Oh yeah, here's a quick backstory.
The Nazis build a lunar colony in WWII and flee to it after the Red Army captures Berlin. The Naizs use there V-4 mass driver to bombard earth from the moon, forcing the Allies to focus on mounting an attack on there lunar colony.
Instead of nuking Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the bombs are used to destroy the Nazi-moon colony. With the moon base now held by the allies, Imperial japan conditionally surrenders, ending the war.
In the Post war boom, the sexual revolution takes full power, making society more liberal and open with sex, Technological inovations from the war cure most STDs and the conservative movement never fully recovers,
The US and soviet space forces both lay claim to the moon, for both it's supply of Helium 3, and the V-4 which can still be used to attack targets on earth.
The cold war escalates, resulting in several small conflicts on earth including the Korean and Vietnamese wars, but the US and USSR space fleets never end up firing there weapons in anger.
During the cold war, both superpowers investigate the potential of individuals with Extra Sensory Perception for there respective space forces. The Ability to send messages faster than light makes them an essential tool for interplanetary communications.
In 1989 Gorbachev and Regan sign a peace treaty that establishes the United Nations Space force as the sole military authority in space. Gorbachev's reformed Soviet union is much more willing to negotiate with the United states and Japanese Empire, leading to peace between the three superpowers.
In 1994, Mexican scientist Miguel Alcubierre invents the Alcubierre drive, a device which allows a spacecraft to travel faster than light by warping space around itself.
In the following decades, the UNSF explores stars which may contain earth-like planets and establishes a series of off-world colonies. Hoping to reduce the burden on the now overpopulated earth.
Then, in 2012, telepathic contact with a colony on a planet orbiting the star 51 Pegisai suddenly ceases. The last messages received were only the emotions of fear and anger, suggesting the colony had been attacked by an unknown enemy.
