Because I'm a complete novice with this system, could I get a brief walkthrough on Stats and Skills? What's the difference between Physical and Combat, for example as Stats? What's the difference between the Mental Stat, and the Mind Skill? Combat vs Fighting vs Weapon, etc.

Nope! The species roll is simply one to determine your character's species - it has no bearing on power, since everyone has the same number of points to spend on characteristics and skills.

Everyone does still need to roll for Power Level, however, which represents how much Ki energy you can harness and master. This roll can give you a Power Level ranging from 110 to 660. A low roll here might mean you have less Ki to spend than others, but your stats will otherwise not be any weaker.

Quote from: wander on April 16, 2021, 08:21:40 AMIt's been years since I read the books, so just getting to grips with the system again now I'm a smarter boy and know more mathhammer. Like how on average 3d6 yields 11 at a higher percentage, so to meet a Hard action of 18, you only need a stat + skill of 8+ to do something, which is pretty trivial when the average stat for the 4 stats is 10 (this formula is also a neat way to figure out if your character could feasibly use a Power on average too).

One of the latter rulebook has a new difficulty table, with TNs ranging up into a much higher range, so the basic table isn't the extent of challenge levels. That said, in the far future, we'll even blow past THAT table with enough Skill levels.

The Physical characteristic is your raw physical potential: anything that involves using your body that doesn't impact combat capabilities.

Combat is your raw prowess in martial capabilities.

Characteristics are stuck: they do not change, and merely represent raw, untrained, starting potential. After the game begins, Skills are the only way to improve (other than your Power Level, Power Up, Hits, and Defence).

As mentioned, Combat is raw fighting potential, whilst Fighting is your hand-to-hand training. Weapon is your training with a melee weapon, like a sword or power pole.

Colour me curious, if nothing else. I'll have a read of the Tl;DR and this is all assuming you need an extra hand, but I'd be willing to give it a crack.

I got a 12. Does that make me the most Human-ee human who ever human'd? Am I the doomed Yamcha of the group!?

That depends on how the dice fall. But humans have a higher ceiling in Universe 21. I just drafted up a few NPCs and... well one of them can even give our Saiyan here a severe run for her money by pure chance.

Malkavian

I would hope so! Okura isn't as combat single-minded as Goku, but she's both highly competitive AND still a full-blooded Saiyan, so she'll relish any opportunity to become stronger.

Character Concept

1.) Choose species - Humans, Nameccians, or Saiyans. To play as a Nameccian, you need to roll a 3 or less on 2d6; to play as a Saiyan, you need to roll a 2 on 2d6. - We got a 12, so are Peak Human-Man!

2.) Determine personality, what your most important value is, most valuable person, and how you feel about others. - I'm going to go with a Mystic style Martial-Artist, with a focus on 'maintaining the Balance'. It's just vague enough to potentially make a semi-interesting and flexible character, while setting him up to either be mildly-antagonistic to a straight up Protag.

3.) Decide how you became a warrior: self taught, mentored, battle team, etc. - I'll go with a good ol' fashioned Martial Artist trained at a Monastary

4.) Decide on Schticks: a special habit or personal affectation that has little or no actual effect, but provides a hook to hang other personality traits on. Okura's Schticks are on the sheet I provided. - This Character is going to be from a fairly reclusive background, so let's make him a bit of a 'dense' character, at least in terms of normal social ideas: Silly things like mispronounce names, completely blunder with concepts like money, and probably be overly generous with people until they do something to make him realise they are a threat. He'll shake hands with the Bank robber until someone asks him to stop that guy sorta obliviousness

5.) Decide on a name – Since I'm a sucker for obscure stuff, lets call him Sha, name him after one of the other disciples from Journey to the West

6.) Spend 40 points between your four Characteristics. A fit, non-augmented human usually has values ranging around 5 to 7. You can work out the Derived Characteristics from there (Defence = 5 x Physical; Hits = 10 x Physical).

Physical: 12 | Combat: 14 | Mental: 9 | Move: 5 |
Defence: 60 | Hits : 120

7.) Spent 50 points among Skills. You don't need to spend points on each skill.

Fighting: 25 [ 11 + Combat 14]
Evasion: 20 [ 6 + Combat 14]
Weapon: 14 [0 + Combat 14]
Power: 25 [11 + Combat 14]
Body: 23 [ 11 + Physical 12]
Mind: 20 [ 11 + Mental 9]

8.) Create special Fighting Techniques! To do this, describe the Fighting Technique, determine it's damage bonus (how many bonus dice you get to roll for damage when you use it), and then it's Skill cost (a penalty equal to the number of bonus dice you gained for damage). So if you make a special move that gives +5 damage dice, the penalty to use it is -5. Finally, name the Technique.

I'll borrow from God of Highschool, and aim for a 'Rekkaken' system later on; Big Combo Moves sorta like Daewi Han from the series. For now, we'll go with a Water-Theme

  • Riverbank Fist - A Simple Punch that infuses Ki to make a blow to the user's spirit. [+3 Extra Dice/-3 Skill Cost]
  • Waterfall Flurry - A quick Combo of Blows to the weakpoints of an opponent, attempting to knock them off balance. [+2 Extra Dice/-3 Skill Cost]
  • Ocean Crasher - A Slower, more Powerful Axe-kick designed to crash an opponent's head into the dirt! [+5 Extra Dice/-5 Skill Cost]
  • Whirlpool Thrust - The Slowest, and most dangerous attack. It is a three-hit Combo that attempts to first stun a target, then knock them off balance, and finally a kick that is meant to knock them flying. [+8 Extra Dice/-8 Skill Cost]

9.) Determine Power Level. To do this, roll 2d6 - the first die roll represents the 100s value, and the second is the 10s value. So a roll of 3 and 4 would give you Power Level 340. - I accidentally rolled twice because I misread the description, thinking it was 2d6 for the 100s, then 2d6 for the 10s. Still, I'll take the first roll which puts me at...260. This is even sadder when I look at the second Roll, but C'est la vie!

10.) Determine Power Up. This is how quickly you can access the energy represented by your Power Level. To work this value out, you add your Mental and Physical attributes together and times them by 10. 12+9 210

Think your Power Up is 210: (9 + 12) x 10. :D

And don't fret! Increases to Skills, Defence, Hits, Power Up, and Power Level are all paid for in 10 point jumps, so you'll advance quite quickly.

I fat fingered the extra zero.

It's fine. I'll use my human brain to win the day. Just gotta grab the tail  ;)

Edit: I actually have no idea how I did that math so wrong. God bless my not-so-monkey brain.

Lovely character Pink. Love the nods to Wukong.

I'm a sucker for bad references

Don't grab the tail! :-X

Honestly, I imagine her reaction to tail grabs is like female Ranma's reaction to being boob grabbed. XD

Laughing Hyena

Oh dear. That made my own ideas on combat a lot more darker than intended.

Anyway got a few delinquents, some actual monsters and so forth. Anything that people are wanting out of the plot by chance?

More a butt grabber and fondler here...  8-)

I sent off a power level roll to le GM and got a 550, so my human bro is surprisingly powerful!  :D

Power Levels seem different in the game to the manga. For example, Goku at the start of the Raditz Saga gets officially listed as 334 w/weights, 416 without them, though when he fires his Kamehameha, he is ranked 924.
One could assume that perhaps the power level is instead listing the Power Up stat and when a move is listed, it lists the Energy put into that attack for it to line up some.

I know in the rpg Frieza book they have alien characters have the first d6 as thousands, then the second d6 as hundreds, so a roll of 3 & 4 would equal 3,400. Mainly as genero Namekian grunts officially had power levels of 1-3k each.

Malkavian

According to the DBZ rulebook, Goku is 300 at the start of the quieter episodes, 5,000 after training with King Kai, 8,000 when angered, and 21,000 with Triple Kaio-Ken.

So worth keeping in mind that anyone close to, or above, 300 is more powerful than starting Goku.

Note to self... must get casino scene worked in somewhere. Anywho the rolls seem rather lucky for you wander. Let's see what you make.

Pink Professional

To be fair, in my 6 rolls i got three 6s. Just a shame that I got my doubles 6s on the wrong roll  :P

Very based and booty-pilled, my fellow lord of culture.  ;D

So TIL that Dragon Ball and DBZ will not be put on tv anymore in Spain anymore due to sexism and racism... :/

Just wait for the Slime to come to you, and punch it until it explodes.
