King's Cross Station is considered one of the main train stations to serve London, England. The ride on the Hogwarts Express starts from King's Cross railway station platform 9¾, which is invisible to Muggle eyes and is reached by walking through the barrier between platforms 9 and 10. The train leaves Platform 9¾ without fail on 1 September at 11 o'clock in the morning, arriving at Hogsmeade Station in the early evening. Most students take the train back to King's Cross Station to go home for the Christmas and Easter holidays. It also makes the run back again to London at the end of term in June.

It also serves as a major intercity and commuter rail hub for Muggles going to North London or Yorkshire and the North East and Scotland. Platform 7½ offers a long-distance train, similar to the Muggle Orient Express off to wizard-only villages in continental Europe while other concealed platforms may be opened on an as-required-basis, for instance for large, one-off events such as concerts.
