iphone and computer disconnect

My iphone has a cord to connect to the computer.  I used to be able to get pictures off it by opening the files.  Now when I connect there are no files there!  It says internal storage drive, so many gigs free and what not.  I click on it and there is nothing there anymore.  I've tried importing too, but it says no pictures found.  WTH?
