An Unrequited Love
Setting: Civil War Era
The land would not heal for it was scarred with violence, and with the blood of men.
Wounds were great and grave, deep and mortal … unforgiving.
It should not have been, and it was forever to be written in history: brother against brother, sons dying, and husbands and fathers no more.
Jasper Cheramie had left his beloved, his childhood sweetheart, his wife, to fight for the traditions of the gentle South, for a lifestyle …but the Confederate Army declared him dead. A letter had Mrs. Cheramie received, but something lacked: no body to bury, to see to funeral rites, to ease her mind that the crows were not feasting on his flesh in some field… or that it was simply a mistake.
Without her husband, the estate was in question: a once generous tobacco plantation now in the possession of a young widow. It would entice particular men of greed to hold interest in the beauty especially that of her neighbor. Their lands bordered on one another.
Then too, there was another—a gentleman who had been forgotten—Jasper’s brother. Twins they had been, and while Jasper won Miss Lily’s heart, took her to be his wife, there had been another who deeply desired her, who had become obsessed. It was the reason he had been locked away in the asylum…that so possessive was Jasper’s twin of Lily that he threatened to kill her when he could not have her…and he had killed women of similar appearance to sate that desire. A particular darkness plagued the man.
Now, the brother has come home.
Now, he can take possession of the estate, and of Lily… and rid of all who stand in his way. The only uncertainty he has in his mind is whether or not Lily can love him.
Notes: Looking for a partner (gender unimportant) to write from the point-of-view of Jasper’s twin brother. Looking to explore the themes of unrequited love and dark desires; the social injustices of the era; emotional wounds.
