Nergal is the benevolent judge of the Underworld. After death collects souls, they are taken to the court of Nergal, where they are judged. Nergal is a kind and fair judge, and works hard to keep souls from going to the lower planes for minor and/or unintentional infractions. He also makes attempts to restore the faith of those who have died, so they can move on to a plane other than the underworld. It is because of the efforts of Nergal that the raise dead spell is possible to cast so easily. Death is the god of the dying, and Nergal is the god of the dead. Those in mourning give prayers to Nergal, as do exorcists trying to rid an area of ghosts.
