Ah! So you want to be a Harper? Well there is more to them than what is seen. Harpers are more then just musicians and singers, dancers and fighters. Harpers are the craft that creates the teachers and the historians of Pern! If you are a Harper at Heart, you will learn many things. Among these is musical theories, how to play a variety of instruments, how to dance, how to sing, and how to teach others the history of Pern. Pern is a world that does all of it's teaching through Ballads, Ballads that talk of the Past. That tell people about how the world is, and what happened to make it the way it is.
Harpers are selected at the age of 8, and sent to the Craft Hall to learn. Some are taught by a Master in a Hold - if a Master is stationed - and some are given their basics by a Journeyman, to see if they have the skill, before they are sent to the Craft Hall.
Every day is about learning something new, about finding out more about yourself.
Male Harpers are put on a singing hiatus when they enter puberty, they are trained in other ways - more heavily - so that the Harpers can find out how their voices will change as they mature. Upon maturation they are sectioned into certain singing options.
The Current Master Harper of Pern is a gentleman in his 80's. Very spry man, with a penchant for learning new technologies.
