Interest Check [Call of Cthulhu: Modern]
« on: February 27, 2009, 05:04:49 PM »
Hey everyone.  So this is the third time I have tried but I thought I would try for a possible Call of Cthulhu game again.  This time I am jsut saying modern cause I realize I have some modern things sitting around and maybe it would work better for possible players.  So I am seeing if there is any interest, not sure how many players.  Probaly small but then..lets see who is interested first.

BRP 5.5 Edition.  Which one do you have?  They are roughly the same from 4th onwards.

I have 5.6 and the D20 version. I also did just buy Cthulhu tech.

I would have to look further to see if I have CoC modern.

I have always wanted to try CoC.  I don't have any of the rules and have never played that system before.

Same here.  The only true experience I have with it are a few stories, and the PS2? Game they came out with, from the point of view of the detective figuring out jacked up things, which was really cool.  Is this going to be more system oriented, or more free-play, and is there an online rule reference, like the D&D D20 type stuff?

It would be either freeform or system.  The system itself though is very rules light so it would pretty much be freeform except at certain points (combat for example).  If you go too Chaosium's website (www.chaosium.com), you can find a quick set of starter rules in the download section.

Also, my reasoning behind making it modern rather then 1890s/1920s (the usual periods I play in) is because I am sure E can think of some wonderfully perverse/awesome modern day characters.

Also, I will take suggestions as to what sort of group the players might be.  Right now I am thinking they are just all residents of modern day Arkham, Mass (or maybe Kingsport?).  But i do like suggestions including what sort of game everyone might be interested in.

I like the idea of a Stephen King style story where the characters unearth increasingly irrefutable evidence that something is terribly wrong with the world.  One of my favorite movies along those lines is They Live.  But something along the lines of discovering our world is actually run by (or at least heavily influenced by) supernatural baddies would be cool.

A little curious.  I don't have the rules or much experience with it, really.

Is the idea that everyone goes insane or gets killed off?  Or just gets sexually crazed somehow or other and things go downhill from there?  Etc. ;)

I might be interested in this as well, as i think some of my games are going to be running to a close in the next little while.  Do you have any idea as when you are aiming for this to get started?

As for the game, I think Arkham would be a good place to start the game, though who knows, we could inevitably end up traveling to Innsmouth or Kingsport, or both.  I also think, and this isjust my two cents, but it should kind'a be something like the board game, if you've ever play it. And what i mean by that, is usually the charactor from the board game have either experienced earie or crazy events in the last little while, and decide to investigate or get involved for whatever reason.  Sometimes it's personal, sometimes it isn't.  Depending on how things work out and what you have planned and so forth, i think i already have a rough idea for a charactor.

I would likely play a female researcher, in a discipline germane to the nature of the events/forces/entities being investigated.  She could be acting on her own, or on behalf of a larger organization (a corporation, university, government, etc.).

is there any place we can find a template for stats and such?

Also, on a side note, if you decided to go the way of a sexual game, did you have anything in particuler in mind for content?

Cosmo,

Nothing is set into stone yet as this is jsut an interest check at the moment.  Also, as I said the rules are on www.chaosium.com website.  I would also like it if the people involved do know the rules/the game as it makes it a bit easier on my end.  Saying that, the quick start rules tell you everything you need to know.

LOL

For some reason your reply reminded me of that scene from Animal House where the burned-out English professor offers some students cannabis.  One of them asks if he will go insane, and the professor replies, "There's a very real possibility..."

Are you still looking for players? I am not sure if I can get my hands on the books, but I don't think that it will be a problem.

Okay, this is on.  I am accepting 3 or 4 players..might even go as big as 5 but thats a big if.  Here is what I need from you...

1.) An idea who is in.  Character concepts are key in my decision.
2.)  For you to download the Byakhee character generator (I will post a link if you can't find it).  This will let you make your character and send me a copy.  It will also make updating character sheets quick and easy.
3.) Make sure you fill out the background info on the back sheet.
4.)  Character stats (Str, Con and so on..) are build with a 100 point system.  One point=one point in stat.
5.) The game is set in modern day Arkham/the Miskatonic valley.  If you need a brief description then send me a pm, or send me one if you wish to know a bit about the current present day state of the Miskatonic Valley.  I will use a few adventures from the book The Stars Are Right and possibly bits from other things.  If you have played/ran or read any of them, I am trusting you on the honor system.
6.)  An idea of your likes/dislikes/what you might want in the game.  Be warned, this will be Extreme.  Themes that MIGHT come up are many including: violence, sex, rape, drugs, rock and roll and many things.  It isn't to say that it might happen to your character but it will come up in certain cases!
