OOC/Discussion Thread.

Hi, here is something you might not know about me. I absolutely love Heavy Metal music. I play it, I have a useless almost encyclopedic knowledge about the history and evolution of the genre, and I go to a poop ton of shows. I am interested in doing a metal-centric game, illustrating the formation of and gradual success of a band. One of the aspects I find most interesting about a lot of my favorite bands are the juxtapositions between their highs and their lows. Drug addiction, and alcoholism aren't remotely good things, but they make for an interesting bit of drama along with personality and artistic conflicts that arise with these groups. A band becomes closer than family in some ways, just because you are constantly on tour with these people, and you're creating something with them, but a lot of bands break up for various reasons. I want to see what comes out of this experiment, and would ideally like to hit all the cliches. The excess, the member fall outs, potentially even line up changes and the like. Join me on this adventure.

As far as the number of members in the band? We can go a few routes, depending on how many people want to play, and how many would actually want to be in the band. This would also determine what sort of subgenre(s) the group would fall into. People that might be interested, but who might not want to be in the band could also play as significant others, the band's producer, a manager, a tech, roadies, fans, groupies, fellow musicians and other nifty roles. I am genuinely curious to see what people's thoughts are, and what they'd like to do. That is why as far as a specific metal genre? I don't have one tagged down yet, other than saying that I would like for the band to be a firmly modern post 2000's style band that is on the heavier side. Whether or not that delves into the extreme genres like death, black, doom or speed metal that can be discussed. I honestly think a band like Slipknot is a good reference point because their music is heavy, but it has also gotten them MTV play and they headline major arenas and festivals. They are not as extreme as your Whitechapels, or your Black Dahlia Murders and your Pig Destroyers but they are heavier than a lot of other mainstream acts. Also Iowa was life in middle school.

Musicians can be absolutely fucked up people, so as far as limits? I will let everyone decide theirs, but I have seen and read some pretty gnarly things as far as what rockers get up to. I just ask that we respect the forum's rules and each other's offs/ons. And if people want to have characters with preexisting ties to one another? That is awesome too. I am all for people's input and thoughts also. Who do you like to listen to? What would you like to see? Perhaps you've thought up some things that I have not?

Band Members: Again, depends on how many people are interested. I would love to hear input. This could be a 4 person group, or a 7-9 person group. If we get this going, I will be playing the lead vocalist. That being said, I am open to, and this is depending on the group that forms, harmonies and/or a second vocalist. Lacuna Coil, Mastodon, and Mushroomhead are all examples.

I vote for keeping the band small, four or five musicians (we don't have keyboards, for example), and maybe some characters with different tasks: a manager, a roadie, a sound tech or something else. Or maybe band members Significant Others? But if other players prefer a larger team (Slipknot or Korpiklaani, for example), I'll do my best anyways!

Pretty much. As far as genre? What I am thinking is elements of Industrial, Thrash, and Progressive. But I would like to know what everyone else thinks, and if they'd have some element of theatricality or some sort of hook. Sorta like Powerman 5000 had their B-movie Sci Fi thing, Mastodon with their concept albums, or White/Rob Zombie with old horror movies or Fear Factory with their whole dystopia thing.

So I am thinking some of the band mates have preexisting ties. Whether it is interpersonal relationships, or they have played together in bands in the past.
