Perhaps you are all of the above, perhaps you are none. It matters not. Whoever you are, whatever you are, fate has dealt you a poor hand. You now languish in a dark dungeon, one deep underground, where the only light comes from flickering torches. You have no idea where you are or who holds you captive, for you were brought here hooded and in chains, the hood only removed when you were hurled into the cell. You have seen others come and go during your captivity, men, women, young, old, taken from the cell by black clad guards, never to be seen again. At some point they would surely come for you, take you away, to whatever heinous fate they had in store for you. Can you seize your chance to escape, or at least die as a free man or woman in the trying? Only time will tell...



Introduction

This is a Recruitment Thread for a group game using the Modiphus Conan 2d20 RPG rules. The game will be placed in the Extreme Category. Ongoing game themes will include (but are not limited to) sex, violence, torture, rape, slavery, and other non con situations, as the characters battle dark forces and unspeakable abominations. The game will be dark, the World is bleak. Character death or other ‘bad’ endings such as enslavement are possible. Influences include (but are not limited to) Game of Thrones, Spartacus (the Starz series), Gor, and Lovecraft.

In depth familiarity with the system is not required although if you don't have the core rules it's recommended that  you get the free quickstart available here to give you a basic familiarity with the rule set.

Characters

All characters will start off as prisoners, confined in an underground cell. There’s a fair degree of latitude as to how you came to be in the cell. Perhaps you were bought at a slave market, perhaps your village was raided, perhaps you were captured after a battle, perhaps something else altogether. Once you have a basic idea we’ll expand on it in PM. Note that at the start of the game you will have no idea where, specifically, you are or who is holding you captive. Characters will not start the game with any gear - they will be in shackles, wearing rags (or naked). 

All characters must be 18+ and human (no futas). Characters may be of any sexual orientation. Writer gender and character gender need not be the same.  Character images should be real pictures. I'll make allowances for realistic fantasy art but not magna, anime, etc.

There are no restrictions on characters' Homeland / Caste / Archetype etc, and players may use any published material to create a character. My preference is for characters who are at best morally corrupt / ambiguous. If you want to step over the line from morally corrupt to actual evil I’m OK with that provided it doesn’t involve PvP.

I will only allow one sorcerer / witch type character (magic on this world is rare, those who practice it viewed with suspicion if not open hostility).

I'll also allow one 'healslut' character (in this setting a healslut would not use magic to heal, they'd be a trained healer). I’d imagine that provided the characters do manage to gain their freedom they would keep the healslut as their slave.

All characters will be given proficiency in one common language (in addition to any languages obtained through normal character generation)

I am going to cap the group size at around four to five PC's. The game is not first come first served, I'll select the characters that I feel are going to be the best fit. Deadline for character submissions is Wednesday 10 July.

Game Pacing

Moderate. Ideally people wishing to participate should be able to post once / twice per week. I would anticipate posting GM updates twice per week at most (once midweek, once at the weekend). Shorter posts, answers to OOC questions, etc, will be more frequent (I can get online more or less daily, but only on phone during work hours, 0800-1800 GMT).

How much sexual activity is likely to occur or expected, if any?
Frequent, both consensual and non consensual. Nudity will also be commonplace. Where neccessary I'll create separate threads so the game doesn't get held up.
   
Whether tagging will be used or not.
Yes. Given the extreme nature of the game tagging will be required.

Crom! I am so in. I joined the original kickstarter for Modiphus Conan but didn't really get around to actually opening the books and learning the rules until fairly recently (so little time, so many games).
Here's an opening gambit, but I'm happy to change anything (I mean you nearly got a Zamorran dancing girl...).

Talents
Asgard (Homeland):          Winter Born - Born in a place of deep winter and intense cold, often spanning the entire year, you are accustomed to frigid climes. When in wintry environments, the number of successes required for any Survival test you attempt is reduced by 1. This can even reduce tests to a Difficulty of Simple (D0). However, you must achieve 1 additional level of success when attempting Survival tests in areas offering the Desert-born talent.
Warrior (Caste):             Sentry - You learned at a young age that the watchful eye subsists on little rest. So long as you have had a total of four hours of sleep within the last two days (either one four-hour stretch or multiple short rests), you suffer no penalties for sleep deprivation when making Observation tests.
Raider (Archetype):         No Mercy - When making a Melee attack, you may re-roll a number of damage dice equal to the total number of Melee talents (and ranks in those talents) you have acquired, if desired. You must accept the results of the re-rolls.
Wrathful (Nature):            Deft Blade - You wield a blade as if it were an extension of your arm. Whenever you make a melee attack, any Momentum spent or points added to Doom to add bonus d20s to the Melee test adds two dice instead of one, though the normal limit of three bonus d20s still applies.
Born to Kill (Education):        Born Wild - You can reduce the Difficulty of any Survival test to find food and shelter by one step, to a minimum of Simple (D0). Born Wild is factored into the difficulties of all Survival talents.

Description: A large, shaggy, bearded man with long blond hair, tall, lean, and muscular. His body bears scars of combat.

Personality: Wulfhere is proud, quick-tempered, and not above taking what he wants from whoever has what he wants. He respects strength and disdains weakness.

Backstory: Wulfhere is a warrior thane from a settlement in Southern Asgard. He once adhered to the warrior code of the Aesir, but his temper and his greed have often got the better of him. It did so early in his life, when he slew the son of a chief over an insult - the other young man thought his position meant no man would dare challenge him. However, Wulfhere's family could not afford the vast blood price for one of noble blood, and so Wulfhere was obliged to go on the run. He moved south, and found a living as part of raiding parties, often mongrels of a dozen lands, subsisting at the edges of civilisation and taking what they could at the point of a blade. He is used to living wild and keeping his position in a pack of other wolfish young men - his name means 'wolf man', and he lives up to that.

I play this game tabletop several times a week.  It's a really, really good system.  Kudos for starting this game.

Question though.  The game flows really well in tabletop but I worry how well things will go in an online game if we'll be using the system with dice, doom and momentum.  How would this work?

I would love to play the Zamoran dancing girl with a bit of wise woman blood.  I'd see her as a thief, seductress and healer which would put her right into the heal slut role or slut who heals.

@Humble Scribe, looks good. Just one observation, you have being bound / powerless as a character off. When the game opens your character will be locked in a cell and while he won’t be bound per se he will be restrained - he’ll have a shackle locked around his ankle with a chain attached to it which is in turn secured to a ring in the floor, so just want o be clear on that (his hands will not be bound).

@Lunar Sage, that’s a good question. I’ve been part of a few games using this system, always online (twice as a GM, three times as a player). Clearly any system works more smoothly face to face than it does online but I think the rules as written can be used.

Outwith action scenes players can interact as normal, as they would in any PbP. Each time I post I’d include a summary of the Momentum / Doom pool, e.g.

If people want to make a roll for anything (Observation, Thievery, etc) they can do so and update the Momentum / Doom pool with any dice added / subtracted when they post. I may occasionally make rolls while writing a post (e.g. I may make Observation rolls to see if each character notices something or not_ - in those cases I have a house rule that I don’t apply complications if I roll a 20.

I’d declare when an Action Scene starts. Action Scenes work much the same way, except people would also post their Actions. I’d encourage people to still put as much detail as they can into their posts  e.g.

Well, distinguishing between player and character offs is a bit moot. I was thinking about sexual turn-ons/offs rather than hard nos. The only hard nos are my personal ones. I mean, if Wulfhere ends up bound and at the mercy of some slinky dominatrix, personally I'll be absolutely fine with it, but I'm not imagining the character would enjoy it and people shouldn't be surprised if he gets annoyed and violent. I can amend the offs if it's going to cause confusion or problems. But obviously we start as prisoners in chains and that's fine.

Thank you for the clarification.  I'll see about working on a character sheet in the next day or so. 

I'm thinking a really big Mercenary guy from Asgard using the Mountain from GoT as a face claim.  Brawn 14 with Ancient Bloodline using a broadsword and shield.  -Really- big guy.

Shields are so useful in this game.  Like unbelievably useful.  In my opinion, if you're a non archer warrior type and you're using a weapon that's not strictly two handed, not using a shield (and not investing in the parry skill) is doing yourself a disservice.

This game is brutal.  There is really no healing magic.  You want to heal, you rest up during a carousing period.  Five wounds and you're dead.  No resurrections.  I like this aspect, myself.  Big thumbs up from me.

I presume you're talking about the Mountain prior to his encounter with Oberyn? Regardless, I'm totally fine with the idea of a Brawn 14 Mercenary but I already have one pitch for a warrior from Asgard. Two warriors isn't a problem for me but I would prefer if they were from different homelands (or one could be Vanir and one Aesir, which could add an interesting inter group dynamic...)

Description: A mix of the best qualities of Zamoran and Brythunian women Shaldara is lithe, well endowed and ravishingly beautiful.  She is tall for a woman at 5'8" with large, dark eyes that draw in the souls of men.  Her dark, gleaming hair flows down over her shoulders to the small of her back.  Shaldara's firm breasts stand proudly with perky, sensitive nipples and would be too large on a woman of shorter stature.  Womanly hips set off a narrow waist and trim belly.  Her flanks and ass are rounded and set off by the long, shapely thighs and calves of a dancer.  High up on her left hip Shaldara bears a small brand in the shape of a spider.

Personality: Shaldra is sensuous, devious and canny.  Submissive to strong men she uses her beauty, wits and seductive skills to satisfy her curiosity or to gain her desires through manipulation.  Shaldara deeply, even obsessively enjoys the company of men in all ways, the stronger, fiercer and more dominant the man the better.  She is willing attach herself to a powerful man and gain wealth and subtle power/influence from behind the throne or in the bedroom.

Backstory: Shaldara was born in Yezud to a Brythunia woman kidnapped by the priests of the Spider God to serve as a sacred dancer.  Her father is unknown as Shaldara was conceived in a ritual in the temple.  Bred as a dancer and courtesan Shaldara was taught the arts of dancing, seduction and persuasion.  She learned something of healing, herbs and potions from the women and priests of the temple.  Shaldara performed well in the temples, seducing and serving several priests until her current master was overthrown in a power struggle leaving her sent in chains to the slave market in Shadizar.

I try to take notes during the generation process to understand what the talents and such mean.

I have the books but I always use the online generator to create characters - I find it really easy to use and much faster than doing it manually.

That being the case, @Lunar Sage, no need to record step by step, I just need the finished sheet. If you can copy and paste your talents (including the description of what they do) that would be helpful though (if you use the generator you get the description at each step as you work through it)

@Vonandi, if there’s anything we can do to help you get your head around the system or any questions you have just say. Did you have any thoughts about a character concept?

@Helvorn, looks fine (you have age at 190 which I presume is a typo and should be 19?). Note in the absence of a specific Dancing Skill I’d use Acrobatics if a skill roll is required you might want to look at swapping some points about to boost your Acrobatics score (or increase your Agility). That’s just a suggestion though - up to you. Also, I’d try and stay near the back during combat!

I am completely NOT a combat character.  In general I strongly prefer to play rogues and such with the occasional transgression into something more aggressive.  I will stay in the back as I can see how deadly combat can be in this game!

I would like to take point out of Animal Handling, Command and Athletics and add them to Acrobatics if I could.  I would also look at taking a point from Willpower and adding it to Agility.  I'm not sure how much I can move things around.

Thank you for understanding, I'm familiar with other pen and paper RPGs so I do have a baseline idea of how this will work it's just the fine details that illude me.

I'd be glad to play a healslut, but lacking magic would some sort of huntress with experience in field dressing and an extensive knowledge of herbs and salves work?

Also tend to pick faceclaims that are somewhat unconventional, but I do not mind toning that down if it is an issue.

Cosmopolitan (Homeland):         
Your homeland has many visitors and people dwelling
within it, all with different customs and tongues. When
speaking with a non-player character that also has the
Cosmopolitan talent, it is assumed that you each possess
enough of each other’s languages in common that you
are considered fluent when speaking with one another.

Sentry (Caste):             
You learned at a young age that the watchful eye subsists
on little rest. So long as you have had a total of four hours of
sleep within the last two days (either one four-hour stretch
or multiple short rests), you suffer no penalties for sleep
deprivation when making Observation tests.

You are a subject in good standing to a lord or king. While
subject to their laws, the taxes you face are much less than

When making a Melee attack, you may re-roll a number

You must accept the results of the re-rolls.

Courageous (Nature):           
You may re-roll a single d20 on any Discipline test, though
the second result stands. For every point of Discipline Focus,

Description: Belan is a massive physical specimen of a man, standing at 6'11".  His arms are massive, defined and thicker than most men's thighs, his shoulders broad and his legs are as tree trunks, his entire form a litany of the blood of the bygone era of mighty Atlantis.  His black hair is kept short, matching his facial hair, which is well maintained for what one would expect from a Barbarian.

Personality: Belan is very intense when he feels strongly about something, but he can come off as stoic and reserved when he is indifferent.  On the battlefield he is absolutely merciless and does not hesitate to kill those who would not hesitate to kill him.  He is loyal to a tee once you have earned that loyalty.

Backstory: Born in Nemedia to a Barbarian tribe on the outskirts of civilization, Belan found that his family traveled frequently, and he got used to the nomadic life.  From a young age, his father ensured that he knew how to properly wield a blade.  When he was fifteen years old, his family was taken from him by a large raiding party.  His mother and father were killed and his sister and he were sold into slavery to seperate people.  Belan didn't know where his sister ended up, but he swore that he would someday find her.  He had been taken to the Red Pit, forced to labor in the quarry to mine the marble for his new masters.  Most didn't last a year, but he lasted two, becoming unbelievably strong and durable as he grew up.  One day, he managed to escape the pit with the help of a mercenary company who was there to rescue several of their own.  They allowed Belan to join their ranks and he travelled with them and fought many battles for the next 5 years until they ran afoul of a bigger army.  He was nearly killed, but he survived in the end, alone again.  He has been living in the wilds for the last two years, honing his skills and watching for any sign of his sister's wherabouts.  It was as though she vanished from the face of the world.  It's been nine years now, but he wasn't about to give up.

I do already have one strong pitch for a healslut. There'a a strong implication that the healslut(s) will end up enslaved by the other members of the party (currently LunarSage and Humble Scribe). If you all are comfortable with the idea of two PC's enslaving the other two I'm fine with it (note I plan to add one, possibly two NPC's as well, to make sure there's a balance of combat capable PC's but I'll confirm that once I pass the deadline for character submissions).
