What would role-playing look like in the future? (Seeking female partner)

Not just sexual role-playing, but any kind?  What form would it take? Just how immersive could the technology get?

It's about a hundred years into the future. The internet, as we know it now, no longer exists, and has been replaced with The Link, a worldwide virtual reality network. Accessed via a permanent neural implant, The Link is now the predominant vehicle for commerce,  communications, entertainment and business.  Companies hold meetings in virtual board rooms, families go on vacation to holographic destinations, gamers sneak through digital dungeons.  The majority of life is spent inside The Link.

The only reason for the "real world" is for the various things that absolutely cannot be virtualized.  Actual jobs are still needed, as basic infrastructures still have to exist: electricity, sewage, farming, even maintenance of The Link itself, and the hardware that brings it to each person.

The story I'd like to tell in this world is a little loosely formed, but that's also the point: we could tell anything.  What I'm thinking about is a single, young male character. Like so many others, he has a mundane day job, but line many of us here he escapes into online life after work to be someone else.  He plays games, including an MMO similar to WoW.  As you do in games like that, he meets up with someone whose character, at least, is female.  They quest together for a while and seem to get along.  Over time they play other games (whatever kind you like) and really develop a friendship. 

The Link, just like the internet, had a very large "dark" side.  Porn is less of a thing, and instead, virtual sex is much, much more prevalent.  There are virtual fetish clubs of every flavor, or participants can simply meet up somewhere to hook up.  Avatars can be specific to each game or each "site", and some games especially will enforce a PG-13 type avatar (think like a Ken doll) while others allow full, anatomically-correct nudity. 

The story is pretty open-ended.  It allows for us to take it wherever we want. It also means that we can tell smaller, shorter stories within the bigger one, all with almost different characters if we want.  Different fetishes can be attempted too.  Gender reversal is also an option on occasion if you'd like.

Imagine it like this: we can spend a few posts telling the story of how they storm the castle, slay the dragon, retrieve the jewel of whatever, then hop into bed afterward to celebrate.  Then the next day they take a virtual trip to ancient Rome and watch a chariot race before visiting the baths.

Eventually though, as they grow closer, they start to wonder if maybe an online relationship isn't enough. But what will the other think of the real person behind the avatars?
