Show Us Your Wings
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
And God saw the light, that it was good.
And God divided the light from the darkness...

Light. Darkness. Good and evil, Heaven and Hell. From the beginning there has been a division, with God as the inscrutable creator who brought the world into being. Served by a heavenly host of Angels, order was brought into the formless, chaotic void, and so it has been ever since, with the angels and demons fighting over the grace of God to guide and protect humanity. It's a pretty story, isn't it? But that’s all it is. A story. It’s a bedtime tale for humans.

But like most works of fiction there is a grain of truth to it.

There is no good, no evil - only order and chaos. There are angels and demons, but angels can descend down to Hell and demons can ascend up to Heaven. Their alliance can easily shift from one to the other and then swing back round again as their experiences on Earth corrupt or purify them.

Despite what humans like to think angels and demons don't care about them. There are no angels standing by to guard the just and no demons whispering dark temptations to corrupt the pious. There's no point, unless such a task would further a Divine goal. And there is no God. They left and they’re never coming back. Or maybe God is coming back. Any day now. And on that day there will be a reckoning as the state of Creation is assessed and the stewards of Creation will be praised or punished for their part in what has happened to the world.

No one knows for sure. Just like humans must choose to blindly cling to faith in a higher power or willfully cast it aside so too must angels and demon decide if they should believe God is long gone or believe that God is soon to return.

It’s the Twilight of Creation. God is absent and all the great Archangels and Archdemons are dead. No demon or angel alive in this day and age has ever even met God. Yet the eternal conflict between Order and Chaos must be maintained. On Earth demons and angels in disguise wage a cold war against each other. In the sterile stillness of Heaven, the dark chaos of Hell, and the mysterious In-Between both the remaining Divines battle for control and balance.

Yet a new threat has risen to both sides. Human souls have always been the power source of Heaven and Hell. But the well of human souls is rapidly drying up as the mortal population grows ever larger. Delegates from Heaven and Hell now come together to solve this problem - if they don’t end up killing each other first.

Character Creation Guidelines

PM Your Sheet to Dotley & Ouroboros. Please send it to both us! Don't post it in the thread until you've been given permission.

All Who Apply May Not Be Accepted. We want to be clear and upfront about this. The story is intended to start off and stay as a small group. We’re looking for writers and characters that will mesh with what we already have. Take a look at the current cast of characters and let them inspire the creation of your own character. We want to see characters that are going to harmonize well and/or spark that good sort of friction with each other.

Two Character Limit. Each writer may only have two characters. You can choose any combination that you prefer. Play both an Angel and a Demon. Or two Angels. Or two Demons. With the cyclic nature of alliance it's also possible to play a character that will switch sides.

No Humans. This story is about the Angels and Demons. Humans may be used as bit characters to help flesh out the world or support certain plotlines, but they won’t be accepted as part of the main cast.

No Teenagers or Excessive Innocence. When choosing FCs please select someone over twenty. And keep in mind we’re writing inhuman characters that are quite literally thousands of years old. They should not be utterly clueless about life on Earth or totally ignorant about sex.

Monogamy Is A No Go. A delightfully messy and wonderfully complicated web of polyamory is the name of the game for this story when it comes to pairings. Must all characters hook up with each other or fall in love? Nope, but there won't be any pairing off into exclusive monogamous couples here.

Flexible Sexualities Are Encouraged. While we won’t require that all characters identify as bisexual/pansexual/etc it is highly encouraged that characters have some flexibility in their romantic inclinations and sexual desires. A central theme of the story is polyamory so characters should be comfortable around all sorts of pairing configurations whether it be M/M, F/F, or F/M.

Non-White FCs Are Encouraged. Angels and Demons reflect all of humanity and all of humanity reflects the Angels and Demons. Every race, ethnicity, etc is represented so feel free to use any FC you like.

Wings Are Important. Put some thought into those wings. Your character’s wings are basically your character’s soul. They are the most intimate part of your character and represent all that they are. You have total freedom in choosing the style, length, etc. The only limitation here to be aware of is color. White wings designate absolute orderly purity. Wings that are pure black signify severe chaotic corruption.

Heaven Is Not Good and Hell Is Not Evil. There is no Good or Evil. There is only Order and Chaos. Both Angels and Demons frequently murder, rape, steal, lie, warmonger, etc. Everything is a shade of grey on the morality scale. The difference is how each side goes about it. Heaven is Order. Their malevolent atrocities or benevolent kindness are planned. Hell is Chaos. Their good deeds or acts of cruelty are spontaneous.

And posted when not too long ago I built up a Demon:the Fallen character I'm eager to play...  ;D

Can we get some backstory on potentially why God left, or is that part of a mystery plot to uncover? Also, how much would say, the rebellion of Lucifer (if it actually happened, that is) play into the current state of affairs?

Reasons behind asking
I ask because in reference to Demon:the Fallen, Lucifer led the rebellion to give intellect to mankind to fulfil their potential, as before they were little more than unobservant monkeys and God disallowed any Angel to appear before mankind or communicate with them. Any Angel that asked why this was were invited by God to see the big plan through their eyes, those ones disappeared and never returned... So with an oncoming prophecy of a doom coming to mankind, Lucifer rebelled to do what he felt was right for the young humans who the angels loved as much as God and make them awesome.
This pissed God off no end and eventually he leaves reality to start shit over elsewhere (or he potentially killed himself in laying the smack down on Eden) though it's pretty much said the rebellion was done by Lucifer under God's order to begin with... Fuck knows why if that's the case...   ::)

Such stuff happening as part of why an Angel would consider giving the middle finger to the almighty's way is a potential biggy. Or possibly give backstory to a demon that only wanted to do the right thing but Fell anyway and may yet be redeemed.

Anyway, I have character thoughts, just would like to know a bit more background into the state of things in Heaven and Hell, like pros and cons to both sides, etc.  :-) I don't wanna make assumptions or anything. ^^

There's not much in the way of backstory as to why God left. Angels and demons have fallible memories, and those who were closest to God have all been destroyed. What little remains is as suspect as the religious writings and traditions of the humans, which are mostly a collection of stories about the Divine Beings' manifestations on Earth. It's also not really a mystery - God is gone, and God isn't coming back. Probably. Definitely. Maybe. God is most notable by their absence and the uncertainty the Divines have regarding God's return, and how they individually address the absence of authority is part of the overall mood of the game.

Also, there is no Lucifer/Satan/Morningstar, what have you. While it's entirely possible that there was an angel or demon who might have claimed that at some point, it's entirely fiction. God created angels and demons without any nonsense about creating one to Fall and lead others with them. Light and dark, order and chaos - they were made to balance each other out. They were also made to change and shift, again to bring about balance between the opposing forces. Angels have succumbed to the lure of Chaos and fallen into demonic frenzy and degradation in the vortex of sensation and violence that is Hell; demons have discovered the pleasures of Order and ascended to the sterile, constricting halls of Heaven. Some have done this more than once, some over and over again as the balance shifts.

It's so incredibly amazing to see a game that actually says outright 'polyamory is being explored here'. It makes me feel like something i live and that is a huge part of my life is actually getting a little more exposure to the world at large, and exposure inevitably leads to understanding and perhaps even.. acceptance. I'll keep an eye on this for sure.

Lunaris

While I've been on a heavy sci-fi kick lately, your call for things to be quite different from multiple perspectives makes me very interested in this RP. I want to wait until the answers come to Red's very good questions before I start drawing up ideas, though. =]

Dotley

First things first. Thank you for the supportive comments! I wasn't sure if a group story with an overt and enforced theme of polyamory would be well received, but I figured if both me and Ouro were fond of poly shenanigans for our characters that there had to be more of us out there.

And before I start answering questions I just want to preface it with something - this story really is intended to stay fairly small. Because of that we're purposefully holding back on deciding everything right from the start and intentionally leaving some things vague. Ouro and I aren't really going to be waving an almighty GM hammer around to answer everything. It's intended to be more collaborative. We want to leave room for the writers that end up joining us in this tale to contribute their own ideas and help us flesh out the world that's been created here.

And now onto some answers!

Quote from: RedPhoenix on November 07, 2016, 11:51:10 PMAre all angel wings feathered and avian?

Nope! What the wings look like is entirely up to the writer. Both Angel and Demon wings can be feathery. Or they could be leathery. Etc. Writer's choice and preference.

Quote from: RedPhoenix on November 07, 2016, 11:51:10 PMDoes the ability to take on human forms include the ability to hide wings and halo? Or are all interactions with humanity overt? Can an alternate form be simply the angel without the signs of divinity? From the characters it seems angels can choose when to manifest wings and halos is this correct or just for certain ones?

By default wings and halos/horns are hidden. Wings are something an Angel or Demon chooses to manifest. While they can be seduced or coerced into manifesting their wings ultimately it's a conscious decision the Divine Being makes. They can't technically be forced into showing off their wings.

Wings are a huge social feature of both angelic and demonic cultures. Manifesting one's wings has a lot of meaning behind it and the context in which it happens is important. Because displaying one's wings reveal with one hundred accuracy where one falls on the order or chaos spectrum it isn't typically something that's done in public. It's not something that most Angels or Demons want to share with others. It's private. It's intimate. It's basically their soul. Revealing that to someone else, letting them see it and touch it, is
a big deal.

So wing manifestation tends to be something that's done with lovers or friends or some other figure that the Divine has a close relationship with.

However, like all taboos there are gonna be some that love mucking around with them. There are some Demons and Angels that will manifest their wings as a dominance display gambit, especially if they're high on the corruption or purity spectrum. Just to prove how loyal they are to either Order or Chaos They can be used to threaten or embarrass another. And it's very likely that the reason humans even know about these winged, powerful humans is because some Angels or Demons in ages long past had some serious kink for showing off their wings to humanity.

Quote from: RedPhoenix on November 07, 2016, 11:51:10 PMIs humanity any more aware of divine beings in this setting than our world?

Nope. Humanity's current awareness and knowledge of the divine is about the same as it is in the real world.

Quote from: RedPhoenix on November 07, 2016, 11:51:10 PMHow large is the community of divine beings? Do angels and demons all pretty much know each other or are there many strangers? Are new ones ever created? Do divine beings know when another of their kind is about?

Large, but not large enough. Especially compared to what it once was. There's definitely some over employment problems in both Heaven and Hell. Their population is big enough that it's still very possible to meet strangers, but then we're working with inhuman characters that are immortal until killed. If a Divine being really put forth the effort and was a social butterfly that ping ponged between Heaven and Hell it's possible that they could meet and familiarize themselves with all of Divinity. They've had thousands of years to do so. If they made it their hobby it's possible they've come close to meeting everyone there is to meet.

The thing about divine beings is that their numbers are finite. God didn't create them like they created humans. Humanity can repopulate and sustain itself without God's interference. The divine can't replenish their population. They can't procreate through sex with each other or with humans and they don't have the tools, design schemes, or working knowledge to create more of themselves in the way that God did.

It's one reason why the war between them on Earth has gone "cold" and they're no longer openly smiting each other in front of humans. Once you kill a Divine being that's it. You've permanently lowered the divine population. Because of that it has become increasingly popular to trick, seduce, coerce, convince, etc others into ascension or decension. You could say killing your enemy is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Why not just win them over to your side instead?

Of course murder still happens occasionally. It's just seen as something that needs more justification these days as compared to the past because both Demons and Angels are starting to face the consequences of all that rampant genocide against each other.

As for Divine Being recognizing each other - I'd say it'd be more fun if they usually can't tell. Makes for some serious paranoia and uncertainty while the Divine are on Earth.

Eyes: Her hazel eyes are large and expressive.
Body Type: Marzena carries the figure of a dancer or gymnast. Her upper body is petite yet toned and gives way to generous curves at her hips and derriere as well as powerful, shapely legs. She is nimble and athletic.

Horns: A pair of spiraling ivory horns nearly a foot in length extend from her hairline.
Wings: Marzena has four charcoal-colored translucent, glittering gossamer wings outlined in a violet aura. The larger of the pairs sprout from her upper back and span nearly eight feet. The smaller ones are at half that and flare out from above her bottom.

Personality Traits: Charismatic || Passionate || Clever || Free-Spirited || Daring ||Mischievous || Vain|| Mercurial || Sarcastic || Sadistic || Impatient || Vengeful

Corruption Rating: Strong
Role in Hell: Inspiration. Marzena often appears before other beings to lure or trick them into acts of spontaneity and intoxicate them with joy wrought from the freedom of expression.
Ascension/Descension Occurrences: Once in her distant past, Marzena became deeply infatuated with an angel and was so curious about the charismatic being that she worked to ascend and attempted to mirror their lifestyle of order and serenity. It didn’t take long for her base nature to win out however, and she soon found such an existence to be stifling, pointless, and repetitive. The experience reaffirmed her desire to express and engender spontaneity in others to expose them to the pleasure of experiencing the unexpected.

Standard Abilities: All Agents of the Divine share a standard set of abilities. It is part of their nature.

  • Divine Physiology - All Divine Beings have the ability to change their forms. While each Divine Being was granted with a body upon creation they can change their form at a cost, allowing each to experience the variances in gender and race that make up humanity.
  • Wing Manifestation -Unlike bodies, wings cannot be changed. Each Divine Being's wings are unique in number, shape, and pattern. Wings are a window into the Divine Being's very nature, showing how closely aligned to Order or Chaos they are. It also displays their health and serves as a way to definitively identify a Divine Being.
  • Regeneration - Divine Beings are notoriously difficult to kill. They heal from bodily injuries extraordinarily quick and are immune to earthly diseases, viruses, and poisons.
  • Flight and Quick-Travel - Divine Beings have the ability to fly, with or without their wings. Divine Beings can also travel to Heaven or Hell, with the ease of travel dependent on their alignment with Order and Chaos, or to the In-Between - a space between worlds where most Divine conflicts occur.
  • Miracle Working - Demons can perform miracles that prove God’s brilliance and sow discord, chaos, and randomness into the world.

Personal Abilities: Each Divine Being was created with certain abilities that allow them to best fulfill their function.

  • Vision of Inspiration – With a wave of her hand, prolonged eye contact, a spoken suggestion, Marzena is able to spark visions within her subject of some random act that strays from the norm. Often times, it touches upon some hidden desire that would require them to break away from tedium, disregard a superior's command, or leave behind a profession or home.
  • Share Sensation – When another being is physically touched by or touching her, Marzena can cause them to feel her sensations and emotions and vice-versa.
  • Shatter Binds – When Marzena places her hands on objects or buildings used to contain or restrain beings or things, she can cause them to collapse, shatter, tear, or loosen. The larger and more durable the object, the longer it takes to be disrupted.
  • Anarchic Smite – Marzena may channel intensely destructive energy to smite objects or beings. However, the element used manifests randomly and can be lightning, fire, or ice. She has no control over the element, though she can manipulate the destructive power of this ability to a small degree.

Weaponry: Marzena is highly skilled in unarmed combat with various martial arts as mixing up styles tends to throw her targets into confusion. She is also talented with rapiers, staves, handguns, and whips. The latter comes more as a side effect of her love of kink rather than practice or martial training.

Service Record: With the exception of a short stint in Heaven, Marzena exists to shatter conventions. Whether in Heaven, Hell, or Earth, her presence has almost always led to some inexplicable occurrence somewhere and with someone. Earthly lawyers, accountants, and law officers have abandoned their careers after being inspired to create feverish works of art or lost themselves in music and dance after being graced by her presence. Angelic sentries have abandoned posts, become insubordinate, or completely fallen after encounters with her. She has appeared on battlefields to wreak havoc and spread paranoia through unpredictable displays of elemental power used to smite seemingly random targets.

Because of this, she has a nickname for every century she’s lived and then some. Although her appearances usually seem benevolent to some degree, there’s always some underlying danger involved. She was rumored to once have appeared within a poor village on Earth to change the fortunes of the commoners within if only to break the bleak monotony of their existence by causing the sky to rain gold coins. Of course, said rain meant she pelted herself with hard currency and squeaked in pain as she ran for cover along with the villagers. Once the storm ended, she answered their confusion with an exuberant grin and shrug before giving them a bright side. Sure, the rain pretty much destroyed their homes and crops and left many with injuries, but the money could then be used to start all over again. New homes, new perspectives on pain, new crops, and new influence. What wasn't there to like?

She is also known to sneak into the midst of well-organized military units or peaceful cities to call down lightning, burn down buildings, or destroy dams just to change things up and throw complacency to the wind. While not overtly cruel, she has been known to smite random beings just to change their perspective on life. Humans especially tend to view life differently after surviving a lightning strike. She is loathed by bastions of order and known to play roles in the toppling of tyrants and regimes, whether by stirring up rebellion, sabotaging prisons, causing comical mishaps, or outright destroying assets.

While she is impatient to a fault, she has been known to appear before Angels to peacefully debate with them in favor of her cause. Other times, the friendly conversations are usually just a means to get closer to someone she finds to be cute, entertaining, or different enough to pique her interest. She tends to flirt with others or subject them to randomized mischief if only to see how far she can go before they are charmed or chasing her down. To her, a static life is little more than prolonged death. Without freedom and change, life is pointless. She believes that Creation is the ultimate expression of chaos as the introduction of something new into the universe means that change is happening somewhere somehow.

Sexuality: A switch through and through, Marzena lives for sharing and introducing pleasures to and with new beings. She is both sadistic and masochistic in sensual matters and loves teasing and torturing partners until they are consumed with the desire to pay her back and vice-versa. She particularly loves being spanked, paddled, or flogged for her transgressions. When an encounter becomes too predictable, her interest in her partner or partners will wither and wane. Those that introduce her to new sensations and experiences will win her attention and possibly her heart.

Developed Relationships: Marzena and the Agent of Indulgence, Liriden have been off and on partners in crime for centuries. The Lustful One was partly responsible for reminding Marzena of her true purpose when she was nearly lost to Order. They have worked together on multiple occasions to topple oppressors though she usually departs when The Reveler's celebrations stretch on long enough to become predictable.

And another update to the cast list!  :-)

At this point we'd like to see any new character submissions be Angels/Demons that identify most comfortably as male or are equally comfortable identifying as all genders.

Aliases: Liam Carroll | Ezra Morgenstern | Goddard Faust | Lewys Pryce
Preferred Gender: Male, though he enjoys switching things up on the regular.

Height: 6'6"
Hair: Short, dark brown hair cut short on the sides and long on top, often rather disheveled
Eyes: Almond-shaped, deep-set brown eyes
Body Type: Murmur is lean and lanky, weighing in at only 210, his muscles are compact, toned and long, giving him more of a swimmer's build.
Distinguishing Features: Murmur has very thick, dark brows that cast deep shadows on his deep-set eyes and high cheekbones, they also give him a somewhat sinister appearance.

Horns: Large, thick, pitch-black ram's horns extend up from Murmur's brow and curl back over the sides of his head.
Wings: Murmur's wings are closer to that of a bat, than a bird, though their construct is oddly similar to an insect.  The four elongated ovals extend a total of eleven and a half feet from the center of his back, one set extending upward while the other stretches downward.  The thin, leathery membrane is covered by a thick coating of velvety fur, similar to the down on an ungulate's nose.  The fur is dappled, the splotches ranging from eggshell white to inky black, and every shade in between.

Personality Traits: Lazy || Confident || Charming || Intense || Witty || Hedonistic || Cunning || Thoughtful || Talented

Corruption Rating: Strong
Role in Hell: Murmur has made it his mission to walk among humans and sow doubt.  He breeds resentment and suspicion in marriages, paranoia in the workplace, self-doubt among artists and innovators, rebellion in children, ect.  Where there is a human questioning the truth of what their eyes tell them, or their heart knows, there is Murmur, whispering in their ear.
Ascension/Descension Occurrences: Murmur was once Matthias, an angel, before he descended.  He has not ascended again since then, but it's not outside the realm of possibility.

  • Soul Bondage – Murmur has the ability to summon forth the souls of the dead, humans only, and force them to do his bidding.  These souls do not have the ability to engage mindfully with the corporeal world, beyond manifesting for short periods, and moving small objects short distances.  Both acts drain the spirit's energy rapidly, and eventually force it back to where it was summoned from to recharge.  The souls can also be forced to burn themselves out in a blaze of manic energy as poltergeists, but this destroys the spirit and it can never be resummoned.
  • Empathic Echo – Murmur can sense the emotions of others, and he can either mimic those emotions, manipulate them or enhance them.  He can force others to feel what he wishes for them to feel, or he can simply fine-tune their current emotions by either amping them up or turning them down.  He can pick and choose which emotions he wants to manipulate, and to what degree, with a high degree of delicacy and accuracy.
  • Breaking the Chains – Murmur has the ability to slip into the minds of others and enlighten them to the reality of the world around them.  This can come in the form of true enlightenment, or it can be twisted to reveal only the harshest truths and those most likely to drive the victim to acts of social unrest, personal violence or even madness and suicide.
  • Song of Satyr – Murmur can manifest any musical instrument, even those that don't actually exist, and play them perfectly.  He also has an amazing, even hypnotic, singing voice and knows all the words and notes to every song ever written, as well as those that haven't been written yet.  Basically, when it comes to music, he can do it all, and do it flawlessly.

Weaponry: His Ax.  It's the only weapon he has, and he rarely uses it, preferring to talk his way out of fights, or simply avoid them altogether.

Service Record: Murmur, back when he was still Matthias, loyally served Order and Heaven.  However, after God left, he fell to Chaos and fought viciously in the first war between Order and Chaos.  He grew disillusioned with battle during that war, gradually losing his taste for bloodshed as more and more Angels and Demons died at one another's hands.  Finally, he left the endless battlefield and went to earth, choosing to use his mind to wreak chaos there, rather then using his hands to spill forth divine life up above.  As it turned out, knowledge was mankind's greatest weakness, and doubt followed knowledge like a lovesick teenager.  Galileo, Darwin, Anton Lavey, Julian Assange...each one given a bit of knowledge, and each one brought about enough doubt to shake the very foundations of the world.

Sexuality: Murmur is Omnisexual.  He's also a switch, and prefers partners who are also switches.  The only real turn-off for him is too much of the same thing too often.  He loves to change things up, go from having wild, kinky sex to slow, loving intimacy, to rough, vicious hate sex and then on to something different.  He likes switching up the location, the time of day and partners.  Variety, as they say, is the spice of life.  Biblio's O&Os
