This spell provides a +2 bonus to AC and saving throws, and prevents creatures not native to the caster's native plane from approaching within 1 yard. If cast upon an object, it prevents non native creatures from approaching as normal, and enables the object to make a save vs. spell at the same bonus as the casting cleric against any magic cast upon it. Good beings are not hindered by protection from evil, and evil beings are not hindered by protection from good. Beings of the type warded against cannot benefit from protection spells.
Many religions have variations of this spell, the most notable of which is the Elder Sign. The Elder Sign provides a +2 bonus to AC and saving throws against a variety of creatures, especially the minions of Cthulhu, and prevents them from approaching within 2 yards.(The warded creatures are Aboleths, Behemoths, Byakhee, Cthonians, Dark Young, Deep Ones, Krakens, Moon Beasts, and Shoggoths.)
