The voice actor for King of the Hill's John Redcorn has been shot. Died on the first day of Pride Month.

His husband stated the shooting was the result of a years-long homophobic campaign of harassment against the couple.

Trigger warning if you read the article: hate crime/homophobia, and the death of their pet dog as well

One thing I'm convinced of as more and more elections around the world happen. Is that the left doesn't really understand what is and isn't a political liability in regards to alot fo working class voters. This seems to be a trend in alot of countries, and even if the conservatives don't win these elections like in France, everyone is shocked that these parties and people do as well as they do and never seem to understand why these right wing parties and leaders resonate with regular people.

I'm not polish but I've been watching this election cycle out of interest and I kinda get why alot of people just don't really give a fuck about some of the stuff the polish left tried to slap Nawrocki with. I also like to think I'm a pretty standard, blue collar voter in my own country. So I'm looking at Nawrocki from the perspective of a working class guy.

Sure he participated in some football hooliganism, big woop, who gives a shit? This is Europe, for better or worse football hooliganism is part of life and I'm willing to bet a non-trivial portion of the polish working class has participated in a bar brawl or or football crush or two. You expect them to give a shit that the president also did? If anything that makes him more relatable, not less. Same with rhe bit about the chewing tobacco or whatever that really was he was putting in his mouth. Lots of people use tobacco pouches or chewing tobacco these days, so again, who gives a shit? It's not a liability, it's relatable.

Even the bit about him being a doorman in his youth and helping guests meet up with hookers. That was so many years ago that again, who really cares? Does it have any impact on the problems facing the country today? I can see how alot of regular people are probably thinking that it likely didn't matter back then, and certainly doesn't matter now.

Now I don't condone brawling and violence and my personal views on on prostitution is that it like recreational drugs it should be legalized as to make it safer via regulations and protections.

But my point is that I get why he won, and why alot of people simply didn't give a shit about the things Nawrocki's opponents thought was important to focus on. In the eyes of some these either weren't issues to begin with, or weren't more important than the problems facing the country right now.

Writing people off as stupid is part of the problem in and of itself. Because they clearly think that whatever is going on in Poland is more important than worrying about a little tobacco use and field brawls that happened decades ago.

So... in 1.5 hour, the ceremony of swearing in the new Polish president will start. Starting today, Karol Nawrocki, the ex-football hooligan, will be new head of state. Thankfully, Polish president has a much weaker political position that the prime minister, but... this will, quite probably, be a mess. Ugh.

One upside to this situation is: I can finally go to Andrzej Duda's FB profile and, without any fear of being prosecuted, tell him what a moronic, spineless pufferfish he is.

Despite my current employment, I don't generally follow sportsball news.  This, however...

TL;DR - Some idiots are throwing unspecified (but apparently non-metallic) sex toys onto the courts of WNBA games 'as a joke' that 'was supposed to go viral'.  Some of these people have been now been charged with crimes that could land them on sex-offender registries.  FAFOMF.

"Pranks" and attempts to go viral are a plague. Social media can be so harmful  >:(

Sexualization and disrespect for sportswomen is disgusting, too.

Yesterday, over here, we had the state holiday of Polish Military Day. The celebrations included a big military parade in Warsaw (and over at the sea). If anyone's curious, the full parade can be seen here:

As we discussed earlier, Trump organized a parade not too long ago, some of the criticism of it was that such parade smack of authoritarian dictatorships. I wonder if this Polish parade feels authoritarian, too? Back here, it's considered a normal and cool thing to happen (just look at the crowds gathered).

Yeah, it *is* a flex of military power. But there's nothing wrong with some flexing, especially if you're close to Russia...

greenknight

The fundamental difference is if such a thing is a normal part of the culture. It isn't in the US, thus it becomes a big deal.

It's a bit more complex than that.  The US has had military parades and has been fundamentally militarist for a very long time - even JFK Jr had a military parade as part of his inauguration - but that was in the context of the Cold War, in 1961.

It's been 64 years since then.  Maybe that was formative to DJT's impressions, I don't know.

Now, I don't necessarily object to the US military having a big parade for it's 250th birthday, which was the reason for the parade.  My objection lied in the context of that parade coinciding with the President's birthday and simultaneity with the DOGE cuts - a militaristic event, which could be critiqued for all that a militaristic event is, being co-opted by circumstance into an authoritarian event.

Militarism is a big part of US culture - it's not everyone by any means, but there is a reason that air shows are so popular, for example.  Authoritarianism is also a big part of US culture, unfortunately, but there are many people who don't accept that.

Setting aside my politics and speaking in my capacity as an officer in the Ready Reserve, the parade squicked me out. Tanks and APVs have no place in our nation’s capital and DJT isn’t JFK. IDGAF about the anniversary. The optics were terrible, particularly right now. All involved would’ve been happier with a taxpayer-funded keg party, which would’ve been cheaper. Oh, and not having the VA gutted.

I agree on all points, JD.  DJT ain't JFK and the Cold War isn't what it was.  The USA was (a year ago) the economic, cultural and military axis around which the world turns.  Internations Relations Graduates who work in the DC lobby circuit refer to it as "The Capital of the World".

The optics were terrible, both in the authoritarian, homage for Dear Leader hidden behind a wink, sense and in the "and oh by the way this administrations stated goals include crippling the US government, the economy and the military, and we're making great progress."

"Squicked" is a good word for how I felt about it.  I can think of other words.

“Squicked” is the nicest, most non-confrontational term I could think of. :) My opinion of Dear Leader and his administration is unprintable, even by E standards, and people here write some seriously graphic shit.

As a lawyer and former civil servant, I have this quaint belief in the rule of law and believe subject matter expertise should be listened to.

There are things I have to say about DJT.  I have to say them because they are unprintable.  I believe in the great Woody Guthrie's assessment of Fred Trump, and that the apple didn't even bother falling off the tree, let alone 'far' from it.  If we invoked the Golden Rule of 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you', DJT would be walking even more funny than he does now.  A transversely-oriented cactus would probably be involved as a start.

Fucking righteous. :) Guthrie is one of my spirit animals, and not many folks know Old Man Trump. I don’t know why it’s not more of a thing.

I also don’t know how I still have a security clearance as most of my old bosses and coworkers—conscientious, educated professionals, multilingual—lost theirs. Maybe I’m too stupid to merit scrutiny, or maybe it’s because I’m from Texas.

I take the systematic dismantling of State and CIA personally, ditto the VA.

(Also, I have a lot of cacti.)

It's the ongoing obliteration of Education that concerns me the most. Trump thinks he is carving away 'waste', while the people pushing his buttons behind the scenes are systematically crippling our country's future to ensure they have a steady supply of ignorant, poor, and easily manipulated voters to keep them in power.

And it wont be easily reversed either. To paraphrase Warren Buffet, "it takes decades to build a functional government and months to destroy it".
