Harvey Dent is a passionate man, passionate about justice, passionate about Gotham City, passionate about the future. As an attorney, he made a fast name for himself as hard-nosed, dedicated, and thoroughly incorruptible, racking up a stunning record of successful prosecutions in a very short amount of time. Elected DA four years ago, his tireless efforts to clean up the city have only intensified, and Dent seems genuinely fearless and almost fanatically dedicated in his effort to wipe out organized crime and make Gotham once again safe for honest businessmen and families.

Janus is a passionate man, passionate about power, passionate about control, passionate about his future. The mysterious head of the Janus organization appeared seemingly out of nowhere four years ago and has been systematically absorbing the operations of Gotham’s faltering criminal enterprises ever since. Violent, ruthless, and methodical, he acts largely by proxy, leading some to speculate there is no leader at all, merely a rotating board of directors or a front for some larger internationalist syndicate that prefers it’s presence remain unknown. So far all investigations have led to dead ends…or dead bodies, at any rate.

Background

Harvey Dent was born to a wealthy family, his father a longstanding member of the city council, and grew up attending the same social functions and private school as any number of Gotham’s elite. He spent his youth observing up close the downwards spiral of this once great city, his father frequently the subject of death threats by mobsters and constantly stymied in his reform efforts by an endless series of corrupt officials. He witnessed up close the terrible suffering endured by his boyhood friend, Bruce Wayne, when his parents were gunned down by unknown criminals, and never brought to justice.

Unlike Bruce, however, Harvey was not content to hide away in his mansion and his wealth and draw a curtain against the troubles of the real world. He was determined to do something and dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice and the revival of Gotham City, graduating law school and passing the bar at a stunningly young age. Harvey Dent became one of the most renowned prosecuting attorneys in the state, tireless in his efforts, bringing charges against some of the most dangerous and seemingly untouchable criminals in Gotham’s underworld. When he was elected District Attorney, it was heralded as a great change in the city’s fortune, a new era in which the old lawless corrupt ways were to be swept aside in a new tide of youthful energy and optimism.

Unfortunately, behind the scenes things were less perfect. For every criminal Dent put behind bars, it seemed another more ruthless one took his place. The criminal rackets and invested corruption never seemed to disappear, only changed faces, and as Harvey’s anger and frustration mounted, he decided on a simple new tactic to try. There was no point in pulling weeds while leaving the field open for the next infestation to take root. But what if someone was planted there first? Someone like himself?

What started as a game soon became an obsession, all the darkest parts of Dent’s personality, festering after years of witnessing the pointlessness of his own crusade for justice and the abiding evil of men that thwarted him at every turn, forming into their separate personality. Nicknamed Janus, his criminal empire has begun to slowly expand, absorbing the holdings of Gotham’s traditional crime families, exhibiting a brutality, violence, and lack of respect for the underworld’s rules not witnessed in years.

And now Dent and Janus war against each other even as they war against Gotham, one still pursuing law and order, and the other becoming increasingly enmeshed in the heady world of absolute power and criminality. Can one man sustain such a duality forever or is there a breaking point? Will he be one or the other…and how can he be made choose between his own warring natures?
