Story premise
This story is set in the future, primarily America. It tells the brutal and traumatic story of mutants who are no longer desired in the society. After several deadly incidents with mutant children, the first were sent to an Island, forced to live out their lives under the most horrific circumstances. No light. No water. Primitive and simple. But they endured, since every month it became a ritual to deliver the newborn mutant children to the Island. Now, forty years later, the Island had become the very thing the world was fearing.

An uncontrollable society with powers no one could foresee. It had even become a business to send the newborn babies away – out which the SMU had been established. The Special Mutant Unit. Specialists who were running the tests to make out the genes of mutanism, created by the government itself.

Backstory

2021
The first year in which a mutant was born and detected by the newest technology. A small baby girl, gifted with the arts of magical crafting… also labelled by the public as a Witch – while she herself preferred to be called a Druid. She was being watched by society, looked upon as if she was god. She was able to create anything, fire, water, wind and even move the earth. But soon as she was not the only one. More and more babies were being labelled as gifted or even… cursed.

2031
The first incident with a mutant child. A vampire boy (the term vampire had simply been given to him by the public as he was dangerously close to that awful supernatural creature called Dracula) had lost control of his thirst and killed his mother. What followed were investigations after investigations, families with their mutant children were being pressured to alarm the police if their child was losing control. Mutants were no longer looked upon as blessings for the country, but rather as the downfall of the States.

2032
More issues occur with mutant children. Government sits together for the first time to find a solution.

2034
After a city burnt down after a druid lost control, it was decided to send those children to an Island in the Atlantic Ocean. Despite a few who protested against that decision, it was the common belief that the country was no longer safe. This is the year where the term Island of Monsters first appeared in a newspaper article.

2035
Safety Act #1 – All children must be tested once they are born. If their genes are in any form singular, they must be taken away from the American people.
Safety Act #2 – If a child is under suspicion of being a mutant, several other tests have to be run.
Safety Act #3 – Mutant children will be delivered to the Island on the first Monday every month by a special unit.

2036
Safety Act #4 – Creation of the Safety Mutant Unit (SMU)
Safety Act #5 – Development of a serum which blocks the broken genes, therefore taking away the mutanism from children. Consequence was the immediate death.

2038
Safety Act #6 – Protecting mutant children or hiding them from the test is considered as illegal.
Safety Act #7 – Constant surveillance of the Island. Stationing of secret weapons in the Atlantic Ocean.
Safety Act #8 – Legal tests on mutant test objects

2046
Safety Act #9 – Legal mutant slavery established

Safety Act #10 – Legal mutant slavery tightened: only SMU members allowed to keep mutant slaves

First time the SMU find foreign mutants in Europe and Asia, taking some of them hostage. Some are violently killed. Other countries accept the SMU’s help.

Mutant’s abilities and their origins

Some people possess a special gene that somehow opens a person up to the energies residing in the very core of the planet which in turn causes a mutation that often results in extraordinary power. How receptive this gene is and how much of a mutation it forces varies from person to person. Some are very sudden and extreme whilst others are more subtle and prolonged and a mutation can have both beneficial, as well as devastating results. Many mutants, as they are collectively branded, walk away with new abilities, but an equal number ends up with terrible side effects that can even be harmful to others.
Given that the mutations are brought forth by earthly energies it perhaps comes as no surprise that the resulting abilities can always be traced back to nature itself. Some acquire the power to harness the one or even several of the elements, whilst others channel animalistic spirits. There have even been cases of expanded awareness to the point of connecting one mind with another, or the ability to anywhere with but a thought.

THE ISLAND
The Island has become the very thing the civilization was fearing. It is the place for those the SMU are considering as highly dangerous or for former mutant slaves – the SMU’s test objects. Despite their abandonment, the mutants have established their own society and life. What was supposed to teach mutants their place has turned out to be the exact opposite: The Island has become their home, their paradise. Also, Eden how the mutants like to put it…


Main building


Upon Ava’s arrival on the Island, she had made it upon herself to create a house for herself at first. With her gifted powers, it was an easy task to create a big building out of the soil of the Island. It was meant for the first mutants as she had not expected for more to come. So, she decided to create something for everyone, a place where everyone could decide how things would be handled in the future. One could say that it has become some sort of government building for the mutants, even though it is much more than that. It is a place to feel home, to feel safe after what the SMU has done to the new mutant babies. Now, in present day, it is a mixture of Ava’s home and her main hall to rule over the Island. She has established an inner circle to advise her and to be by her side – those also find a home in the main building. Her right-hand woman – Jiang Hai – also has a secure place at her roundtable, advising her since she was able to control her powers.
The main building therefore serves as the central hall to come to if the mutants have any problems, for the Queen always has an open ear for her people. She has even built a small throne for herself in the main hall, along with a long table for her must trusted advisors. The rooms in the rest of the building are some common rooms or private chambers. Even though it looks rusty and old-fashioned, there is a comfy atmosphere inside and due to Ava’s ability of creating electricity, the main building never has to be completely in the dark.


Shelter and Kindergarten


After the first newborn mutants have been brought to the Island, some of the older ones have more or less ‘volunteered’. The SMU has threatened them to hurt their families if they did not obey their orders. The babies should be raised and taught to control their powers because the non-mutants were unable to do that by themselves. In addition, the families of the babies shall be comforted by the thought of their children being in well-trained hands… The delivery of the small babies happens in some sort of ceremony. Usually five or six mutants loyal to Ava await the ship which brings a member of the head council of the SMU, employees and over three dozen of warriors. The ceremony is obligatory, a punishment would await if the mutants ever missed the date.
That was when the Shelter for newborns to three years and the Kindergarten for children to seven years was built. In the small and comfy rooms of the establishment at the coast of the Island, these children are being cared for before giving them up for education. Older mutants have taken it upon themselves to show the newborns a better life, in freedom and liberty… at least on the Island. Ava herself has raised several children and has cared for some druids especially.


School and Education


After Kindergarten, the children are sent to school. Once there, they can expect a mixed education: one half is focused on their common knowledge about history, mathematics and literature while the other one aims to teach them to control their powers. The children’s timetables leave enough freedom to choose their lessons by themselves, though some lessons are obligatory.


Life after School
The Island or - Eden - provides the necessary space and fertile land to harvest, especially with the help of the druid’s helping hands. It is simple work but still better than doing nothing other than to curse the non-mutants for abandoning them. Apart from working on the fields, working as fishermen or women, there is the possibility to join Ava in the main building. Working in her name, gaining her trust to work for the most influential mutant on the island. People to teach or to take certain mutants into their custody to take care of are always needed. In general, their lives are simple and they have struggled long enough to build up their society. But the simplicity is not enough, not by far. They have a special training center for sporty activities and to manifest one’s power, which also serves as another common room next to the main building.

Eden as a home
The inhabitants of the Island had chosen to call their new home Eden. It blossoms in the summer, the humid air and the endless hours of sun cause the nature to show itself from the best side. It is hot during summer, sometimes even unbearable if it wasn’t for the druids to control the weather from time to time. The weather in winter is cold, so that not many animals can survive the harsh climate. Despite the hard winter, the soil is incredibly fertile for crops.

After having been betrayed, Ava had been chosen as the supreme leader of Eden. One might think that she holds the absolute power in her hands, like some sort of dictatorship. It is not quite like that – though she could certainly do as she likes. Her empathy and kind nature make her a general good choice for sitting on top of everything, controlling everything that is going on under her. But a lot of people can influence her, telling her not to turn her rule into a monarchy or a dictatorship and usually, she listens to them. The inhabitants of Eden can always express their thoughts and doubts of her rule, she appreciates their input, even though it is straining to listen to every complaint. But was it really a good choice to put someone who is allergic to lies at the very top..?

The Vampire’s numbers have decreased since their revolt and are now under constant surveillance by the queen. Otherwise, every creature, no matter how bad their genes, is looked upon like the treasure he or she is. They treat each other with kindness, they want to pull the very best out of every mutant child or grown-up. Their powers are what connects them as a whole, no matter how different everyone might be. And the one common enemy: the SMU.

The Special Mutant Unit


THE SUBMARINE

Apart from their offices and headquarters on the mainland, the SMU has created a secret underwater base near the Island. Neither the public nor the mutants on the Island have the knowledge of this base. It was created to be closer to them, to keep them under control. The SMU fears that the monsters find a way to escape from the Island, that is why the beaches and the waters around it are under constant surveillance.
Work in the base is highly confidential. Those who are assigned to the submarine have to swear to be discreet – one wrong step and you are fired with serious consequences. Next to keeping an eye on the Island, the employees hold their most precious prisoners in tanks underwater. Those mutants who are considered to be the most dangerous or most interesting are kept as prison slaves. The SMU uses them to run tests and understand their genes better – hence why mutant slavery was legalized for the SMU in 2047.
The technology is always the newest and most expensive, something the government gladly provides. The newborns which are delivered onto the Island usually have a tracer in their veins, something which Ava had discovered ten years ago already. But the mutants refrain from removing them, as they fear what happens if they do. And indeed, if the tracer is removed by force, it explodes and kills the mutant in the process.


THE HEAD COUNCIL
General:
The Head Council has direct contact to the White House, as most of its employees answer to the President. Their number is limited to five with one essential leader. They have the power to decide what happens on the Island, without having to ask the White House for permission first. By having received immunity in 2038, the SMU has become one of the essential establishments in the US. Each member of the Head Council usually keeps a mutant slave to run tests or to investigate their nature.





MARINES AND WARRIORS
General:
Lead by five Generals, marines are the executive of the SMU. They patrol the Island with helicopters, ships and underground technology. Their work is to secure the safety of the shore, making sure that every mutant stays on the Island. Their weapons are specialized to hurt and even kill disobedient subjects, their armor can withstand far more than a simple vampire bite. They are bound to obey and follow orders, but are however cherished in their countries as heroes.






EMPLOYEES
General:
At the very end, there are the simple employees who work in the offices of the SMU. Their task is to keep track of the finances, visitors and the newspaper. They analyze the behavior of the mutants on the Island and write essays for the public. Part of the employees are also doctors, professors and newbies in the company. Just because they usually never visit the Island does not mean they are useless – but in fact necessary for the Unit to survive.

Character Creation
This is not an x-men remake! The mutants are not able to create everything, there are limits to which extent they can use their powers. As far as your character creation, feel free to use your fantasy! You may include anything that comes to your mind, as long as it is not an all-powerful god. As it is said above, every ability comes with a price. To set an example, if you choose to make your character a shapeshifter, it has to be weakened by something – something like copper or silver. Or the shapeshifting is a torture to watch. You can also relate to the GM’s character below.
There are also common titles for mutants in the American society. Witches, vampires, nymphs or mind-readers… They tend to make it easy for themselves to throw them into the same pot. You can also name that ‘title’ given by society in your character profile.

Personality and Backstory:

Ava is the first mutant child that has ever been discovered in the US until 2021. Her birth has been a sensation in the world and from being a baby, she was the star of American TV. With all of her privacy gone forever, she began to discover her true powers with six. Water suddenly did to her bidding, fire did not feel hot anymore. With only a blink of her eye, she could even make it stop raining. People were stunned at her abilities, scared and heavily interest in what might become of little Ms. Morales. The newspapers began calling her A Witch and at first, the girl accepted that name.

But she was not set to be alone in the world. Nobody was even able to explain what was going or why it was happening but more and more mutants were being brought into the world, especially America. No one ever quite the same as the last one. As Ava turned 10, there were children who were entitled Vampires, Mind-Readers, Nymphs… but no one was quite as powerful as she was. In the same year, a seven-year-old vampire killed his own mother as a consequence to having been denied to drink blood since he was born. And suddenly, her face began to change in the public.

She was no longer the desired girl every parent wished for. Mutants, those were beasts and damned to kill everyone around them. Her name was pulled through the dirt, Who could ever say what she might be able to do? She could cause an earthquake and get away with it!, one newspaper article once wrote. So, slowly, she felt herself uncomfortable to even walk out of her parent’s house and stayed home, oppressing her gifts more and more. The title Witch did not seem appropriate any longer, so she changed it herself to Druid. It was only three years later that her heart would truly be broken.

After a five-year-old druid burned an entire city to the ground, the government decided that it was time to do something about the ‘mutant problem’. Ava was torn apart from her family, forcefully taken away with handcuffs that should prevent her to use the earth’s power. The girl only remembered how the tears ran down her cheeks and that she was screaming for her mother to help her. Unfortunately, even her mother had begun to fear her daughter and did nothing to prevent the inevitable. The star had turned into the embodiment of the Monsters… the monsters that would bring down the entire system and with it, democracy.

They had abandoned her and other one hundred mutant children to an Island in the Atlantic Ocean. Set on the shores, she had watched how the massive ships disappeared in the horizon, leaving them with no help or whatsoever. Forced to live and die away from civilization.

But Ava’s strong will and the help of the other mutants had managed to create their own home on the Island. Despite of only being 13, she did her best to make their lives as comfortable as possible, also discovering what she was truly able to do with her powers. Nymphs, the very few Druids, Vampires and Shapeshifters worked together hand in hand to form their own personal land. The only disruption was a ship that appeared every month in a horizon, delivering new babies to add to their small society. Without much fight, the children accepted their fate and began to care for the babies, raising them into strong, powerful mutants.

Everything seemed to work out, everyone grew up without knowing what was going on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. But growing steadily on a limited Island only meant one thing: conflict. In 2057, the vampires challenged the druids, urging them to fight for the lead on the Island. Having been lied to for over years by the vampires, Ava had felt her rage slowly exploding in her veins. So she released a true bomb on the Island itself, erasing over seventy percent of the population on it. Having earned fear and respect, she was chosen as the leader of the mutant society. Even crowned Queen in 2058.

Since then, an era of peace has returned to the Island with Ava sitting on top of it all. Even though one might argue that she did a mistake by dropping a bomb on the people, she was a rather benevolent Queen. Kind-hearted, gentle and usually very calm. But the one thing that drives her mad is the fact how the humans have treated her in the past… along with all the other mutants. And what she seeks more than her rule is revenge… Revenge on those who have abandoned her and labelled her as a monster.

Mutations:
Lincoln’s mutations allow for abilities revolving the displacement of matter and/or energy without traversing the space in between, more commonly referred to as Teleportation. These mutations occurred gradually over the course of years and seem to be ongoing. They did not manifest until his late childhood/early teens when he began experiencing dizzy spells as a result from bouts of disorientation which in turn were caused by minute distance teleportation.

With a name that litrally means sea and river respectively it was no wonder that Jiang grew up to be the woman she was. Born to a human family in the bustling city of Shanghai in the year 2041, as a small baby it wasn't immediately obvious that Jiang was a mutant but as she grew older her power became more and more obvious and on her eighth birthday the SMU were dispatched to retrieve her. Jiang was one of the first Asian mutants to be discovered. Her birthday had started off normally enough the young girl had gone out to play with her friends, back then it had been  harmless fun to cool down drinks and make snow days so they didn't  have to go to school. What Jiang  didn't know is that her friends had mentioned her cool power one time to often and some parent had reported her, Jiang was surround by an intense heat so hot it made her faint. When Jiang woke up the lovely face of Ava was gazing down at her.

Jiang took an instant liking to Ava and stuck to her side like glue, the older mutant even showed her how to truly use her power.  Jiang took Ava's side in the great battle between the druids and the vampires and since then has been her right hand upon the island. Despite being stuck on an island Jiang is a fun young woman and often helps Ava forget about her troubles. She would often drag the other woman off for adventures around the island.  Up until recently Jiang hasn't shown a lot of interest in boys or girls and has really had any romantic interest. Shes only just looking at others in a romantic way and doesn't know how to act towards people she is interested in.

Weaknesses: Benazir’s shapeshifting powers are limited to forms of people or mutants the person she touches lusts after, becoming irresistible to her target. When in a different form, she is nearly indistinguishable from the “real” thing, including taking on the powers and weaknesses of mutants.
Her succubus ability allows her to feed through the life energy contained in fluids ejaculated during her victim’s orgasm. If she takes too much, she can kill her partner. Her control over this power varies depending on how recently she’s fed.
Her shapeshifting abilities can be disrupted by focused sonic energy or particularly loud sounds. This can also cause her great pain.
Gender: Female but fluid depending on her current form.

Personality and Backstory: In many ways Benazir was a very fortunate mutant child. Her powers did not manifest right away and mandatory genetic testing didn’t become law until later in her young life. Since her powers didn’t appear in that time, there was no reason to suspect that she might be a mutant. She had a fairly normal life, just starting High School when everything changed. At the first dance of the year, she was dancing with a boy she’d known for a long time to a song by a popular teen idol. When they touched she felt strange, and even a little dizzy and the boy began acting strange getting a little handsy with her and suggesting they go out to the football field and make out under the bleachers. Normally, Benazir would never consider such a thing, but there was something inside her that wanted to go with him. Once under the bleachers, things got hot and heavy and elevated teen hormones took over. Benazir lost her virginity, and so did the boy.

Unfortunately, he also lost his life.

Witness reports stated that they had seen the boy leave with a girl who strongly resembled the teen idol Benazir and the boy were dancing to and a short time later, they heard Benazir screaming and she was found under the bleachers with the withered body of the boy. As they tried to help her, each person that touched her triggered her to shapechange into various pop stars, adult actresses and even a teacher at the school. She was in danger of being raped when the students affected were pulled away by other students and faculty chaperones. The police were called and when they took everyone’s statements, the SMU was called and Benazir was taken away. Later, her family was charged with harboring a mutant and sent to prison while Benazir was sent to the Island.

Even in the company of other mutants, it was difficult for Benazir since anytime her skin came into contact with another person she would shift into a duplicate of someone that person lusted after. It became even more problematic that if she did not feed regularly she would become ill and even violently try to take what she needed. There were several close calls with a few of the other students until she learned to control how much she took.

She also learned to control her shifting, getting to the point where she would only change when she allowed it to. She still could not control what form she took, but at least she wouldn’t shift every time she bumped into someone.

Benazir eventually finished school on the island and worked hard on integrating with the rest of the island population, eventually finding her way into managing the island’s resources and eventually becoming one of the Queen’s advisors. They had become friends, but that friendship became strained when Ava dropped the bomb on the island. Now she really only has contact with the Queen during council meetings or on other official occasions.

In her capacity as administrative manager, she is business like; firm but fair knowing that the lives of the island’s inhabitants are dependent on the proper management of their resources. She is bitter about the circumstances in which she came to the island as well as the way mutants are treated and wants to become an agent of change to free mutants from oppression and persecution. She hopes that this can be achieved through peaceful means, but she is also willing to do what it takes to end the suffering of mutants.

Outside of her duties, she is somewhat withdrawn but still quite sociable. She has had few romantic relationships other than simple physical pleasure, finding trust to be a difficult thing. Someone would truly have to show they love her for who she is on the inside.

I think OOC is important. Some players might not have Discord so I feel like important announcements and links to other threads should be posted in a place that is super easy for players wanting to join to find and peruse :)
