Anyway, since the rules and general starting situation have been settled on, perhaps now would be a good time for people to start discussing character concepts?

I generally turn to the Scum for myself usually (they do body modification and sculpting well by reputation), though an Out'ster could be fun for the simulspace programming side.

Maybe a technician that can hack fabbers... Though I also wouldn't mind playing a scion of some Hyperelite family turned to that lifestyle. Lives as a street rat as he's grown to oppose the life he was raised in. I kinda want a hand in genehacking or psychosurgery though.

I want to see where we are going with characters as I am up in the air when it comes to character concept at the moment.

I am looking at an async ego hunter using a sylph morph.  Best for location and tracking Virus tainted egos and morphs.

Wow, I'd love a EP game, its probably one of the best ive ever played, and so much potential for lewd funs too.

Also, the Junta isn't REALLY idiots. They're basically just expecting the BSG miniseries to happen any day now.
That said, while they are not idiots, they are assholes. Their plan for when the TITANs come back basically amounts to 'fuck the rest of the human race and destroy any chance they have of organizing a united defense in the hopes that the TITANs will consider the Jovians too hardened a target and pass us over in favour of taking out the softer inner and outer system polities'

While I agree that the Jovian Junta is not the most well-liked faction in the game, I will say that their strategy isn't "ignore transhumanity." Their actions against the other factions when they are able are driven by the belief that these other factions are driving transhumanity toward a second Fall. And... to be fair, it isn't entirely unjustified from their point of view. They look out to the rest of the system and they see people actively meddling with the Pandora gates, where some hypothesis the TITANs went, instead of just destroying them. They see a resurgence of new AGI and don't buy that they won't be the type that go crazy again. They see various factions literally picking up TITAN technology and attempting to use it for their own.

Now, it is clearly a reactionary, super-conservative reaction... but it isn't because they're idiots OR assholes. Their actions are driven by the idea that the TITANs aren't gone for good, they are coming back, and everybody just seems to be actively trying to make it worse when they do.

Hmm.  Since we're using the Fate rules I kind of feel like I want to try that async AGI character I brought up before.  Maybe have something like 'Async AGI Super-Hacker' as my high concept and 'A Mercurial AGI On Mars' as my trouble.  Then I could take another aspect relating to the character's ties to the criminal underworld, since I imagine that she would have picked up her Watts-Macleod infection while helping smugglers move some items from the quarantine zone past customs, and then maybe my last aspect could be something like 'Former Sexbot AI', since this is supposed to be a rather smutty game. (Or maybe that would work better as my Trouble aspect, instead?)

And then for the morph aspect, the initial character concept involved the character being sleeved into a Pleasure Pod morph.  The morph list doesn't have Pleasure Pods on it, but I think it would be pretty easy to create.  Just take the standard Worker Pod stats, add on the Social (Sex Switch) trait, and give it the Attraction stunt and that should be all it needs.

And then in terms of overall skills, I'm definitely thinking of using the list for the Criminal Hacker archetype as a starting point.  Maybe give myself a secondary social focus, since that's what all the async stunts seem to focus on.  Though, I'd also like to take Medicine and do a little psychosurgery, too, get myself as adept at cracking minds as I am at cracking computer systems...

I am going with more traditional pi/social stuff with async targeting sensing exigent virus and finding people so that may work well with your async. If that infringes too much on your character I can rethink.

No, it definitely sounds like we've got different areas of focus, so we shouldn't have to worry about having too much overlap. ^^ The psi stunts I was looking at were Cloud Memory, Subliminal and Thought Browse, mostly used for social engineering and a quick and easy way to steal people's mesh passwords without them realizing it, so it definitely looks like we're going in different directions on what cool brain-powers we'll have.

Okay.  I may look at a gun bunny too though.  I haven't played one of those in a while.  Fury Morph and all.

I am kind of liking the Gun Bunny idea.  I think I will go with that.  Straight up combat.

Actually, their plan in case of the TITANs actually returning is to activate truely massive multisprectrum jammers and turn jupiter into a massive signalling blackhole cutting off the majority of communications between the Inner and Outer systems, while also deploying their military assets to destroy *anything* that attempts to slingshot around jupiter, effectively blocking off the fastest transit corridor between the inner and outer systems. They will actively and intently destroy any attempt for humanity to unite against the threat in anything like a quick and orderly fashion, fleets will have to take longer and slower routes to reach the other half of the system, and communications will be spotty at best.

So yes, they plan to fuck everyone else in the hopes of saving their skins. This plan is a big part of why there are jovian Firewall agents, people working in the various jovian intelligence and policing agencies (who despite being dedicated to the ideals of the Jovian Junta in general) are so disgusted with this plan that they are willing to turn traitor to join firewall and help avert jove's idiotic attempt to sabotage human resistance in the name of trying to cover their own asses.

Honestly, i know theres alot of Jove hate in the fandom, i never minded them personally, i thought they were kinda funny. In a derpy hillbilly with guns kinda way. This is what made me hate them:

Quote
It wasn’t the stance of JSF Intelligence on Firewall, though, that lead me to treason. It was their stanceon other polities—one of aggression thinly veiled in détente. Closely linked to this is their strategy in case of another TITAN attack.

The Jovian Republic, you see, is a massive x-risk for the rest of transhumanity. You will find Jovian Firewall agents a strange breed, with complex motives. But on this, most of us agree.

The Security Council’s operational plan for resumed hostilities with the TITANs treats all other transhuman habitats, EM-spectrum transmissions, and space traffic as potential infection vectors. Neighboring habs are to be seized or destroyed. Planetary system-scale EM jamming would be set up to cook incoming transmissions—incidentally creating a comm hole through a swath of transhuman space. And any incoming ship traffic from other polities would be destroyed without warning.

It’s a sensible policy.

It’s also insane.

Jupiter is the middle solar system’s trebuchet. A high percentage of traffic between inner and outer systems uses its mass for a gravity assist. The Republic’s scorched space contingency plans would isolate inner and outer systems from any hope of coordinating a unified defense.

For this and other reasons, we Jovian proxies and sentinels find common cause with Firewall. May history bear out our choice.

However justified their general paranoia may be, that is unacceptable, it makes them objectively worse than any other transhuman faction. The Ultimates (for example) get alot of flack, but atleased they just want to leave us to our doom.

Haven't thought on a Morph or Aspects yet, best get to doing that. ^^

I'm thinking 'Prodigal Son turned Scum Hacker' as my character, though not sure if that's a bit of a mouthful for a High Concept. That's basically who he'd be though, unless I make him an Out'ster instead, depending on if anyone wants to specialise in body sculpt (mainly a Scum thing) or simulspace construction (an Out'ster thing). I don't want to tread too much on anyone else's schtick past the general modification/hacky things I mentioned in my last post.

Based on your overall description of your character concept in a previous post, I think you could probably have your high concept be something like 'Scum Genehacker' (or maybe something a little more descriptive), and then some other aspect of yours (possibly even your trouble?) could be something like 'Prodigal Son of a Hyperelite Dynasty'.

Yeah, I think that suits the Trouble well, actually. ^^

My general High Concept may shift due to what skills I give him and how they rate, though I've already decided how I'd do my pyramid, which I'll plop below;

One Lv.4
Three Lv.3s
Four Lv.2s
Four Lv.1s

That'd be the 25 skill points distributed for my character, though what they'll be I'll sort out when we get to that point, outside of what we mentioned already.

Interesting ideas floating around! I won't comment on them - but I would say let me make the inevitable prompt on an actual write-up before going TOO crazy. I probably will get that done early next week.

As for the argument against the Jovians, everything you listed is true. And falls in line exactly with what I said. They don't see the other transhuman factions as something they can cooperate with. They see the other transhuman factions as vulnerabilities and possible infection vectors because they are falling back on exactly what caused the Fall. Now, as for why they're willing to let the rest of the solar system burn if it keeps their faction safe? It is definitely something that would make more worldly people think twice, even in Eclipse Phase.

That being said, remember the bioconservative philosophy is that when you've switched bodies even once, you've lost your soul. So in the eyes of a fervent Jovian citizen, they would see that strategy as basically sacrificing people who are already dead in favor of the living. Easy choice for them!

Definitely not painted to be likable as a whole though. Which isn't shocking considering they aren't transhumanists in a transhumanist setting.

Honestly considering bot jammer with a touch of melee combat myself. Guess I'll have to get further into the book and see how it all works. :D

That said, while the prompt's not ready we are not starting as firewall agents right?

Either way I think it'd be simple enough when it comes to it to do a similar Aspect generating thing with the Crossing Paths and all. Tbh, one thing I really do love about FATE is making Aspects based on links to the other characters.

Not going to lie, I was rather glad when I saw that the aspects didn't have to be tied to the crossing paths thing, myself.  I haven't had any experience actually playing Fate-based games, but I did try to get into a Dresden Files game on E once that pretty much died in character creation when one of the players took months to finish up his character. ^^;

Given the potential number of players and my personal distaste for feeling everything has to be tied at the hip, I won't do Crossing Paths.

This is not SUPER relevant since the phases are detached from the Aspects in EP Fate.

Oh - I missed answering something earlier.

I haven't quite decided if players will start as Firewall agents or not. If they do, they will be essentially newly enlisted Sentinels. You would have skills they would find useful, they can get a degree of loyalty by getting you out of the hands of a criminal group enslaving your collective egos to a degree, and essentially use you to investigate various leads in a seedy underworld.

While this isn't 100% certainly going to be what it ends up being, I'm leaning toward using Firewall simply because they are my darling shadowy conspiracy and it makes it nice and easy to give the entire group something to work for rather than being more open-sandbox and hoping the party is going to stick together.

One potentially fun option could be to start us out on the interview process that gets us recruited into Firewall.  It might not work out as well as I'm thinking it might over play by post, but having our intro involve how we react to the employment offer and then having us all meet up at the same body bank when we resleeve could be an interesting way to start things off.

From what I've read about Firewall, it's a common practice in a lot of Servers to have the Sentinels all working at the same sort of cover job to make it more plausible when all of them have to up and leave at once when sent out on a mission.  Considering the nature of this particular game, I'm almost tempted to suggest that we could all be part of the same adult XP production outfit and have day jobs as porn stars, cameramen, editors and the like. :P That might be a bit too on the nose for this game, though.

Edit: By the way, looking over character creation a bit more for the Fate rules, I note that the section on stunts states that we get to select 3 to 5 stunts for our character, and then the section on Refresh below that says we get 6 Refresh to spend on our characters (and are expected to spend at least 2).  I suppose another thing we'll need to know when it comes to character creation is how many free stunts we get before it's time to start spending Refresh...

You start out with 3 Stunts for free, as stated in FATE Core. Then you can spend Refresh to buy more.

That's how it works in Fate Core, but in Fate Core you only get 3 Refresh, and character generation in Eclipse Phase Fate differs from Fate Core in a few other ways already.  That said, I definitely can see the '3-5 stunts' line being some accidental copy/paste thing imported over from the Fate Core rules, so I won't have any complaints if it's only 3 stunts.  With 6 Refresh, we should all have more than enough points to spend to fully-realize our characters. ^^

Edit: Oh, wait, it's 3-5 Stunts because you start out with 3 free Stunts and then are required to spend at least 2 Refresh out of your starting 6, but won't necessarily be spending said Refresh on Stunts.  My bad, though that's definitely something to provide feedback on since the wording was a bit unclear.

Yep, your edit is correct. :)

I'm still deciding what to spend Refresh on and what Stunts I'm going to pick up. I kind of wish down the road the other Morphs from the Morph Recognition Guide get statted out. There's a fair choice in the FATE document, but it's still a lil basic. But then I guess you can pick up augments to represent your Morph being something else from the canon list of those available in EP.
