Magic is real and surrounds us all. More importantly magic is old. Older than all religions. Magic is what built the Earth. The very lifeblood of what allowed all creatures to come into existence. Creatures who go extinct do so because they have lost their connection to the Lifeblood, Earth’s magic. People assume creatures go extinct because of deforestation or being hunted to extinction, that’s not the case though. Extinction happens through a transference of magic. When their time on the physical plane comes to an end they go back into the astral plane waiting for the time their access to the Lifeblood once more comes around.

Lifeblood comes from the Earth’s core. Unlike what scientists believe it to be, the Earth’s core is just that. A core of magic. Scientists believe the core is something that is impenetrable because of the protection of the magic within the core. Throughout the years the magic of the core has waned before. Each time this happens world wars break out, plagues, or astronomical events allowing the magic of the deceased to enter back into the Lifeblood.

At the turn of the 11th century the Lifeblood began creating magical creatures, dragons, unicorns, chimera, vampires, werewolves, even the fae. Their ability to access the Lifeblood was more pronounced than other beings including humans. This caused humans to begin seeking out and killing these creatures in attempts to harness the magic for themselves. In order to stop the bloodshed between humans and the creatures the Lifeblood cut humans off from magic completely. For twelve decades no human had access to the Lifeblood and then came Roman Aerus.

Plot: The Vampyr's are attacking the school and have attacked in the last two months. They are trying their best to find a way inside the school and not just the school grounds. They have been raising a young man for the last 20 years who has access to magic, and he is going to help the Vamypr's get inside the school.

Nestled deep in the middle of redacted is the Institute of Magnus. One of the largest, if not the largest, and oldest schools of magic known to some men. Comprised of many different buildings and surrounded by some of the strongest illusionary magic known to man, the school is ruled by the council of the Rose and the Grand Magnus is the overseer of it all.

The Institute was founded in 1747 by Magnus Gnostica and his then wife Astoria. The two of them yearned for the same thing. A safe place to teach their children about the Lifeblood and a haven for others who have the gift within them. It was Magnus and his wife Astoria that learned the histories better than anyone and it was Magnus who before his death struck a deal with the Protectors of the Lifeblood and the Keepers of the Core.

The institute teaches a variety of different types of magic to those who have access to the Lifeblood. Students spend a number of years within the halls of the Institute learning not only about magic but an entire world they might not have known about before that moment. At the age of twenty some might be remiss they are not yet old enough to drink alcohol, if they are from the United States, while others wait as patiently as they can to discover if they are blessed with the Lifeblood. This was a part of the agreement between the Keepers of the Core, the Protectors, and Magnus. All access to the Lifeblood would like dormant until the age of twenty.

The Institute has sprawling grounds, gardens, greenhouses, and training arenas with more land than seems possible. Grand lecture halls, dining areas, astronomy towers, libraries, research laboratories, and alchemy stations, all are held within the grounds of the Institute. Keeping with the times the Institute even has a few special houses for different magic users to be able to utilize for events.

The Institute has four different sections that are set apart specifically for housing. The housing is co-ed among all dorms, but they are separated out by year. Though most finish their schooling with the Institute by their fourth year, some stay on into their fifth and sixth, these students are still housed among the fourth-year students. The Institute has a separate section that is staff housing with the exception of the Grand Magnus.

The current Grand Magnus of the Institute is Veridia Jones, a graduate of the Institute and a 'legacy' with a long lineage of her family members having attended the school. Veridia is an accomplished magic user as all Grand Magnus' must be and she excels so strongly in Illusionary magic that many suggest she is much older than the sensible fifty she appears to be. Veridia is a previous member of the council of the Rose. She has two daughters who attend the Institute and survived her second late husband in death.

Veridia has held the title of Grand Magnus for five years now and until she earned that title Veridia was the Illusionary magic teacher at the school. From time to time, she still holds lectures on Illusionary magic and each year she picks an 'exemplary' student to teach Illusionary magic to during private lectures.

Pudding but where does the game start? Excellent question. The game will be held 1 week before the Celestial visit to the school that happens every year. While there will be GM led events and posts there is a certain sandbox element to the game. There is a central plot to the story, as seen in the first post.

Alright, so if this sounds like something you would be interested in please let me know! There is a plethora of more information on the World Building Page. Please pop over and read the information.

I will not be accepting more than 2 Protector characters at this time, though if you would like to enter the trials to try and become one that can be discussed. I will not be accepting any Vampyr characters at this time unless you can REALLY sell it.

All students must be a minimum of 20 years old no exceptions.

I will be accepting staff applications.

At this time I will only be allowing two main characters per person, please feel free to create NPCs that can be kidnapped or killed.

My Characters so people know the idea of what I'm looking for.

Sasha Combs

Name: Sasha Marie Combs

Age: 23

Gender: Cis-Female

Sexual Orientation: Bisexual

Student or Staff?: Third Year Student

Zodiac Sign: Aquarius

Magical Root: Ravna

Main Magic Studies: Animal Magic – struggles with being able to shapeshift. Sasha had been working on learning to change her appendages, but she struggles with it still. She has not successfully been able to change her physical form without magical intervention as of yet. Sasha has excelled at every other form of animal magic though and has been able to aide others in their dream stasis in taking over the mind of animals.

Secondary Magic Studies: Elemental Magic – Air Magic specifically. The first year at school Elemental magic was Sasha’s main course of study as her magical root is Ravna the dragon. She transitioned to this being her second field of study during her second year in school. Sasha has not been able to fly even a few feet off the ground and isn’t currently able to hold a force field of air magic very long. She does excel at the air whip, being able to take in a concentrated amount of air with her mouth and then physically grab it with her hand and use it as a whip.

Personality: Sasha is fun loving, bright, and adventurous. She tries not to take herself too seriously. Flirtatious to boot. She enjoys being around other people when not studying and has been known to throw a party or two in the three years she’s been at the Institute. Sasha considers herself morally sound though she would tell you her moral compass doesn’t point true north.

History: Raised by her father when her mother disappeared at the age of 4 Sasha didn’t know to anticipate coming into magic. Her father is a mundane and remarried when she was 6 to a wonderful women named Cassie who Sasha adores. Sasha has two half-brothers from that marriage, one of them is eighteen the other is sixteen. When Sasha came into her powers no one was expecting it, and they had no idea where they had come from. Sasha had been asleep as her twentieth birthday happened at 2 in the morning, Sasha woke up floating above her bed face against the ceiling. The sounds of her screams had woken the entire house. Minutes after she fell back on her bed a representative from the school arrived. Apparently, they were late due to a mix-up of addresses.

Sasha learned she had access to the Lifeblood through her mother’s side of the family but because her mother had abandoned them when she was little they couldn’t offer insight as to who her root magic was. Sasha agreed to go to the school and learn more about magic, and hopefully her mother. During her first week at the school Sasha learned her root magic came from Ravna during the opening ceremony when her own magic made the goblet rise up in the form of Ravna.

Her first year at school was hard. Sasha studied in all of her classes to the point of exhaustion, and she collapsed in the grand hall one day. Much to her disappointment the school had little information on her lineage they could offer. It wasn’t until the Grand Magnus met with her and suggested that Sasha begin forging her own way in the world that school began to become easier for Sasha and she made friends.

Ons/Offs

Jenna Johnson

Name: Jenna Johnson

Age: 22

Gender: Cis-Female

Sexual Orientation: Pansexual

Student or Staff?: Second Year Student

Zodiac Sign: Virgo

Magical Root: The Phoenix

Main Magic Studies: Illusionary magic. Jenna struggles with holding the hallucinations that people see much to her mother’s dismay. Jenna’s teacher has suggested that she try using the gift of song as a form of illusionary magic as she has a natural talent for it. The only reason she has Illusionary magic as a main study still is because of her mother.

Secondary Magic Studies: Elemental magic – Earth Magic. Jenna has a love for herbiary and working in the Institute gardens alongside the Master Herbalist she has been trying to work on incorporating her siren abilities to better control her Earth Magic, so far it has not happened.

Personality: Jenna is a bright young girl but a little timid. She often keeps to herself and hasn’t yet broken through the mold to make a lot of friends. Her sister says she has the patience of a saint.

History: Jenna is the youngest daughter of Veridia Jones with her older sister being two years older than her. Jenna was raised around magic and knowing of the world she was going to be pushed into. Her parents had an arranged union, not even a marriage, but an arranged union to create the two of them. Veridia came from the Phoenix and her father Orson came from Ravna. Jenna and her siblings were largely an experiment to see if children could be from two different Lifebloods. Jenna and her siblings were made to take the Goblet of Proving at a very young age.

Arriving at school many people attempted to make friends with Jenna until they learned of her lineage. Ironically it was not her mother they frowned upon but her father. Orson Wallace, had begun to lose sight of himself around Jenna’s 16th birthday and began seeking out Vampyr. He had a notion that they weren’t what they seemed. It drove him insane and the day Jenna came home and their house was a wreck all of Orson’s things had been stripped from it, Jenna knew the Protectors had stepped in and done what they needed to in order to protect magic.

Jenna feels she is very controlled by her Mother and does have a few tattoos that she has kept hidden from her since she was 18 one of the only forms of disobedience and rebellion she has gone through in her young life. Jenna and her sister both conveniently have their own rooms and just 'weren't given roommates'.

Interested! Thinking of maybe an alchemist. Got a few questions...

1) So is this taking pretty much in modern times?

2) Any sort of towns or whatnot nearby?

3) What sort of images for characters are allowed?

Thanks!

This is taking place in modern times with essentially.

There is a small village within the confines of the school magic but outside of that yes there is towns students would be allowed to visit.

AI generated or real face claims are both fine with me as far as images go.

An idea to get us started.

Character Sheet
Name: Dr. Joeseph Duffy
Age: 35
Gender: Cis-Male
Sexual Orientation: Hetero
Student or Staff?: Staff
Zodiac Sign: Pisces
Magical Root: The Isle of Calliope

Main Magic Studies: Dr. Duffy's speciality is so new that it doesn't have a solid name yet, but the leading contender is "Techno-Divination". A Divination specialist by arcane training, his personal research is centered around applying a more scientific mindset to magical rituals and using Science and Technology as a focus for Magic instead of thinking it as competition.

Secondary Magic Studies: Joeseph actually has a legitimate PhD in Astrophysics and is trying to use his scientific skills and training to refine Astrology. Attempting to Epiricize and Codify Astrological Calculations and marry them to Astrophysics has led to the creation of the Apotelesma, a complex magitech computer program that he believes will be capable of Astrological Horoscopes created on a level of precision never before seen. Accuracy is already paying off if not Range.

Personality: More than a bit of a Smartass, Sarcastic and Quippy. More than a bit annoyed at the tendency for the Magically Inclined to cast aside Practical concerns and Rational approaches. Tries to maintain both sides of his Academic Career, Scientific and Magical. Surprisingly good Teacher too, if he's willing to pay attention to effective teaching techniques.

History: Dr. Duffy was born into a family known for producing more than a few hermetic mages, usually of the Elemental persuasion, but he himself seemed to have no such talent for magic. Rejected by his more arcane relatives and seemingly by the lifeblood itself, Joseph instead turned to studying Science and Technology as a way to consort with “the enemy”.

Except the deeper into his studies he went the more things seemed to line up for him. If anything the advanced mathematics actually helped with some arcane knowledge and he wrote his first academic paper on arithmagical theorems. As an experiment he tried to write computer code with some arcane concepts in mind and even he was surprised that he started getting results. Version 1 of the Apotelesma program shocked the wizarding world, the Oracles most of all, but one can’t deny that it seems to work.

Now he starts his day applying scripts to raw CERN data like others check tea leaves to see the future and prepare for days of research and teaching - and he’s come back home to the school. For better or for worse.

Heya, I've got questions! I couldn't quite find the answers in the worldbuilding thread and wanted to ask here:

-It's stated that Magic exists and Always Has but had for a long time fallen from human grasp. With the mention of scientists amd theories revolving around the Core, does the general populace know of, or even believe, in magic? Is it a well kept secret, an open secret, or common knowledge if you look for it?

-It states no human gains access to Lifeblood until they reach the age of 20. Is there a process or specific event that occurs when it awakens? Or is there a group of people that seek out individuals with awakened lifeblood, both to let them know and protect them from the vampyr?

Excellent questions.

The Mundane do not believe in magic outside of sleight of hand and fancy shows for example. Magic is a very well-kept secret.

The Lifeblood itself keeps magic from flowing within a person until the age of twenty because of the first human to gain it again. It sounds silly but simply 'it's magic'. There is a group of people that keep tabs on magical individuals. It makes it easier when there is so few sets of magical lineage. Technically no, there is nothing protecting them from Vampyrs.

Ok rad, thank you! So then these individuals that keeps tabs for magical lineages, do they just show up one day or something? How does a person get invited into the school if they had no knowledge of their lineage or magic exsisting?

Follow up question and circling back a bit, once awakened is it possible for someone to "accidentally" use magic after the magic valve is turned open at 20, or is utilizing it something that HAS to be trained with specific incantations/runes/gestures/etc?

Upon their twenty birthday those potential Lifeblood holders are given essentially a piece of paper. If they can read what it is upon the paper they will be invited to the Institute. Though no one must accept magic.

They could definitely accidentally use magic if they are not in control of their emotions, or if they come from a long family of learning magic and have already studied.

Once I have some free time, I'll think up a character for this! <3 It'll be a male character but other than that I'll have to think about it for a little bit before posting anything. It looks great to me though! I'll post in OOC and send you pms when I am able to sit down and think about my character! Ah you said it's not currently up and running, so I'll just leave my interest here for whenever/if you ever decide to get it up again.
CHECK UPDATES PLEASE!
