Hunter the Vigil. - Roll to Dodge | interest check/sign up?

You are Hunters. Vigilante outcasts who shine like candles against the devouring darkness. You are the pathetic stand of humanity against the monsters who prey upon you like cattle, but you are humanity's only hope. And you must prevail.

Concept: Underpowered heroes fighting the supernatural, bravery of the everyday dood/dudette in the face of overwhelming odds. Still loosely based on the world of darkness concept of hunters vs everything.

Central Plot ideas:
Vigilantism, being on the run, hunting and avenging despite all danger, trying to stay together as a group

Possible plot ideas:
Vampirism, slavery (ghouling) & mind control, violence and non-con by antagonists, non-con by players towards monsters may be a thing too...

Story ideas:
People have been going missing in apartment block 307. The local residents say that the authorities are covering it up. A group of neighbours offers the vigilantes some money and resources to look into the problem.
--> Possible vampire lair, cult ritual site, abuse victim imbued with extreme powers,

The local hospital has an absurdly high death rate. But the problem was brushed aside and the administration slapped with a fine over dirty equipment. You suspect that one of the doctors or staff might be working for *them*. You come up with a plan to get to the root of the problem and eradicate it for the sake of humanity.

I'm thinking more band of ragtag vigilantes on the run than organized conspiracy. My idea is that the power level and the insidious control that the badies have over "the man"/civilized society should prevent hunters from organizing and acquiring too much power themselves.

Also I'm going with the Roll to Dodge system for scalability and potentially having more people in a high mortality game. You can still get pretty indepth giving characters perks and achievements without tripping over rules...

Ive always wanted to play in a world of darkness, it has been a long while since ive been on the boards and this time around, I intend to be limited and picky about the games I am in as I had a habit of overloading myself out of games and the like. Which I regret to this day. But this is a go ahead for me! I love the idea. Doing a Hunter game with a light system like this feels akin to a easy and good introduction to the play style behind a world of darkness, irregardless of whether or not this will be true to the setting or your own interpretation. In the end, this will be good practice to role playing in a horror system and I expect to be paste by the end of my characters life span . Edit: Let me know how you feel about things other then vampires. I just felt id embrace a broader spectrum then just vampires being what tips my guy off that the night is filled with dangers. IE, his past mainly dealt with spirits before

Background & description: Darius grew up poor in a middle class neighborhood. His father worked multiple jobs and his mother was legally handicapped. Both having decided to home school Jake from an early age, to keep him away from the drugs and danger of the worse parts of the city. Unfortunately, this left Darius alone most of the time, taking care of his sickly mother and few kids wanted to hang out with the poor kid with a mommy complex. With few friends and a lot of restrictions on his activities, he had a lot of time to hit the books and study hard. Which he did, looking at forensic shows as inspiration towards a life of solving crime. At the age of 12, was his first experience with the unexplained. Though, he would not know at the time, or since, what really lurked in the shadows. And had always reasoned, until more recent events, this experience as a child was just that of a child's imagination: It started with his mother talking to herself. Strange things being muttered, as if she was asking some one. Or 'Something' to leave. As the occurrences grew, so to did odd things around the house. A misplaced set of keys here, a falling plate there. Eventually, the young man was able to make out the appearance of shadowy figures within their home. And as the figures manifested, so to did his mothers mania over the ordeal. She knew at this point, Jake can see them to. She told Jake a wild tale. An old friend who blamed her over the loss of a lover,  whom practiced voodoo as well as the tarot for fun. the boy's mom swore up and down, her friend cursed her. This same thing happened when Jake was a baby, driving his father to almost send his mother to the bin. But it did eventually stop, until these moments years later. In fact, this time it was much worse! They threatened to hurt Darius, they threatened the boy in his dreams with sharp smiles and child like laughter. The poked and poked at his mothers sanity, until she almost found herself driving a pen into her own sons eye, stopping herself barely. Not to mention, just in time for her husband to bare witness. With these 'episodes' of hers resurfacing, Mr.Strode sent his wife to the bin just like he threatened all those years ago. And unfortunately, despite her cry's for support Darius could only pretend it was not real. Afraid of what his father would do.... She... She eventually took her own life. Having pretended to swallow some of her meds for a few weeks, saving enough over time to overdose herself.  Insisting until the very end she was tormented by things in the shadows, with piercing white eyes.

Years later, Darius became a cop. Worked his way through the force as well as college to become a Homicide Detective, specializing as a DNA analysts from his days back in the lab. What happened to his mother still haunted him and, to this day he feels watched by those figures still from time to time. Not as if his past demons were what were haunting him, no. Being out on the street as a detective, even if your not a beat cop you do see things. Strange things... As a cop your expected to turn a blind eye, fudge your report about things such as shadow figures in the abandoned crack house's, children with pitch black eyes, or people being mauled by strange were beasts or unseen figures. But unlike most other rare few cops who do actually see the full extent of what horrors do lurk out there, Darius did not turn a blind eye. After a particular incident where he witnessed a young girl being drained of her blood in a dark alley by an overzealous thinblood, he has dedicated himself in his free time to hunt down the unexplained. Not to capture it on film or to prove it exists; But to kill and or exorcise what goes bump in the night. Because it is far better to exterminate them, then to ever allow these shocking truths become public.... It seems his mother was right, she was not crazy. Her loss a tragedy that at the very least, made it an easy pill for Darius to swallow: Crazy shit exists and someone has to deal with it. Why not him?

TLDR: Homicide detective turned hunter for the sake of redeeming himself (Letting his mom go quietly into the night as a crazy person.) He feels it is his responsibility to help protect people from what they don't know or understand. Personality put simply, he is a cynic, apathetic towards crime but sympathetic towards the plight of those who are mocked or find public disbelieve in their wild tales. (Particularly if their story's about creepy crawly's are true.)

Skills: Perception (The ability to notice things most would often overlook. This may extend to a minor degree of supernatural sensitivity.) and Sense Motive (The ability to sense, determine or distinguish a persons motives, intentions or when they are lying/withholding information.). I decided on these two rpg staples as they are not only useful, but integral to the investigation portion of any story line.
Hobbies: DNA Analysis (Explains it'self.) Boxing (Ability to face off in hand to hand combat using Boxing.) Weapon proficiency:Pistols. (Proficient with the use in small hand based fire arms.)
Starting gear: Maglight (A flashlight, with heft! lol.) A mini Ultraviolet flashlight , Colt 45 Revolver-5 round cylinder (His personal firearm, if on duty he uses a standard issue weapon but he chooses to take the revolver on his nightly escapades as he stole it and it's ammo from evidence lock up.) 21 45 caliber rounds.
