what types of characters do you play?
« on: January 21, 2013, 01:22:35 AM »
Not sure where to put this

Sparked by an odd conversation with someone on why we play what we do. She has the theory that maybe a lot of players play only human or humanoid characters or largely play human or humanoid characters because itís easier to relate to the character. It got me curious, so what do you play and why?

Me personally, I play almost nothing but cyborgs or Transformers. Partly because I'm a robophile and partly because I've always loved Transformers. That and I've been playing for about 7+ years now and over the years became bored of playing just human characters and wanted something that would be more of a challenge and decided to fall back on my old love of Transformers even though it meant having a harder time finding RPers

I've turned them human before even though they really were not human.

I also play anthros though not as often and on occasion when I feel like it, sapient mythical creatures like dragons or a nightmare.

In my case your friend is right. I'm only familiar with being a human male, so I play human or humanoid (demon, vampire, etc). I'd be open to playing as something else, but would likely require a little coaching that a lot of RP partners aren't interested in.

There are a lot of people on here that probably would not mind giving you a little coaching and help on that subject

I prefer human or humanoid because my idea of sex appeal stems from my own being. I wouldn't feel sexy if I was playing the role of an inhuman robot or an inhuman anything. That being said, I have no problem playing a multitude of variances which include human like cyborgs or (currently) a hologram.

In adventure scenarios I enjoy pitting my human-like characters against unimaginably overwhelming and often inhuman forces.

Also, I like human frailties and weaknesses. Exploring the human nature is my primary source of writing inspiration.

Yeah, I usually play humanoids as well, but I manage a decent range within that. Male, female, other, and all sorts of variations on species (human, demon, anthro, various mixed-blood types). I think the most consistent thing is that I almost always end up playing a character thats a caster/healer type, usually bookish or shy.

There's always a spark of myself in my characters - but I like to think I can take something I feel, a central drive of mine and apply it across lots of lines of race and color and creed and upbringing, and I've never had much trouble playing non-humans.  I've noticed for my characters I do need some driving that about them that makes me able to feel they're 'good' in their own mind, even if the whole world would judge them differently.

"But guys, the world will be such a better place when I'm ruling it - I'm doing this for you!"

I have no ability to play a character that is just wicked for wicked's sake.  Sinful, hedonistic, selfish, greedy - sure.  But my mind balks at being able to conceive of why someone would think killing is 'fun,' and so I've never been able to pull off a character that I think is a genuine psychotic.  Even the ones who do unspeakable things have to view those unspeakable things as a necessary evil for a greater good - even if that greater good is completely implausible.

I'm happiest as a GM, playing at least a few different characters, both pro and antagonist.

Speaking as an evil GM, I'm with Ciosa. Evil for the sake of Evil, cruelty because 'I'm evil, that's why!' is just bad writing, bioware. As for the characters themselves, I'll play just about anything, human, non, alien, supernatural, whatever the story calls for at the time. It helps that must of my games are fantasy or sci fi things with smut in them rather than pure porn.

Really, the only thing I don't like to play are full on 'furry' characters. A fantasy or alien race with a few animalstic features is just fine, but anything that could be classified as 'furry fandom' isn't really my cup of tea.

All of my characters are originally created. one in particular is a Demi God. This character stayed with me, and I have use him in adventurous role play, Fighting role play, and erotica. I created a forum group long ago, but the site shutted down, and I lost everything.

I've played a wide range of characters, mostly human or humanoid. I have played robotic characters in the past.  Mostly I play humans, Elves, Vamps, werewolves, etc. I try to create various characters each with their own personalities,  flaws and quirks. I've got stacks of character bios lol I hope to potentially revisit.

I usually play humans or humanoid (although I don't really draw much of a line here between organic-familiar humans and cyborg or more fantastic anthropomorphic species as you'd commonly find in say, AD&D).  I play female, male and occasionally some other sexes.  Lately, I'm leaning rather more ofte toward female or feminine/transformed male, and kind of sparring with myself about what kinds of stories I might really like to put more trans or cd sorts into.  Don't really have a great deal of experience with the latter, but I am fairly interested.

I'm particularly partial to running Asian female figures and also I often enjoy playing young tourists, interns, somehow partly artsy types, and quieter but calm people (people rather like me in a way, but rather more efficient about using those attributes to deal with people?  laughs).  As main PC's, many of these get into peril situations of a soft or moderately harder sort.  A few are rather more secure or once in a while, outright controlling in their situations.

In cooperation with someone who likes to share NPC's or as a GM, I can run a somewhat wider range of characters of both sexes...  But I haven't GM'ed for ages in a "group" sense -- here meaning, larger than 2 people.  (I do have one idea for that in the works.)  I have done more 1-1 chats where either myself or both players have both a main PC, and control of various less developed NPC's (particularly antagonists).

I don't know if I can answer this. I was going to say humans, but then I thought of many that weren't. I was going to say "alive" but then I realized I have played deities, robots and undead. I was going to say "humanoid" but then I remembered playing spirits (no physical body or manifestation thereof), and even proposed running an RP based on the movie Demon Seed. So, in the end, the only thing I hope that I can say is that the characters I play are "interesting..." but that's really up to me RP partners to decide, not me.  :D

Couldn't have said it better.
