A Little Deeper

When Cyr first came to JWA he was a backward boy from a backward place, his clothing archaic and his speech filled with thees and thous and any number of old-fashioned words and phrases. In a community that was built on tradition and discipline, Cyr was a mischievous child who while good-natured, never stopped questioning and balked against the rigid code of conduct expected of children. Though the community invariably declined to send their children to outside schools, after much deliberation, it was decided that Cyrus would be sent to the JWA due to his nature.

Over the years in school he has assimilated with surprising speed and now is indistinguishable from almost any other student. Occasionally something will slip that belies his past but for the most part he's a modern, fun-loving guy who never has a harsh word for anyone. He's a whiz at herbology, kind of a family legacy, and is never found without his 'herbal remedies' many of which are smoked, and have been the only reason so far he's ever gotten in trouble at school.

Family

fathers side

Erdrick Wildes -- Erdrick is a direct descendant of the founder of Bronwyn's Sight. The town, however, was founded by four families (three wizard, one muggle) so over the generations the bloodlines have all been pretty well mixed. Cyr has two aunts, two uncles, and several cousins from his father's side.

Anshelm Wildes - paternal uncle - Anshelm left Bronwyn's Sight out of bitterness over a woman and relocated to London where he has been living most unhappily. He acts as an agent for the village in helping them to sell their products to the outside world. When it was decided to send Cyrus to Hogswart, he was sent to live with Anshelm.

mothers side

Hestia Fordham Wildes -- Hestia is primarily descended from the Fordhams which was initially a muggle family but again, over the generations, these distinctions mean less and less.

Gloriana Greengrass Fordham -- great grandmother -- On very rare occasions a stranger would manage to find their way into Bronwyn's Sight and proving to be compatible with the community, be allowed to stay. Such was the case with Gloriana Greengrass, a squib that had been rejected by her family who found attitudes in Bronwyn's Sight much more conducive to a happy life. She settled in the village and married a local boy and assimilated smoothly into their society. She has of recent been the subject of much debate, however, as it is speculated that perhaps her blood is that which is responsible for Cyrus' behavioral issues.

Village of Bronwyn's Sight

A little over two hundred years ago, three prominent wizarding families founded a remote enclave on an island off the southern coast of England. Chief among these families were the Wildes who led the way and served as leaders in the small community after its establishment. Bronwyn Silverdane Wildes, wife of the founding patriarch, was a skilled but unstable diviner who received visions of the far future that confounded and frightened her with their violence. So compelling was her fear and the descriptiveness of her predictions so dire that drastic measures were taken. The Wildes, joined by the Silverdanes and the Redhands, relocated to a remote location to found the village of Bronwyn's Sight, certain that these steps were necessary to ensure the safety of their families over the generations. With them they took the descendants of a muggle family, the Fordhams, whose ancestors had protected members of the Wildes family during the witch hunts of the 17th century for while the Wildes were an old family, they were uncharacteristically tolerant of both muggles and those that might be called the lesser blooded.

At first Bronwyn's Sight simply relied on their geographical isolation but as the world changed and developed they began to set charms around the edges of the island to confound and misdirect any who might come near it. Over the generations few left and fewer still came in until the four families -- three wizard, one muggle -- became so genetically entangled so as to be nearly indistinguishable. The People of Bronwyn's Sight, whether wizard, muggle, or squib, are all treated with equal dignity and all have a place in the community. Any outsider entering the village feels as if they're stepping back in time as the place has been so insular that their dress and mode of speech is anachronistic to put it mildly. Because of the limited land and resources they had to sustain themselves over the centuries, their abilities in herbology is almost without equal as they have perfected the art of growing crops in inhospitable ground and have built several greenhouses that are scattered throughout the village in which they grow all manner of plants which in the past decades they have begun trading with the outside world. They are known for being able to grow difficult plants in greater quantities than most can manage.

In some ways Bronwyn's Sight is idyllic, free of any of the blood prejudices and internal strife that plagued the mainland over the years, and at least on the surface serene. Over the village's history a few strangers have turned up on the shore and some have stayed, enamored of the simpler life to be found there. But there is no such thing as paradise. Attitudes about a woman's place and social issues like homosexuality are antiquated and conformity is valued above all for the stability it brings. Those who are different find their way very difficult until they learn to fall in line or are ultimately banished. In order to keep the community tight knit, children are schooled on the island. The village does recognize the authority of the Ministry and complies with its laws but is still resistance to outside influences and what some would call progress. Recently there has been some debate as to whether Bronwyn's original vision, the one that set everything in motion, was heralding the rise of Voldemort or whether or not some yet to be revealed menace is still looming in the future.
