Online Necromunda
« on: February 12, 2008, 01:15:23 pm »
Hey, is anyone here up to play online Necromunda?

We'd use the splendid 'maptool' as our virtual table and we can make any gimmicky terrain we wish. Multi-level structures will be a bit difficult, but possible if we mark them properly.

Necromunda itself is available as a free download.

So, no miniatures needed, just a will to play:)

Ok.
Here's the program: http://rptools.net/doku.php?id=maptool:intro.
On the same page, you can find a very cool gadget for making tokens to use in the game.
One snap and you've got a token to play.

Myself, I'm going Orlock and might try a Scav gang too. I'll also make some simple objects to be terrain.

Sounds interesting, nice linky to the tools, might need to also add said links to the useful link area.

Probably won't get a look at it tonight. I've a few things I need to do, and I seem to have a cold coming on hard that makes me want to just crawl into my pit instead.

That's too bad Hairy. But let me know when you'll feel better and still want to play.
ZK, you game?

In a similar vein, do you know Vassal? There are mods for it for both Battlefleet Gothic and B5: A Call to Arms.

I've not played it, but heard good things about it.

I know Vassal. It's decent as well. I'd probably be using it if not that MapTool is easier to set up and there's no dedicated Necromunda(or Mordheim) mod for it.
Gothic sounds interesting, though.

I used to play Esher back in the days. I think I will give this a look.
Ok, let me know when you want to try it.

I never played it before.
It's not particularly complicated and it's good, violent fun.
Rules are here to download.
http://www.specialist-games.com/necromunda/rulebook.asp

BTW, if someone wants, I can make them tokens for their gang. You'd just need to send me your roster first:)

Ooh! Me!

Hmm... someone already has Escher picked, so could I play Arbites? :D

*The rules for Arbites are on their site, too. Or I could play Redemption, if you don't want the Arbites on the field.

Hey, sure. The optional rules are fun:)

By the way, here's how maps can look in the game. Since MapTool isn't 3d, I just write the height of buildings next to them. The only thing I didn't figure out to do comfortably are complicated multi-level structures. Those are possible to do, but would require us to mark which troops are 'on top' and which are 'inside'.

I knew it sounded familiar but didn't ring a bell. ^.^ I'd have to read the rules. Does it differ a lot from WH40K?

It's like WH40k but with every trooper being individual and able to gain skills.
Typically 10 or more people per side. It takes place in a Hive World, with gangs fighting for territory.

So, I've made up two "gangs": A Redemption crusade, complete with priestess (heavily based on the SoB, in fact, this could seriously be a recruitment facility the Adepta Sororitas use from time to time) and an Arbites patrol, complete with their little doggie. Both teams are mostly female, because that's the way I roll, but the Arbites patrol has a mandatory male, for the "Allo allo allo, what's all this then? Things look a bit pear-shaped here or what. You're fucking nicked, my son."

So, I can use one, the other, or even both if we're playing large scale multiple gangs per player stuff.

So I made an Orlock gang for now and I'm going to make a Scavvy horde as well.
Scavvies are fun:)

I'm all ready to play, myself. We could use IM to coordinate further and I'll make a MapTool server for us. We can have the first battle as a 'test' one or begin a normal campaign, with territories and stuff.

Do we need to do it over IM? I'm very opposed to playing games over IM.

Nah, I meant IM would be a good way to agree when to play.

The program I mean to use is, let's say... 'map with a chatroom'
We can post a screenshot of every turn to the forums, but otherwise it's like playing a normal tabletop game.

Sorry if I sounded confusing, you thought it's more of a PBEM kind of deal?

Yeah, I thought we'd basically use the boards as normal - I thought the map program would basically just be used to post the movement and all every turn. I guess I'll bow out then - I just can't hold myself to a schedule for online things, and don't like to do IM style play where I have to pay attention and can't just read and post in my own good time.

I'd be willing to play it on the boards as well. This way it would look like battle reports in White Dwarf... It's not a bad idea really...

Ok. So I assume we're going to be posting our moves in the form of the current map picture + colorful arrows and such?

Also, we're going to start a campaign, I assume? If so, post your gang and generate territories and everything... Then I'll generate a random mission.

Oh yes, do you want me to make graphical tokens for your chars? Or maybe you have pictures for me to use?
