Recently, I bought an e-book reader. I've long been resisted investing into that kind of gadget, but not too long ago I had opportunity to try it out and I, surprisingly, I found myself liking it. So, I bought one.

The question: what are the best sites to look for English-language e-books (legal ones, of course)? I know that Amazon sells a lot of e-books, but there's some weird DRM thing going on with them. Are there any other large e-book stores at all?

Also, I decided that I'd like to try watching movies by VOD, as hunting down DVDs can be costly. Again, are there any big VOD sites you'd recommend?

If you enjoy Science Fiction, give Baen Books a look. They have an extensive free library. Also check Amazon, as they frequently have books for free, (mostly from new authors trying to attract readers).

These are smaller, less well known authors, and I imagine a lot of self published ones. I came across them via a facebook ad for an urban fantasy series, signed up, and you get onto the mailing lists for different authors and genres. Quality is going to be variable, but I've enjoyed some of the ones I've tried.

Not all e-books on Amazon use DRM. Only some do. If you search by category, there's a free tab in each major section that lists the top free e-books.

There's a thread over in the Literary Discussion forum about finding free e-books:

It has a lot of information. I (and others) have posted freebies at times there too.

You can also search free books on Smashwords and there are groups on Facebook dedicated entirely to free e-books.

Project Gutenberg has a lot of books available that can be downloaded for free to e-readers.  Tor also has a freebie-of-the-month thing (sign up for email list, get free books)

Thanks! That will be useful :)

How about non-free e-books? I am willing to pay for them, but I don't know where's the best place to look?

Amazon is probably a good place to start.
