Pope Benedict's Visit to the U.S.

This article brings up something that I've actually been thinking a lot about myself, having been born, raised and Confirmed as a Roman Catholic.  Is the American Catholic Church truly still a part of the Greater Roman Catholic Church, or are we starting to become our own institution?  On the surface, I'd say yes to the first part, since we share the same rituals and ceremonies, but deeper down, I'm not so sure.  Do you think it's possible that, in the future, the world will see another Great Schism, with the end result being a separate American Catholic Church?

Go! *shoots the starting pistol*

(I just realized this may go better in the Politics and Religion forum.  Maybe it should be moved.)
