Perhaps a moderate one? One that may see magic as possibly useful if somehow managed? This whole system sounds very much like the way Dragon's Age magic works. The church hates it and tries to contain any and all mages and locks them away and largely forgets them until they need fireballs slung in their wars.

MU: I meant that because it's FORCE it doesn't have a particular color associated with it. But for a hexblade I can imagine it's probably black laced with silver.

Mister Ugly

I guess I am wondering if the church as written is color and can be ignored and hand waved away or is it something our PCs have to deal with often?

I can build a PC that works with the church, I just did not want to make one that I find is suddenily watching their back even from our party!

hah if youwanted to do something interesting or whatnot, you could generate a char that's one of Lia's siblings. she's got like 5 of them.

@ZameRagues:
I have some questions that may clear up some things for me. How much influence does the church have? The way you have it built it feels a lot like the Catholic Church of the dark/middle ages. I read everything carefully and wonder how Snake's Warlock could work with Zaer's cleric?
It would seem to me that Adran [cleric] should turn in or capture Zero at the first time Zero displays his abilities especially something like an eldritch blast. Zaer's background and his connection to the church would seem to me require him to do so.

I have had several ideas but keep stumbling on how monolithic the church seems. One idea was an EK/Fighter that is not 'sanctioned' by the church. I have to wonder would someone like that work with a cleric/knight's Templar?

I guess my concern is this. Do we build our PC and ignore the church background cause it will not be a problem or do we build the PC fully aware that our choices are be a part of the church or always run the risk of the church coming after our PC?

MU

In Marchesa you have the Church and the Military. The Military has the influence on many of the major cities along the countries borders, everywhere though the church is the power. Overall though the church has sway over the military, ultimately making the church the highest power. Adran/Zaer seems to be a very manipulative and greedy character when it comes to his goals, so if he seems Zero/Snake as a tool to further his cause he wouldn't turn him in but use him to his advantage, same for the other casters in the group.

The church is very monotheistic, there are legends and old stories of other "Gods" but these are considered fantasy and are considered pagan in practice.

Since Zaer has the only highly religious/Righteous cause type character, talk with him and see what you guys can come up with so that there is so much theorized conflict for later down the road.

Quote from: Mister Ugly on September 21, 2017, 03:44:39 PM
well the point being that 'summoning' the great sword is a huge hint at someone magical. I believe only a paladin and a warlock can do that?
Any decent cleric of the church should have some idea on how magical abilities work. If I was playing a cleric of the church and saw her summon a sword my first question would be, 'Are you in the Ember Corp?'
And how would she use deception to hide an Eldritch blast? Don't cast Hex where Zaer could see it being done either?

The rest would mean she would have to roll deception checks almost all the time?

MU

As a caster you and all the others have more knowledge of how magic works and what actually is magic. You also realize that there is a lot of "magic" that is over looked or blatantly used in the open. Paladins and Clerics can openly use their own magic without fear, but a lot of the casters that work for the church have been known to use magic for their own desires. Many cities/towns have stories of a guard, paladin, or cleric receiving aid from a caster not sanctioned by the church that never came to trial because the law figure didn't arrest them. There are also instances of Paladins/Clerics forcing the caster with them to perform their magic for their own desires. To put it simply, their is hypocrisy and corruption within the church, though they justify it at every step.

If Zame wants to allow you to make the beam invisible that would be his call. As a GM I do not allow any attack magic to be inivisible and none I know of, even magic missles, are invisible.

You cant have crackling energy and have it be invisible.

MU

No, an invisible magic attack would change rules that I don't want to alter.

A final note, a caster with a decent arcane proficiency would realize that a lot of the professional Eden athletes utilizes various magical effects when the play that they don't mention but make no attempt to hide either during a match. It is a rarity that any of the athletes are ever tried by the church for such things.

Eden athletes = monks using Ki are not trialed.

Anyways on my char; he is indeed religious zealot who has burned witches and arcane casters, all as means earn loyalty and brand of a zealot in eyes of church and become inquisitor who is step above of normal clerics as they are clerics who can send other clerics on trials on sign of proven heresy. But my char acknowlegdes the fact that church is corrupt body (that much his mentor from Ember Corps has educated him about and in truth Ember Corps would purge entire church if they could).

So overall he can use his position on personal advantages (and plans to do so acquire his spellcasting slave back), so I imagine he can make somekind of magical binding oaths (ceremony spell covers that part quite well) to all arcane casters in group to obey his commands and thus be under his chain and check (not literal chain but more divine oriented one). Oath is means to keep his face and his backside secure against his political rivals in the church who would love nothing more than get him removed or executed for performing heresy.

Of course law/College could contest his claims and likely try force him yield over his 'arcane casting pets' but he would stand firmly his ground. He has high skills all around for detect bullshit and talk down bullshit (and if needed give fierce back handed swipes to those who defy his authority which is sort of style inquisitors often use and Ember Corps). So he can be cooperative but he is clearly manipulative and also part selfish; overall you need work for him for him cover your backs against the church. So when he is included in party he very much is going to be leader and also highly religious and follower of One God, but also he works as living insurance you rest do not get bullied or torched by the church other clerics/inquisitors.

Mister Ugly: So short answer roll char you like, but myself as player, would appreciate a 'church approved' eldricth knight as his personal muscle/bodyguard :). Or paladin.

Zaer Darkwail

Or one idea is that my char takes performing sin same way as Alexander Anderson/his mentor does; once life time of doing sin for progressing church goals he performs suicide as form repent for his sins (most likely form of execution is that he burns himself alive like he had burned so many others). So basically so long he performs sin for betterment of the church (and part of his personal enjoyment as in case acquire his favorite slave), he will repent for the one god in sacrificing himself on the altar.

As said though there must be clause where he can make sort oath with everyone so church does not start hunt him down as heretic (or Ember Corps as no doubt his 20th level mentor would come bust his ass if caught doing heresy as it would reflect upon his failure to educate him properly).

Kathyan

I had in mind a fighter that wanted to became a paladin but wasn't able to make it as one yet she still would be a bodyguard albeit regarded in a lower way thus making of her a slave.

Zaer Darkwail

Well, do think about how she became slave; part of debt? Reformed criminal who is freed only if they repent/become paladin?

Mister Ugly

In an indirect way my question has been answered. Zame, I take is that you would prefer a group linked to the church since as you said paladins/clerics force arcane users to work with the church. Even Zaer is strongly suggesting a church group since he seems able to arrange binding ceremony to the church or basically go 'work for me under my control or die'

Now I am not against making a PC that is fully within the church, I just like to be aware of that before I design backgrounds.

So I will build a character that works with the church and avoid any conflict!

I simply created the world, the type of group that characters are is solely up to you guys. If you want to play a group aligned with the church, thats fine. If you want to play a band of casters hoping the church burns to the ground, up to you guys. Perhaps you want to play a group of casters/slaves that work alongside a cleric that has questionable intentions, peachy.

Well that is interesting!! Kathyan wants a slave PC. I had not planned on being a 'master' for this game but I have no problem working as one and working out details. Though if Kathyan wants to be a fighter type maybe she should get with Zaer's PC and I can work up an idea with ESG!

My original sorceress idea was linked with Zaer/Adran.     With the reboot to initiate the game.  I decided to change the concept a bit.   To give a more believable backstory as to how magic is awaken in the character of Woman.    I am open to any combination.   As I have not contacted or discussed such with Zaer over Woman.    I agree with MU if Kathyan is thinking a fighter type and slave.   Zaer character makes perfect sense to belong to Zaer's character.

On Woman's part,  what type of character are you going to bring in MU?    If part or allied with the mechanism of this monolith of the church or outside of it.  Either way Woman can fit in.   Either with Zaer or with your proposed character MU.  In regards to a character align with the church.   For its perfectly plausible a character of means within the church would use such with a character of arcane magic.   For personal gain and advancement.   While one outside of the establish state.  Also would find use for one of arcane talents.

To help whoever she is paired with as them being her new master.    One of her goals is that elusive want to extend life.   The search for immortality.  As with her backstory and concept of starting out late in life as a adventurer.   The middle age her run as such is not the forty plus years but  a mere five years to if extremely fortunate fifteen years.   So like her original master of so many years, she also begins to feel the weight of time.   An also desires to find a way to get more time.   So a unspoken goal of the character.  Thus even through she is a submissive character portrayed as such with slave background and within the context of the story.  She has a drive other then being just a pleasure slave.  I reason to search out more about arcane magic to reach into that open fountain of magic within and find that elusive wellspring of longevity.

Zaer Darkwail

Yeah, ESG char was connected to my char and was slave which my char worked towards acquiring back on himself (with aid of church influence and such). If Kathya makes pure martial char then need change my background story present her situation or that the Kathya is just extra slave Adran had acquired while working for church and he still works on getting his slave from College (and thus will be NPC unless anyone rolls slave backgrounded sorceress).

Name: Angelica (no last name as a slave)
Age/Gender/Height/Weight: 19/Female/5'8"/145lbs.
Class: Fighter (Warmaster) L5
Background: Courtier
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Religious: Doesn't know much about religion but she firmly believes in what she was taught at thechurch
Personality: Having a big respect for the the church Angelica wants to be acknowledged for her work and wants everyone to appreciate it, despite being a slave she is a proud warrior and while she might have no chance at all she firmly believes that if she works hard enough she will be able to become a white knight or at least as a white warrior if such thing even exist.

She isn't smart or knowledgeable, not even on religious matters but she has always worked hard within the upper class that surround the clergy member and while she is a slave she isn't submissive to anyone just to those directly to the church as that is the most important thing to her. Ironically she is willing to do anything without objecting at all to be recognized as more than just a slave even if it's something she doesn't like.

Backstory
Backstory: 25-30***************************
Since she was young she was far more beatiful and graceful than the average commoner girl which was the reason she was picked out of town and taken by one of the acolytes before someone else claimed her, nobody would miss an orphan girl and she would probably end as street burglar or as a whore if nothing was done but they would surely take care of her. Teaching her the ways of godin a deeper way than it was done with the commonfolk they hoped she became an acolite, one that could help with the sacred duties while also providing sexual relief to the members of the church. Angelica was too bright though and that wasn't possible which meant being relegated to nothing but a simple bodyguard nonetheless she was taught good manners and how to behave in high society but she was still subservient.

Watching how her holy counterparts were kept on the highest regards Angelica's aim was to somehow achieve the status of a holy knight so she accepted whatever task that was asked of her hoping that one day she would have the opportunity to prove herself worthy of recieving such title happily allowing herself ot be used by the church, by the court, by men and women and to be used just as property as she found herself subject to different owners in the few years that she served. Never was there one complain about her so Angelica found herself very happy, she thought she was on a good way to achieve what she wanted and that she was slowly climbing her way up though she never actually questioned herself why she served the same master more than once not thinking that she existed simply to amuse the conceited highborn people that no matter how exquisite or how beautiful simply exchanged slaves among each other as easily as they wore different jewelry every day.

Every master had different requirements of her so she never knew what to expect when she was handed to a new one, what could this man wanted her to do now, but it didn't matter to her, whatever she was she would do her best.

Looks good Kathyan, I imagine your char was most likely passed to Adran (and thus explain why you accompany him at least). With Woman (sorcerer slave) could tied to Mister Ugly's char who works to church as well. So irony that church discourages/dislikes slavery on text book basis, but practicality many church members have slaves in employment (so thus fill further hypocrite nature of the church and it's teachings).

Mobile
You are exceptionally speedy and agile. You gain the following benefits:

Your speed increases by 10 feet.
When you use the Dash action, difficult terrain doesn’t cost you extra movement on that turn.
When you make a melee attack against a creature, you don’t provoke opportunity attacks from that creature for the rest of the turn, whether you hit or not.

Class Features
Ceaseless Dance

At 1st level, the way your fighting style blends into your continuous dancing makes your actions difficult to anticipate.

You gain the following benefits while you are wielding a light weapon or thrown ranged weapon, you have at least one free hand, and you aren't wearing armor or wielding a shield:

*When you take the dodge action, you can use a bonus action to attack with a light melee weapon or thrown ranged weapon that you're holding. You don't add your ability modifier to the damage of the bonus attack, unless that modifier is negative.

*When you hit a creature with a weapon attack or spelldancer cantrip that only targets that creature, you gain a cumulative +1 bonus to all subsequent damage rolls. This bonus is lost if your speed is 0, you can't move, or if your turn ends and you have not attacked a hostile creature since your last turn. Whenever you take damage while this bonus is active, you must make a Performance skill check to maintain your rhythm. The DC equals 10 or half the damage you take, whichever number is higher, + the bonus to damage rolls being granted by this feature. This bonus has a maximum value that increases as you gain levels as a spelldancer, as shown in the Ceaseless Dance Damage column of the Spelldancer table.

Unarmored Defense
Beginning at 1st level, while you are wearing no armor and not wielding a shield, your AC equals 10 + your Dexterity modifier + your Charisma modifier.

Spelldancing
By the time you reach 2nd level, you are prepared to manipulate ambient elemental energy through movement and body language. See Player's Handbook chapter 10 for general rules of spellcasting, and the end of the class description for the spelldancer spell list. To cast one of these spells, you use its casting time and other rules, but you don't need to provide verbal components for it. Spelldancer spells can only be cast while you are wearing no armor and not wielding a shield or a two-handed weapon.

Cantrips
You learn two cantrips of your choice from the spelldancer spell list. You learn additional spelldancer cantrips of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Spelldancer table.

Spell Slots
The Spelldancer table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your spells of 1st level or higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spells level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.

For example, if you know the 1st-level spell burning hands and have a 1st-level and a 2nd-level spell slot available, you can cast burning hands using either slot.

Spells Known of 1st Level and Higher
You know two 1st-level spells from the spelldancer spell list.

The Spells Known column of the Spelldancer table shows when you learn more spelldancer spells of your choice. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots. For instance, when you reach 5th level in this class, you can learn one new spell of 1st or 2nd level.

Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the spelldancer spells you know and replace it with another spell from the spelldancer spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots.

Spellcasting Ability
Charisma is your spellcasting ability for your spelldancer spells, since your ability to harness magical forces is determined by the quality of your dance. You use your Charisma whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability.

In addition, you use your Charisma modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a spelldancer spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.

Spell Save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier

Spellcasting Focus
You can use a spelldancer's arcane focus, a specialized piece of jewelry costing 10gp, as a spellcasting focus for your spelldancer spells.

Crescendo
Starting at 2nd level, you have learned to use the movement of your weapon attacks to fulfill the somatic requirements of your spells. When you use your action to make a weapon attack on your turn, if you have a bonus to damage rolls granted by your Ceaseless Dance feature and the attack hits the target, you can cast one spelldancer cantrip that has a casting time of 1 action using a bonus action.

Style School
At 3rd level, you start devloping your movements in a way that is more focused on harnessing a certain elemental power, as a student of one of the four style schools: Aerodancing, Geodancing, Hydrodancing, and Pyrodancing, all detailed at the end of the class description.

Your choice grants you features at 3rd level, and again at 7th, 15th, and 20th level.

Ability Score Improvement
Allocate +1 to two ability scores of your choice, or +2 to one.  [+1 to Charisma, +1 to Strength]

Extra Attack
Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.

===============================
Style School- Pyrodancer
Trained In The Flame

When you enroll in this school at 3rd level, you gain the following benefits:

*You gain proficiency in the handaxe and battleaxe. Weapons of these types count as light when you wield them, and you can use your choice of your Strength or Dexterity modifier for the attack and damage rolls. You must use the same modifier for both rolls.
*You can still gain the benefits of your Ceaseless Dance feature while wielding a weapon in each hand.
*You know the Control Flame cantrip, and it does not count against the number of cantrips you know. If you already know the Control Flame cantrip, you can instead learn another cantrip you do not already know from the spelldancer spell list.

Background
The second daughter of two farmhands, Y'liss enjoyed a simple childhood.  She had the love of her family, the blessing of a roof over her head, and the fortune of good health.  She was taught the value of hard work and strong religion by all, but especially by her sister, Nathara.  It was an ideal family, the very image of a god-fearing family.  Nathara idolized the church, and by extension, the one true god.  She yearned to be like the paladins she heard such stories about, hunting down heretics and sinners for the betterment of society.  To this end, she trained day in and day out, almost any time she was able, spurred on by the possibility of this farm girl becoming something greater.  She aspired to be one of those greats.  Y'liss supported her and followed in her sister's footsteps, determined to prove herself to be every bit as capable as her sister.  As they grew up, Y'liss began to train in earnest, just like the sister she looked up to and admired so much.  As Nathara's training bore fruit and she claimed to have summoned forth a tiny fragment of holy power, Y'liss took to training in the barn.  Keeping in mind the lessons Nathara taught her, she aimed to summon some fragment of the divine while Nathara was carrying out errands.  Try as she might, she simply couldn't seem to do what her sister could.  When praying simply didn't work, she let her emotion get the better of her.

Imagine her surprise when a gout of flame issued forth from her hands, instead of some manner of holy light, or a chorus of angels, or something divine.  Unfortunately, the arcane fires spread rapidly amongst the hay, leaving Y'liss in a dangerous position.  Were it not for the fortuitous appearance of her mother and quick thinking, the girl surely would've perished in flames of her own design.  She was confused, bewildered!  That wasn't the same kind of power her sister let loose, and yet, it felt so natural.  Her mother checked for any injuries, and warned her daughter to stay silent about the burst of magic in front of her sister.  So, when Nathara returned home in a panic, Y'liss did as she was told, shrinking beneath the would-be paladin's gaze.  As far as Nathara knew, it was a simple mishap involving a lantern falling over, nothing more.  From that point forward, her mother seemed to take every opportunity she could get to get Nathara and her father away from home.  She explained what was happening to Y'liss, telling a grand story about her younger days.  She went on about how she was a true rebel, a caster who could not be quelled, would not be silenced, and the unique method of casting passed down each generation.  While Nathara did not seem to possess the spark, Y'liss did, and it was hers to be taught and to master.

With a mix of excitement, guilt, and trepidation, Y'liss abandoned the training she'd taken part in with Nathara, instead spending time with her mother in secret.  Gone were the days when she would accompany her sister on errands simple and tough.  As her bond with her mother grew, so too did the rift between sisters.  Eventually, Nathara became suspicious, and snuck home to watch the two while she was supposed to be out.  It was there that she discovered the truth:  Both her mother and site were filthy wielders of the arcane!  She bid her time, making a plan to cleanse them.  Her father would have to die, of course.  The next time she was asked to go run errands, she begged her father to let Y'liss run them, claiming she was in severe pain.  Once her sister was out of the way, she lured her father to her, and she struck him down.  Even if he carried no trace of the arcane, there was no way he didn't know about their mother, and that made him a collaborator.  Her mother was next, and it was a simple thing to bind her hands and feet, restricting her movements, and therefore shutting down her spells.  She demanded information, wishing to know how long she'd known, and how far she was willing to let her precious sister fall.  She was furious that their mother would dare to corrupt her beloved sister.  Try as she might to explain, her words fell on deaf ears.  In the end, it was all she could do to beg Nathara to spare her sister, if she had any love for their family, past or present.

When Y'liss returned, a burning home greeted her.  Stoic and cold, Nathara was waiting for her beside their mother's corpse, bathed in holy fire.  Y'liss couldn't help but attack her, spurred on by a fury unlike any she'd felt before.  Arcane power welled up inside her, coursing through her veins, and still, she was only able to land one devastating blow on Nathara, the strike infused with unquenchable heat that burned the would-be paladin's face.  A pity that was the only damage she could do.  It should have ended there, but it didn't.  By some twisted sense of justice, Nathara spared her, instead urging her to remember the god she so worshipped before, to repent for her wicked ways so they could be as sisters again.  By divine mercy, Y'liss fell unconscious before Nathara reminded her, slicing the one true god's holy symbol into her back, plunging a blade into her body.  If she survived, it was by god's will.

When she awoke, it was to a great pain, her screams echoing through the air.  Her body was intensely hot, and every inch of her ached.  She smelled burning, and discovered it was her own body, or a wound.  Her great wound had been cauterized somehow, by some grace...no, not by the grace of god, by her own power.  Her home was destroyed, her family all but gone, and her life destroyed.  She was an arcane user, a monster to the rest of the world.  The truth of this one god was naught but a lie.  Nothing that could be called "divine" could possibly be this cruel.  What was she supposed to do?  She couldn't stay here, that much was certain.  So she did the only thing she could think to do: wander.  She traveled from town to town, until she found herself without any currency.  It was by a stroke of luck that she discovered the solution.  In a fit of tears, she expressed herself the only way she knew how.  She took to the edge of town and danced for quite some time, letting all her feelings out in the freedom of the outdoors, with no judging eyes, or so she thought.  It seemed as though she'd been noticed by the sound of clapping, and the clink of coins heading her way.  So she danced, and danced, and danced some more.  She told her story without any words, in taverns, inns, and anywhere that would have her, and she earned her coin that way.  She traveled and improved, and her fame grew with time as well, as did her talent and skill.  How fitting that she ended up in Song Quarry, where she's remained for quite some time, growing her name and audiences both.  For the time being, she has lodgings and coin, to say nothing of the admirers bold enough to send letters to her.

However, she still has no path, and can think of herself as little more than a wanderer or a performer.  Her dreams are still haunted by the images of what happened the night her family perished, and her sister standing there, cold and unmoving.  Her heart yearns for release, and for the return of her Nathara, not the one the left her for dead.  That is the only thing she can be sure of in this world, the only goal she can reliably achieve.  She wants Nathara back, and will do whatever she must to turn her from this corrupt religion before it's too late...and if she can turn the church on its head, so be it.

Well, it means either an intelligence or charisma dump stat... I'd dump strength, but then I wouldn't be able to carry anything at all, and then I'd suck at every single strength save, so yeah...
