A Little Deeper
Personality: Molded by a life of constant battles and bullying, Drusilla long ago shed any meek tendencies she might have had and instead grew to be the strong willed, tough skinned, quick witted, and focused woman she is today. Her mind is quick and agile, though not always entirely linear, and she is insanely inquisitive with an insatiable hunger for knowledge. She can at times become mired in her own research and inquiries as she tends to prefer texts over people, however, she is never too busy to assist anyone else with their own quests and will go out of her way to see to it that they find whatever it is they seek provided they are genuine in their interest/intent. She is typically neat and organized, with a love of books that borders on scary and in social situations she has a tendency to ramble on when subjects of keen interest are brought up as well as throw out random facts. With regard to students: Dru can come off as stern and even harsh to the first time or infrequent visitor as she likes for everyone to adhere to the rules, but to those who spend any amount of time in the library and show respect for the space as well as the texts she is extremely helpful and has a bright and easy smile. Anyone who attempts to damage a text (spelled to be impervious to damage or not, whether it belongs to the library or not) will end up on her bad side. She also has the protective instincts of a she-wolf and simply cannot tolerate bullies. History: Drusilla was born in 1977, to a loving wizard couple. She had a fairly bright and engaging childhood as her parents seemed to recognize her inquisitive nature early on and encouraged it wholeheartedly. This was especially true of her father, who would often take her with him and his brother on some of their shorter jaunts and never minded teaching her about whatever species he was handling or researching that day. His quirky mannerisms and exceptional patience made learning from him easy and fun, and with all the time they spent together, they developed a fairly close bond. Unfortunately, when Drusilla was nearly ten years old, her father, who had years ago had the misfortune to be bitten by a werewolf while he was out tracking some rare creature or other with her uncle, missed a dose on his wolfsbane and ended up attacking her mother in a frenzy one night. Drusilla was not there to see it thankfully, but as a result her father was captured and sent to St. Mungos for “treatment”. What that meant exactly, Drusilla never learned, but it felt as though her world had been turned upside down. In her mind, her father would never have hurt them, but the evidence was clear when her mother proved to be infected with lycanthropy. Her mother tried her best to continue on and give her daughter a normal life but the one person who would have been able to help her cope with the changes was the very person who had caused them. In the end, her mother just could not adjust and less than a year later she ended up taking her own life. Her father would follow shortly after, they suspect he died of a broken heart considering he had been perfectly healthy outside of his infection. Suddenly alone, Drusilla was shipped off the the States to live with her aunt Sydney who had a stable home but no children of her own. Because of her relocation, Dru ended up attending the Salem Witches' Institute where she was often teased and picked on. Being small, rather bony, bookish, and awkward, made her a prime target for the American students. Her family was relatively unknown to the American wizarding community, her aunt having only moved there recently with her husband (a muggle actor), and that seemed to only add fuel for the other kids. For the first year or two she silently endured, taking the embarrassment and keeping her head down. She got through by pouring all her energy into her studies, pushing herself to the top of her class, and feeding her natural curiosity and appetite for learning. Books became her best friends and filled the place of people in her life. In her third year she would meet her mentor, Thaddeus C. Fillmore--the then librarian, and he would point her in the right direction, feeding her desire to know more and more and tutoring her in both dueling and charms. With the help of her mentor, Drusilla managed to survive Salem. She eventually learned to stand up for herself and fight back—teaching a few choice lessons to certain individuals—and even made a few new friends along the way. She graduated near the top of her class, having done well in both her OWLs and NEWTs, and went to work for the American Department of Magic, in the Office of Muggle Relations. She had wanted to be an auror like her grandparents had been, and had even qualified for training, but for some reason she ended up taking the desk job instead. Still, she worked quite happily there, in the Department of Magic, learning all manner of obscure things in her spare time until 2002, when she would answer a call from her former mentor and take over his position at the Salem Witches' Institute. A desire to return home is what brought her back to the UK but she needed a job so she applied for a position at Hogwarts. |
