About the world of 'Weres and Gears'

'Weres and Gears' is a world where Humans and Weres thrive, the latter being the more desirable race to be. It is set in a steam-punk era where all technology is either run by steam or coal. (if you don't know what steampunk is, please look it up.) Technically, everyone is a Lycanthrope (as in, an animal shifter) but they do not shift until they go through a ritual called, ‘The Change’ where they are forced to change and, if they fail to do so, are thus labeled, ‘Unchangeable’ (the humans of this game, though that term isn’t really used among the humans) or Deform (someone who wasn't able to complete their shift).

Some technology doesn't exist. For example, there aren't passenger planes, but there are steam-powered zeppelins. The main means of communication would be either telephone (not cellphones), radios, or even telegrams. No automatic weapons exist but single shot pistols/muskets or even semi-automatic guns are permitted as are bows, crossbows, swords, daggers, etc.

This world has separate regions that may have more of one kind of Were than another. Every clan has a leader or representative for their clan. This clan leader answers to the Rakshasa (Were-Tiger) leader of the region and every region leader answers to one world leader, who is also Rakshasa, referred to as the Maharajah.

Humans who had been deemed outcast because of their inability to shift (therefore called 'Unchangeables') or inability to completely shift and get stuck in a half form (called ‘Deforms’)  are forced to live in the barren lands that most consider have too harsh of conditions for civilized living. Places like this is referred to as 'The Fringe'. Separating Were cities and The Fringe is a gigantic metal wall that is twenty feet thick or more, a hundred feet tall, and about a hundred fifty feet into the ground with guards patrolling it to try and prevent the Unchangeables from sneaking back though. Every year the huge gates within the walls that surround the uninhabitable areas are opened up via a multiple gated system as more Unchangeables are forced into The Fringe. Rakshasa do not rule over The Fringe, therefore any laws that are there are enforced by the humans themselves, but it is still a very dangerous place since most do not follow any kind of law. If there is any kind of organization with a leader, it doesn't last long since the Rakshasa make sure the humans cannot rise up and rebel against them. Small cities do exist within The Fringe but they are difficult to find.

Magic exists but only a few Were-races have the ability to perform magic and, even then, it isn’t truly ‘magic’ but more mystical abilities. The most skilled at magic is the Rakshasa, Ixchel, Kitsune, and Manitou (Were-Tiger, Were-Jaguar, Were-Fox, and Were-Raven respectfully). Most magic is for divination, protection, and small tricks or illusions. It would be more effective if a knife was used rather than magic. Think more practical uses for magic or even to add flare that would inspire courage or fear. This magic isn't done with spells but is more an innate ability that they would hone just like a blacksmith would.

For more detailed information, including the character sheet form and even a form for creating your own Were, please check out our Info Thread!

This group is in the Extreme section simply because I feel it allows for more freedom in writing, not necessarily that there are aspects that aren't widely accepted among writers included. However, because it is in the Extreme section and that does allow members to write about pretty much anything (according to Elliquiy site rules, of course), if there are some things that you are not comfortable with, please state that in your character sheet.

If anyone has questions, feel free to ask me here!

Howdy! Stating my tentative interest now! I'd like to read more of the other information first. However, I'm thinking of playing a Deformed who was caught between transformation. I'm thinking part "lizard" or "dragon" where his arms and hands are scaly and clawed and maybe his teeth are pointed. Yet the rest of him is human. Any thoughts or concerns?

Amy: Shall I run and get the manual?
The Doctor: I threw it in a supernova.
Amy: You threw the manual in a supernova? Why?
The Doctor: Because I disagreed with it! Now stop talking to me when I'm cross!”

Heya! Thanks for the interest!

Right now, there isn't lizard Were race, so if you wanted you could create one or I could work on one so you can do that. I think I would be more comfortable with a type of lizard rather than dragon for the Were though they could be referred to as dragons. I'll consult with the founders to see what they say. Otherwise, sounds like a great idea!

I began to read some of the other threads. Is this a story that is already going on?

And I'd love to work the idea of the lizard out with you if that is acceptable.

There are some plots started but there isn't any one specific story for the group so more of a sandbox style.

Interested. I was thinking about two male characters one being a Were-Bear and the other a Deform Were-Raven. Where is the main game taking place? I would hate to have a character in the fringe and be like the only one out there and not be able to join the main game because of an impenetrable wall?

Looks like the others are excited to see what you and I come up with in creating the Were-lizard race and most definitely in seeing your character!

It's kind of half and half right now though it may end up mostly being in The Fringe. I look forward to seeing your characters!

The fringe versus the cities was also a question of mine. Being a Deform I'd obviously be restricted to the Fringe. That being said since I'm looking to make a scavenger type, is it possible that certain Deform are hired by normal Were to "find" certain things sold on the black market of the fringe? Or is that something that never happens?

Also I'm really excited to create this race and work with you. Would PMing you about this be ok?

I think that there would be certain Weres that would be willing to hire and trade with a Deform, certainly because it's black market stuff and definitely choosing them over an Unchangeable, so yeah that would be acceptable.

Feel free to pm me ^^

A few more questions: Regarding my Bear-were what symbol do they carve into them? Also, I will be playing a decorated soldier that has seen his fair share of action and trained many young cubs (he is middle-aged and considered slightly past his prime but still invaluable). I would like him to be highly ranked but I don't know what position I would have him in. I would like to have him assigned to protect someone of importance (perhaps a ruling family?) is there anyone like that in the game?

Regarding my Deformed Raven: I would like him to have acquired a network of resistance fighters, traders, and double agents. He will be dissatisfied with the killings and exiles and pushes equal rights (and to his extremists he pushes a plan for a ku de ta) These would be long-ranging plans that we may not even get to in the course of the story but that's kind of what his angle would be as he would be able to move fairly easily between the fringe and the Rauvrios (I'm guessing because it's hard to tell a deform from a real were raven?) I would be looking for friends, enemies, connections, drama basically if you would allow that sort of thing. Of course, if anything drastic were to happen I would talk to you first about it...

For the symbol, it would probably be something runic like Norse writing out even something that would pertain to an element that would also be unique for their clan. The only royalty there is at the moment would be my Rakshasa Overlord, Zakiyah, who rules over the Ruavrios continent. You could also have him be a sort of bodyguard for the Kitsune characters, Hayami and Haku, but you would have to ask their players if they'd be alright with that.

I can see you Raven Deform being a freedom fighter, yeah. And he'd certainly be able to pass as a Were, no problem. I'm all for political intrigue and drama but yes, I would appreciate at least a little heads up for anything drastic even if I would more than likely approve lol
