prior to joining the Monster Slayers wildly, where he was touted at being one of the best at containing trouble and protecting workers in the Bouncer scene, but due to his lack of wanting to talk about it, it remains a mystery to his coworkers at present.
Sexuality: Heterosexual

Background: The self-proclaimed 'Heavy' of the Monster Slayers Division, Aster comes from distant lands on a new mission far different from his old. A resident all through middle class society, he often found himself fighting with tooth and nail to make his way to the top of the food chain among those around him, much to the disdain of his parents. Considered 'too hostile of a problem child, when he came of age he was given the suggestion of getting his own place to stay and, realizing he'd caused them too much grief up until then, elected to move on and spare them anymore trouble. As a last gift, they helped him move into his own residence, thanking them for putting up with him all that time. Now, he would be on his own, with his first thought being to look for a job... However, for someone like him, they didn't come easily. After a few days of failed attempts, he decided to fall into street fighting for some quick and easy cash doing what he did best: Flooring the competition. Though things went well for a short time, it became clear to him that the stakes continued to rise higher and higher, and ultimately they would be expecting him to kill to win, or die trying... But with no other way out and not intending to lose at the only thing he was good at, he sought to push ahead.

However, someone else had given him a reason to not have to resort to such means for a living. A club owner spectating at some of his fights offered the man a job that would not only pay better, but probably would not land him in prison or a bodybag. Though suspicious at first, being told he would become a Bouncer for his club wound up becoming one of the higher points of Aster's life, finally able to leave a scene of danger and make a more legitimate living. To Aster, it was simple: Standing at doors to ID patrons, wandering the Clubs and Bars to supervise and make sure no one was causing a ruckus, and help ensure the safety of their workers. When someone got belligerent, he'd simply have to escort them out... Resist, and they were thrown out without question. There was no need for him to ball up a fist to send it into the face of another... For the first time, Aster felt like he could do more than knock heads with others to make a living.

During his work, he drew the eye of one of the club's entertainers, a lovely thing by the name of Ramona, who Aster took to purchasing her company whenever he had time off. Though it started as simple business and later curiosity, the two started to get serious after a time, surprising even Aster with the feeling of having found what he felt was 'the one' for him. Though she got ready to leave the business, Aster would continue to work as a Bouncer to help support them, looking forward to the day they would marry... Alas, it would not be meant to be. A month later, an attack was suffered from one of the indigenous beasts that roamed the surrounding lands, making its way into civilization to wreak havoc before it would be put down by the esteemed Monster Slayers. However, while Aster escaped with only moderate injury in the form of a broken arm and several lacerations, his wife-to-be had lost her life in the attack. Concerned for his mental health, his boss had elected to give Aster time off to sort out his mind and his priorities, and thanked him for everything he did and would have continued to do. He spent the next couple of weeks in pain and grief, trying to get over the loss, and eventually turned to more amoral means of moving on, between alcohol and women. He returned to being a menace for a time, a lech with no aim or direction in his life, until his boss knocked some sense into him and told him if he wanted to do something serious with his life, then instead of throwing it away he should take his carcass to the Monster Slayers and put his skills to use for them. Like a drunken epiphany, the realization that if he joined them he would get to fight and destroy the very same creatures that had essentially denied him happiness in life began to dawn on him. Thanking his boss, both for flooring him and setting him straight, he spent time sobering up and getting himself back in shape before he waited for the next recruitment drive to join.

As expected, the process was complete hell. Many others were vying to join, for reasons ranging from selfish to righteous. Compared to all of them, he felt maybe he fell into the selfish column, wanting to fight for revenge. But at one point it occured to him that it wasn't just about him anymore; If he did manage to join the Monster Slayers, he wasn't just fighting for himself. He was fighting for everyone watching them, fighting to make sure no one wound up like Ramona again. With this conviction, he applied himself to tests both mentally and physically demanding. Even with the discovery of what would happen should he pass, he swore no price would be too high to pay in order to fight. At one point worried about whether he would pass or fail and already mentally preparing himself to have to wait for another time to join, he was told he passed and would be allowed to join. With a final check of making sure he knew what he was getting himself into, Aster was ready to be inducted into the Slayers, for his sake, for Ramona's sake, and for everyone's sake.

Extra: I had to resist using this as armor for him:

Noisekick

Well you don't really need armor given the bodily modifications for the members of the Monster Slaying Unit, however everything else sounds fine.

Gardsorm

I figured, but it was more for imposing factor than anything. =p

Still, glad to hear!

FarFetched

I'm interested in this. Couple questions, if you don't mind. What's the technology level for this world? (IE: medieval fantasy, modern fantasy, steampunk, mythpunk, etc.) Second, when does a Slayer undergo body modifications? Upon acceptance to the academy?

I had an idea in mind for a trapmaker/sniper. Someone who focuses on supporting allies from afar and outfitting them with non-standard equipment relevant to missions.

FarFetched

Name: Jane Winchester
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Appearance:
Jane is a well sized woman with an uncomfortable height to her, standing in at 6 feet even. Though quite well endowed, she finds her breasts to be more of a back pain than anything.Needless to say, she doesn't go out of her way to show them off. True to the winchester lineage, she sports crimson-red hair and porcelain skin paler than the moon.

With slightly... less clothes.(NSFW)

Clothing/Outfit:
Jane prefers simple, white and grey clothing- anything capable of keeping her skin out of the desert heat will do. Her favorites are long sleeve shirts and hardy pants. She detests clothing that are showy or might restrict movement. Heels? Get the hell out.

Around her neck she wears a necklace imbued with frost magic, to keep cool out in the desert and protect her skin from sizzling. It tends to mark her as a woman of means, but sometimes it's just too hot out for her to care; the weather in sunny Durandville is no place to dance around protection from heat.

Previous occupation: Apprentice Weaponsmith
Weapon of choice: Bolt Action Rifle and a wide array of traps.
Likes: Gadgets, Stealth, Reading, Well laid plans, Pragmatism, Guns
Dislikes: Surprises, Risks, Flamboyance, Idiots
Personality:
Jane is a reserved woman who rarely speaks of herself. She approaches monster hunting as a soldier would (and, to her, like any monster hunter should). She prefers to focus on training and the task at hand and usually avoids small talk. While it will always be an uphill battle, mentions of gadgets, monsters, and practice tend to draw her out of her shell. Other intellectual discussions, while on a lower shelf, are likewise welcome around her.

Jane's maintainence on her weapons borders on an obsession. Before a mission, after a mission, every morning, every evening. She cleans and cares for her weapon like a priestess would a temple. In battle, Jane uses this rifle to full effect and shows great prowess in long range combat.

Modification wise, Jane is still mostly human, having only taken the bare minimum enhancements required to enter the academy. It has, quite rightfully, earned her the moniker "Plain Jane" amongst her peers. Unfortunately, she doesn't have much choice in the matter. Unlike most students attending the academy, Jane isn't blessed with a large natural mana-pool. Artificial mana reserves have been able to make up the difference, but there is only so much technology can do. Such is for the better, actually, because Jane is quite uneasy about modifying her body. Moral quandries aside, she worries that the "enhancements" might disrupt her ability to aim across the extreme distances she prefers.

Modest though her mana may be, Jane is able to make up for this shortcoming with raw intelligence. In no uncertain terms, Jane is a natural-born genius. She's a savant when it comes to conserving mana tactically and it shows when on the hunt. She can suss out the nature of most magical spells and even devise gadgets to replicate those spells in a worryingly short amount of time.

With her high intelligence, it is often suggested to Jane that she would be better off in a different occupation. Much to the chagrin of her half-addled mother, Jane is quite stubborn about killing monsters.

Though private and from a well-off family, Jane isn't all that aloof. She usually avoids showing off her talents and is perfectly fine allowing others to take credit for her accomplishments. At least, if it suits her. Likewise, during arguments, Jane is quick to passive-aggressively agree right off the bat to avoid headaches. Being noticed is often the last thing on her mind.

She tends to wear a small, polite smile on her lips. It's fine and nice in poilite company, but can become a bit disconcerting when disembowling a monster from 300 meters away.

Sexuality:
Jane is not a very romantic person but she does have needs. She does not take lovers per se; anyone in a relationship with her is treated more like an underling than anything. Jane is attracted to women more than men and prefers the well-read and the submissive sorts. Due to the fear of abandonment brought on by the death of her father, Jane is very possessive of those she is in a relationship with. This has led her to acquire rather... exotic tastes in bed.

Background:
Jane doesn't often speak of herself, even when hard pressed. However, anyone with the time to review her files would find that she is the only child of a prominent weaponsmith; Charles Winchester. Though quite influential, he is, unfortunately, a very late weaponsmith. His life was taken by a monster, during a test run of a new weapon. Jane was forced to watch. To this day, though Jane has sworn to kill the creature, she doesn't know much of it. All she could see of the beast was a long, gaunt claw and a cloak of shadowy mist.

Relikai

Name: Kuroishi Sou
Age: 24
Gender: Female
Appearance: Stands at 165cm, weighs 52kg. Sporting an incredible hourglass figure, one can see her curves perfectly in her outfit, which conforms to her skin, hiding only those parts not suitable for the young to witness.
Clothing/Outfit: Dark Purple Skintight Bodysuit made of synthetic silk for maximum agility, material is strengthened from her own mana reserves.
Previous occupation: Weaponsmith Intern
Weapon of choice: Lances, often carries and wields two of them.
Likes: Mature People, Tea, Wine, Steak, Exercising, Sleeping, Sex, Comforting allies.
Dislikes: Losing, Strong alcohol, Spicy Food, Procrastinating, Monsters.

Personality:
Cold, calculated and extremely efficient in the field of battle, Kuroishi shows little emotion when swinging her two lances. Kuroishi seeks the quickest and most useful way to end the lives of monsters, and often sticks to a varied style limited only by the lance. She tends to attack from the flanks, choosing to use the agility granted by her outfit to perform acrobatic moves, striking at places where the enemy could not defend.

Out of the field, she's a caring woman, although a little quiet after choosing to remain single for life since her modifications. Still, she always looks out for her teammates and the innocent, always trusting in her own ability to dive into danger and escape with an innocent without sustaining too much damage.

Being someone who was healthy and extremely flexible but not naturally tough, Kuroishi's modifications include the strengthening of her bone structure, and slight adjustments to her mana pool so it could sustain her battle suit without running out of mana too quickly.

Sexuality: Heterosexual
Background:

Born into a family of herbalists, Kuroishi was granted many boons of her parents who often improved their health with the many herbs they dealt with. Herself being treated with a growth formula since young, she has grown into a well-endowed woman, with long purple hair and good natural dexterity. Her eyes were red from the aftereffects of many herbs, although it was seen as a cosmetic boon rather than being one of a monster.

When the first monsters attacked, Kuroishi was collecting herbs as they broke through the bushes. Thankfully, a Slayer saved her, his lance striking true and clearing the field of enemies before they could get her. He would eventually become her first lover, Kuroishi often preparing meals and herbs to pass on to him for meals. However, he was severely wounded one day, and unfortunately, the Slayer passed on before help could arrive.

When the next call for recruits came, Kuroishi decided to sign up with the Monster Slayers, both as a sign of conviction and as an act to honor her past love. Taking up his weapons as her favored tools of the trade, she sought out the Monsters, a personal vendetta against those who took most from her.

Gardsorm

Yay, more profiles~ One I can already see Aster annoying easily and one that looks like she'll have to mediate for everyone. :3 Our Slayers're gonna be odd, for sure.

I think I'm finally done fussing around with Jane. I decided to make her a bit bigger than Aster to play up the akwardness of Aster having to deal with Jane judging him silently.

Noisekick

Tech: Well tech in this world is not based on electricity or fossile fuels but on mana/magical essence/aetheric essence. People who are magically stunted or who can only use mana in a limited manner use mana crystals to power their appliances. Most tech is 1930s or 1940s style with exception of "cybernetics", telecommunication and computing which are more advanced than our current technology. Imagine it is like dieselpunk but with magic instead of diesel. Weapons wise guns use mana and are often single shot or semi-automatic, yet melee weapons such as swords still exist and are used for close combat. In regards to telecommunication, wireless methods are available and can be as small as ear pieces or can be even implanted. Computing plays more of a role as an utility such as processing for automation.

Any more questions?

Sounds good! I wanted to be careful with what Jane dreams up, uses, etc.

Hehe, are mages like fuel pumps in this world? That's pretty funny XD

I'm half tempted to give Jane a pet slime now, but I should totally do this ingame sometime! *u*

Edit: happened upon some choice pictures that I felt fit her character a bit better; ended up changing her hair color.

Kokaine

Name: Fox Bishop aka Blue
Age: 26
Gender: Female

Appearance: Blue is a mixed woman of Native American and Caucasian descent. As such her complexion is darker, her skin deeply tanned and her hair a black so dark it appears to have blue highlights. Her eyes were once a brown so dark they seemed black but after the accident that left her with only one eye and wicked looking scar on right side of her face that slices through her right eyebrow and eye and curves down over the top of her cheek bone before ending, her eyes are now a blue so pale they are nearly white--though the left is usually covered by an eye patch as it has a tendency to change colors. Blue stands 5'9" tall and despite possessing rather generous cleavage and an enviable rear end, she gives the appearance of being more tough than soft. She has an athletic build with hard packed muscle earned during her years as a bounty hunter and sports quite the collection of scars and tattoos--thankfully the tattoos are more eye catching than most of the scars, though not all.

Due to an accident prior to becoming a slayer, Blue has received a few upgrades along with the standard enhancements given. Her missing eye (right) was replaced with a cybernetic eye that allows her to communicate with the sword she carries and issue her commands, along with several modes to boost her vision in specific ways. She also received enhanced prosthetics to replace her right arm from the forearm down and her right leg from the knee down. They do not blend and are very clearly cybernetic add-ons with adamantium frames that can be powered by her own mana for increased speed and precision.

Note - Blue is naturally left handed but learned to be ambidextrous in some things, particularly the wielding of her sword.

Clothing/Outfit: Blue's clothing choice seem to be fairly innocuous and pretty standard regardless of what's going on. Tight denim or cargo pants, a tee, and leather jacket and boots. She makes small adjustments for weather and terrain but considering how she feels about her own scars, she generally keeps her arms and legs covered, though her shirts tend to be on the tight side and may not quite cover every bit of flesh.

Notable items always present include -- a fox totem worn on a leather thong around her neck, leather gloves, earrings, lip ring, eyebrow ring, and worn combat boots. Also always has a tattered black bandana she wears or tucks into her pocket, it was her fathers.

Examples

Previous occupation: Bounty Hunter

Weapon of choice: Enhanced Buster Sword she calls her Cutlass -- changes shape and size and can absorb or reflect magical attacks based upon her own mana expenditure. Is controlled by her via her right eye.

Likes: Danger. Risk. Roller skates. Oldies. Lollipops. Motorcycles. Doing what she feels like doing. Sex. Cuddling. Kittens. Monkeys. Pirates. Blades. Gymnastics. Doodling on other people ("temporary tattoos" which are actually pretty good).
Dislikes: Over planning. Being restricted or restrained (unless we're talking fun with cuffs). Boredom. Talking about her past. Vegetables. Dogs. People touching her things (or her) without permission. Sleeping. Having her scars stared at.

Personality: Blue's mind is organized chaos that usually makes little sense to anyone but her. Maybe that's part of the reason why she seems to attract trouble like a magnet. She's mouthy, messy, colorful, and given to impulsive decisions that have as much chance of backfiring as they do succeeding. Fearless and intense to the point of seeming a little crazy, she enjoys the rush of adrenaline and is most adept when thinking on the fly. In fact, she's not dumb by any means, though her particular brand of smarts can sometimes cause her to make even more of a mess in pursuit of a goal. Thankfully she's doggedly persistent in achieving her aims even if her commentary can come off somewhat flippant, and she is the sort who will take responsibility for her screw ups--in fact, while she has no issue with endangering herself, she does genuinely try to avoid endangering others and will never simply walk away from someone in need. Even if she wasn't the one to cause the issue in the first place. It also helps that she hates the monsters with a passion bordering on fanaticism--though, with the enhancements she's gone through part of her wonders if she hasn't started down the slippery slope to becoming one of them.

Sexuality: Opportunistic (pansexual)

Background: Blue was born a hunter. Even if she couldn't officially join her older brother (15 years older) and pops until she 14, the hunt was always in her blood. People, animals, trouble... it didn't matter. Once she caught a scent she was on it. Her pops tried to keep her out of it and let her grow up like a normal girl but she was persistent enough that eventually even he--a stubborn old man set in his way--eventually gave up. Blue remembers plenty of jobs back in the early days watching her pops and brother make plans only to have her muck it up with her ...erm... enthusiasm.

But she learned. Adapted. And at age 14 she began being included in planning and learning when to have patience--probably the one skill she never quite got down. Still, there was more than one occasion when her particular brand of diligence saved the day. Unfortunately, however, it didn't save the day when it was most needed.

That last hunt. Something had been wrong and she'd smelled it right away. However, with nothing more concrete than her instincts there was nothing to pull her father and brother back from that last job. They told her not to worry. Even said she could sit out if she wanted to. (The answer to which was a very colorful bunch of words which essentially amounted to F you.) So they went. They followed, tracked, unraveled the trail... only to run into a monster just outside Durandville.

Blue doesn't recall most of the fight. She dreams of it, the horrific nightmares that chase her from sleep, but she cannot actively remember more than flashes and impressions. She knows she grabbed onto her brother, after their father had already been crushed repeatedly into the ground, she'd vowed not to lose him too but she did. At some point she lost part of her arm and leg and even suffered a blow that lost her eye but she held on long enough for the slayers to arrive. Held on long enough to injure the damned beast and make their job easier. She didn't pass out until after it was dead.

In the aftermath Blue was patched up and given sup par prosthetics to supplement what she lost but her desire to live was fading. Everyone who encountered her figured she had a death wish. They way she kept looking for the monsters and refusing to sleep or stop until death put her down for good. It was the old man, the tinkerer with the dusty old shop, who'd managed some upgrades to her arm and leg from scrap after the few times she'd gotten herself banged up, that pushed her to sign up when the slayers started recruiting. Blue wasn't looking to join up with anyone really but they had the tools she needed. And maybe some part of her wasn't quite ready to die anyway.

I like her new picture! And somehow I'm laughing at the thought this serious and straight-laced woman has a cute little slime as a pet. XD

Also, wow, the other three slayers so far are ladies... Aster isn't complaining for sure but he's starting to wonder how awkward it's going to be in this unit for him now. xP

TotesRider

Kinda deciding between two characters.

A ninja like fighter who wields chains and has a poison touch

or

A fallen boxer using the Slayers as a way of redemption

or

A VERY charismatic Pro-Wrestler. Because who wouldn't wanna Suplex a big Beastie?
