Facebook Lite: only 50 friends?
« on: May 26, 2011, 01:03:24 AM »
A Facebook ex-employee has started his own app-based social network which limits you to 50 friends.

Is he on to something here, or just limiting his own business model?  I tend to avoid Facebook like the plague, and one of the reasons is the one that the app's creator mentions.  I mean, really, do you want your grandmother's hairstylist's nephew's gradeschool friend reading your private thoughts?

I can't help but be reminded of the Monkeysphere article as it pertains to social relationships, and think that the app's creator perhaps isn't completely out in left field.

Having to tell people "Sorry, you're not in the top 50" is probably awesome

Doesn't seem like such a revolutionary model to me...

People don't remember this, but facebook originally HAD a friend limit, I think 500?  The idea was that it was for college classes to stay in touch with each other in a much more personal way than friendster and myspace allowed.  But that cap came off when they realized they could make some serious cash.

It's bad enough my email and browser sessions get mined by spiders and corporate trolls.  I don't need to have my personal life out in public for all and sundry to snoop through and for all my so-called "friends" to get me on mailing and spam lists.  Between the way people can find you when you post pictures from your phones and the creeps out there that mine social networking sites for photos they can use as porn places like facebook make me cringe.

A friend said to me that they think that Facebook is a secret CIA tool to gather information on the public.  He was joking, but seriously, could you imagine if people found out the government was secretly gathering the type and amount of information that people are publicly posting on facebook?

I've seen jurors dismissed for cause on the basis of what they put on Facebook.

Ain't that the truth! I'm a bit mystified too by how the very same guys who are on the watch all the time about gathering of traffic data by governments or intelligence agencies, will happily reveal their wishes, thoughts, rants, acquaintances and intimate daily life on Facebook, open to anyone who cares to sign up as their friend, or friend of a friend. Or, by proxy, to all kinds of advertisers and bots allowed in on your data by the website.

I've seen people turned down for jobs because of their facebook pages.  The positions range from the lowest entry level to the most senior management.  HR departments are making it a standard practice to search social networking sites.
