Square Numbers
« on: April 10, 2009, 05:43:19 PM »
I try to write quality posts.  If I make an observation, I try to ensure that it's a pertinent observation.  If I note a recent discovery or the results of a scientific study, I try to ensure that it's an interesting discovery or study.  If I compose a post for a game, I try to make that post clear, creative, thrilling.  If I argue a point, I try to do so in a calm and reasonable manner.  If I crack a joke, I try to make it funny.  If I tell a story, I try to make it worth listening to.  If I ask a question, I try to make sure that it's a question worth answering.

I try to write quality posts.

For better or for worse, though, I seem unable to write posts in quantity.  Some people seem to rack up the posts -- thousands a year sometimes.  I, in contrast, have accumulated about 575 posts in the last four years.  Though I'm not particularly concerned about this, I do think that my low volume excludes me from posting in "Round numbers" and similar threads.  My own numbers are always less than impressive; I feel as though posting in such threads would only hypocritically pad my total.  It would be like bragging that one was in a band only to then acknowledge that said band was Milli Vanilli.

However, I understand how reaching a certain number of posts can be satisfying, and so for your enjoyment I'd like to offer this thread -- one devoted to square numbers.  A square number, of course, is the product of a number multiplied by itself.  1 is a square number because 1 ◊ 1 = 1.  4 is a square number because 2 ◊ 2 = 4.  9 is a square number because 3 ◊ 3 = 9.  If you've reached a square number of posts, congratulations!  I encourage you to post in this very thread. :-)

For convenience, here's a list of the first one hundred squares of natural numbers:
