RPG OVERVIEW: What is Star Odyssey?
Star Odyssey is an original-setting animé RPG that will be played using the flexible OVA: The Animé Roleplaying Game rules. The system revolves around the use of multiple d6s, and is simple to pick up and play. Star Odyssey was designed to accommodate and work with a multitude of different animé inspirations, characters, tropes, and other things. Although serious and dark at its core, there is plenty of room for comedic elements, cat-folks, mech warfare, magic-wielders, and similar.

In terms of setting, Star Odyssey focuses upon a war-torn galaxy that plays home to two powerful factions: the multi-cultural and multi-raced Union of Systems, and the militaristic and powerful Jurai Empire. For dozens of years, the two factions have been fighting across planets, with both sides utilising an assortment of mechs, magic, technology, warships, gunblades, and martial arts. Towards the present day, the Union has been beaten back to their home systems, which they've managed to protect against all invasion attempts by destroying key warp-gates and guarding the few remaining with overwhelming and focused military might.

The Jurai, possessed of warriors, continue their campaigns to finish off the Union, whilst certain key members of their administration and military focus on another, secret task: locating and capturing a number of women throughout the galaxy, each of which possesses special abilities that are, somehow, key to the Jurai victory in the war, and all wars that might follow.

There is a lot more information available for the setting, but I can detail that with interested parties as they apply.

GAME SPECIFICS: What am I planning/looking for?
Adult Content Disclaimer: As Star Odyssey can include a multitude of animé style creatures, tropes, and encounters, I've decided to make this game an Extreme one, to cover any-and-all scenes that might result from play.
Desired Player Number: 3-6.
Posting Rate: Frequent - multiple times a week, at least. Consistently falling behind on posting and holding up the game will result in dismissal, unless the player communicates with me regarding absences and expected return times.
Posting Quality: Detailed. This doesn't mean that every post has to be a novel - rather, I'm looking for quality over quantity, and for players who take an active interest in engaging with the story, NPCs, and one another.
Campaign Length: I am aiming to run this game as a long-term story. Anyone who looks to apply for the game should be prepared for a long-term commitment - if you're not interested in a long-term, group game where sexual content is present but not the sole focus, then you should look elsewhere.
Character Creation Disclaimer: OVA uses a pretty open character creation system, allowing for characters who are, potentially, varied in power, abilities, and flaws. This is fine, and fitting for an animé game; all characters must be approved by myself, however, and I will be hard pressed to accept a character who is amazing at everything and with almost no weaknesses.

APPLYING: How do I join?
If you're interested in the game, regardless of whether you own the rulebook or not (though owning it is a big plus), you should send me a private message so I can discuss it with you further. During our messaging back-and-forth, I'll likely cover the following:
  • What Star Odyssey is, and what kind of stories and content it might include.
  • What kind of animé shows or stories the player likes, and will likely take inspiration from.
  • The specifics of what kind of adult material might be included, and what subjects a player might wish to see omitted.
  • How to make a character, and how to get it approved - please note that I will be very critical of characters submitted, to ensure that everyone isn't just playing a bunch of all-powerful gods.
I'm also likely to request some writing samples from anyone applying for the game, or links to RPs that they're already involved in. This is likely going to be a big factor in whether or not I take someone on as a player - I know what kind of writers I'd like to run stories for, and rejection of an applicant should not be taken personally.

So regarding the  Posting through out the week is it a 5 day week we have to post in or 7 day week. By multiple times a week do you mean once a day or once every 2 days etc?

So are they unaligned worlds or does every planet or  nations  belong to   the Jurai or the  Union?

A 7 day week, and as often as possible. If you can only do every other day, no one will get angry, but it's worth everyone discussing posting exceptions beforehand so that no one is left behind or waiting.

There are unaligned worlds, but they are rare: most such places were either conquered by the Jurai, or approached by the Union, who forewarned them about their enemies and their belief that they are destined to rule the stars.

Ah okay so we have likely either been born  and raised on either a Jurai or Union  planet, How common  is space travel and  is it  highly  controlled by the two super powers of the universe. If so  are spacers possible?

Likely so. Keep in mind that if you're of the Union, you can be of whatever race you wish, though humans haven't been encountered yet (there is an in-setting reason why all beings look humanoid, but humans themselves haven't been encountered before play); if you're born in the Empire, you're likely Jurai or, if not, then a servant of the Empire (second class equivalent).

Space travel is performed by a great many people who have access to their own ships - like in Star Wars or similar. However, to jump between systems requires access to warp gates, which are usually manned by the Union or Empire. So unless you wish to go into stasis or similar, rapid travel between the galactic points requires utilising one of their gates.

As a side note, I've made an OOC Thread and Character Sheets one for those who are approved for play - please don't post there just yet until I've admitted you into the game, but it's worth noting their existence. Also, I have one confirmed player, who is taking the only human slot (you can be of a race that looks human, but you won't be from earth).

I doubt I'd qualify under what you're looking for, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for this one to start up so I can observe, it sounds like it'll be fun!

Glad to hear it! :)

Thanks Malkavian for the insight into the world a bit. That will help me flesh out my character when i start creation. Oh so for the character creation are we going to use any of the  Limiting the character  options such as Base zero,Power Ceiling,Scaled cost and Combined Effectiveness. I went an procured  the pdf of ova.

What kind of races are avaiable in this universe? Can one do a 'close range' kind of magic build? Like a spellfist kind character?

In the interest of fairness, I'd likely say Base Zero.

The main "specific" race are the Jurai. Humans exist, but Earth hasn't been discovered by either the Jurai or Union prior to play. The Union itself has a multitude of races as part of it, and given the diversity of animé races these can include anything from Lalafel style beings to Ronsos and similar. I'm open for suggestions - it's a big galaxy, after all.

In terms of magic: the Union's biggest asset aside from their diversity is that they have some races who are able to wield magic - not unlike the Avatar, this means a measure of control over the elements. The Jurai as a race CANNOT use magic, which is their big drawback, and they've countered this to a minor degree by crafting special gauntlets for elite warriors which can hold materia - magical energies captured in crystals which can be plugged into the gauntlet, allowing for that materia's magical energy to be used up to create powerful effects. Their gauntlet can only hold one such crystal at a time (and thus can control one element during), and they're short-lived.

Where can we look at this system so we can look at making characters? Or are you just wanting a template before we really make them?

Muse

Hi!  i'm still very intrested.

I'll continue to read up, but I wanted to speak up before another 15 people applied.  :)

I'd like to know more about the characters before they're made. The rulebook can be found in pdf form or ordered, but failing that I'm sure someone might be able to share. Either way, I'll be sitting in on all creation decisions, as it's easy to make over-powered characters using this system unless the GM puts down restrictions in place.

Awesome! Give what I've written thus far a look.

Malkavian

I've updated the Setting Information. Be sure to check it again!

Malkavian

Updated again!

IMPORTANT NOTE: We are using the Base Zero option, meaning a character can't be more than 5 points above or below 0 once all Abilities and Weaknesses are added together.

Ryu Wojin

I'm interested in the concept and am looking to be a magical type who can be a switch hitter effectively. I'm looking more at an avatar type of character than a wizard type of character. One weakness could be that my chara doesn't understand technology that well and wouldn't be helpful in spaceship stuff. Perhaps doesn't lile pistols and stuff either (or blasters but i don't want to assume star wars stuff).

I am gonna try to find the pdf for this but yeah. I have no idea on races that would work.

Malkavian

Magic in this setting is pretty much restricted to control of the elements: wizards don't exist beyond that.

Ryu Wojin

Can those elements be channeled into fists in addition to being thrown? So like a brawler but instead of having strength and muscle behind the fist, they rely upon the element to do what they need? (IE, good dex, poor strength stats. But they make up for that with a strong int/cha or whichever stat controls elemental power).

In terms of story, I was thinking of a character who was apart of a cult, and was going to become the next high priest so they funneled alot of training and discipline into her. But she never got to experince much of the 'fun' stuff in the universe so when she eventually decided what she was doing was wrong, she snuck away and is effectively on the run from them (seems to work along with your story too).

Malkavian

She is unlikely to be one of the girls being hunted by the Jurai - that's part of the meta plot - but it can certainly work. And provided the rulebook allows for such things, then elemental martial arts can certainly be attempted. I highly recommend getting a copy of the rulebook where you can, as my copy is hardback.

Ryu Wojin

Will do. Your welcome to go through my profile and look at posts in games I'm already apart of so you can see my writing. I'm a frequent poster, as I have notifications setup to go to my phone and I can post while at work.

So do Ki users exist or are the only energy manipulators those that can wield the elements?

Malkavian

I'd need to consider it.

I recommend all interested players discuss concepts with one another so that we don't end up with the same ones multiple times.
