Physical Description

Sandra is five feet six inches tall with a lithe, toned build and youthful appearance. She has dark brown eyes and long dark brown hair that she'll sometimes dye or add highlights to. A few scars here and there, but nothing too out of the ordinary. On the day to day, her clothes lean mostly towards street chic with a few of her own eclectic touches, with sportswear for when she's training, but Sandra can also pull off something like a classier dress when she needs to. For jobs, Sandra typically wears a black leather outfit and lower face mask.

Persona

Sandra is detached and aloof with a rather mercurial temperament. She's mistrustful of everyone and seems unwilling to form meaningful relationships with people other than her sister, Carolyn. That's not to say that she's antisocial, though, since she's able to speak and interact with people in a relatively normal way and even puts on a rather outgoing persona, but she's emotionally closed off. In general, wittiness, sarcasm and boastfulness are some of her trademarks.

Disadvantages

• Solitary: Other than her sister, Sandra has no friends or allies, so there's nobody for her to rely on if she gets into trouble.

• Hubris: Having soundly defeated many of the best fighters from around the globe without ever suffering a defeat since she was in her early teens, Sandra has definitely let her success get to her head. Convinced that she'd the greatest combatant alive, she'd prone to underestimating her adversaries, toying with them and taking completely unnecessary risks. Getting beaten would have a crushing impact on her ego.

Background

Born into one of the poorest regions of southeast Asia, Sandra's childhood was a constant struggle for survival. Her twin sister, Carolyn, was her only friend and the only one that she could depend on after they lost their parents at the age of six. Sandra's father was shot to death while working for one of the local warlords, and her mother committed suicide only a few months later, abandoning her and Carolyn and most likely spawning the severe trust issues which would follow her throughout life.

Fighting wasn't something that she got into by choice, it just came naturally while living on the streets and having to defend herself and her sister. She just happened to pick it up extremely quickly, and soon enough it became a passion, then an obsession. Having always looked up to Sandra, Carolyn also followed in her sister's footsteps, discovering that she had the same innate talent for fighting.

After a few years, they'd earned something of a reputation and received an offer from a martial arts master in a nearby village to become his pupils. The offer included beds, regular meals and an actual roof of their own for them to sleep under, in exchange for just helping out with chores and taking their training seriously, so the girls were happy to accept, even in spite of Sandra's initial skepticism. Master Tse turned out to be a kind and wonderful man, however, eventually gaining even Sandra's trust and becoming almost like an adoptive father to the two girls. Their life turned around at that point, and the next few years were good. Not content with only teaching them martial arts, Tse gave them a more traditional education as well on top of taking them all around the region so that they may study other styles under the most proficient senseis in each.

It all seemed too perfect until one day when the girls returned home to find their master dead, having been beaten to death. Sandra learned from neighbors and villagers that a gang formed from several of master Tse's former student's that he'd disowned years ago were responsible. She vowed to avenge her master by killing every last one of them. Carolyn begged and pleaded with Sandra not to, trying to convince her that it would make her no better than them, but the rage burning in her heart could only be satiated with blood.

Knowing that Tse himself would surely never condone her actions, it was at that moment that Sandra came up with the alias of Lady Shiva, transforming herself into an avatar of destruction and death. She found the ones responsible and fulfilled her vow, even slaying some of them in public. The region had almost no law enforcement to speak of, so Sandra wasn't arrested - she was grabbed by member of the League of Shadows who'd been observing her and Carolyn for some time. Apparently, watching her murder several young men in cold blood piqued their interest even further.

The league didn't give them much of a choice. Even though it was never explicitly stated, it was easy enough for the girls to read between the lines and figure out that they'd be killed if they refused the invitation to join. Sandra took to it much better than Carolyn who was miserable. They were supposed to be bound to the League for life, but an unexpected stroke of luck came a few years later when the organization was suddenly torn apart, essentially restoring their freedom.

Rumors had it that a lone man had somehow brought the League of Shadows down singlehandedly, so Sandra's next obsession immediately became finding him. She bore no ill will towards him - quite the opposite, in fact - she simply wanted to measure herself against the best, having been unable to find a decent challenge in a long time. Her search led her halfway across the world to Gotham City, which was conveniently held countless job opportunities for somebody with Lady Shiva's skill set. Within only three months, she'd already built a reputation in the city's underground circles as an extremely deadly and efficient assassin, all the while still trying to find the mysterious warrior that she'd come searching for.
