Internet won't display any pages?

So randomly my internet will just stop displaying any pages, as if I wasn't connected to the internet. It lasts anywhere from the time it takes to close out of the browser, to a few minutes. I've checked my firewall, internet, and scanned for viruses. When this happens though, I can still connect to other internet using things like Multiplayer Minecraft.

So it's not my internet going out at random times. I've use Malware checkers, Avast, and AVG to all check for viruses, nothing. I've checked my firewall and even turned it off for a moment to see if that was it, it's not. I've cleared my temp files, cache, cookies, everything to do with that internet. (Even my history D:)

I'm at a loss for what is wrong >o< It started doing this ever since my niece was over and I put on Microsoft Family Safety guard to make sure she couldn't get on anything dangerous since her mother doesn't let her on Facebook or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance~

Next time this happens, open up a command prompt or shell and type
ping elliquiy.com
Or whatever
If that says 'cannot resolve host' and
ping 208.117.11.90
works fine, then it's a DNS issue. You can look up how to use Google's public DNS, there are other free dns providers, as well.

Xenphir

Alright thanks. I'll try it next time it happens :o

Xenphir

I don't know what it was suppose to do, but the Command Prompt box opened and listed a few things and then it closed and nothing happened, and the issue was still there.

Vekseid

erm.

When you go to run something, run
cmd
to get a persistent command box prompt. You can try both those items now to see what happens normally, for example.

My internet often behaved this way when I was running Bittorrent constantly and without the proper configuration. The router got overloaded with all the connections and couldn't make any new ones. Do you reset your router when this happens?

Xenphir

I haven't reset my router in awhile because its a pain since I can't just un plug it and plug it back in, due to it having a battery. I will try it next time it does it if it will help. I've used U-Torrent once yesterday, but it was happening long before then.

This is what I got when I did it :o

Was this while Elliquiy seemed to be 'down'?

Xenphir

When all my internet pages wouldn't display, that's what it said. It was like two seconds after I just replied to a post that none of the sites on web browsers were working that I did it, so, yeah?

And Elliquiy itself wouldn't work, also?

Xenphir

Correct. It did the same thing everything else did :o

Xenphir

Yep. I can get on https but one second later I'll go to http and it won't work. I haven't tried it for any other site, but Elliquiy works with the https during one of these periods.

Xenphir

I've noticed something quite strange. I was on a website I use often, and suddenly a lot of the images turned into black X's, but not all of them. So I refreshed to see if it would help, and instead the whole site was messed up. It was all white with one picture and a bunch of blue links from the site and everything was misplaced. (As if I were looking on an old mobile phone or something :/)

I refreshed one more time and the page couldn't be displayed again x.x

Your ISP is using a proxy for http traffic and it is occasionally goofing, it seems. You may want to call them. For Elliquiy you can use the ssl everywhere plugin if you use a browser that supports it.

Xenphir

Alright, thanks :o I'll call Comcast in the morning.

Xenphir

So much for that. Called and got some guy that didn't know a thing that I was talking about after I tried explaining it several times x.x Then he just gave me some number to call, and calling that number was only to try and purchase higher tech support -.- I guess I'll just have to deal with it.

Would switching to a public DNS help in this respect (seeing as Comcast is seeking to make money off of the failure of their own crappy service)?

No, the IP still resolves.

The only real solution here is to switch to https. I've been debating about forcing it for awhile. You can use HTTPS Everywhere to force it yourself.

Oniya

That's not going to help for any sites that aren't https, though, right?  (I've been using the https version of E for a while - except when someone's link is formatted for the http: version.)

Xenphir

That prevents me from using I.E. (Yes, It "Sucks", its "lame" But I like it :p)

Will it help with non-https sites though? A few of my sites are only http, and they don't work in https.

Vekseid

No, your sort of situation is part of why I purchased an SSL certificate for E in the first place.

Xenphir

Ah well then I don't think it will do me much good xD However thanks at least, for mentioning the https thing. Now when it fails and I've nothing to do I can still come hang out on E while I wait for it to be done with its little "fit".

Too bad its been slow with the holidays coming up xD

Thanks a lot Veks!

Well I thought it couldn't get worse but now even https does not work during one of those periods. I re-called Comcast tech support, and it seems they cannot even send a refresh signal to my modem, and they couldn't even find anyone under my address/account name x.x Not sure what is going on but it does seem to be the connection between them, and the modem x.x
