Showing my age here, but back when Carter was at the end of his term, we had a similar international incident, involving Americans being held hostage in Iran.  Just like this situation, the 'deal' finally went through just after it was clear that Carter would not be reelected - less because of Reagan's influence, and more because it would be a slap in Carter's political face.

The major difference there though is that Carter didn't spend the year before the election passionately defending Iran and sending them billions in weapons, while vetoing any international pressure on Iran.

Trump is still arming Israel and they are still bombing Gaza. Notice that Trump has said nothing on Israel and wants
Gaza to build up the beaches. No mention of over 75 years of Israeli atrocities against the Palestinians, now it is in the
West Bank.  No one seems to care anymore, it is all about the tariffs. How short are memories. Hostages? Israel has thousands of them in prisons with no charges. Give Iran the bomb or take all bombs away from Israel. Fair is fair.
In the end, all we have left are memories.

Do people no longer care that Israel is killing Palestinians in the occupied Gaza territories?  Trump seems to have givin Netanyahu the ok to do as he pleases. Hostages be damned. The whole world is talking about the ongoing extermination. Israelis doing more damage that anyone thought possible. Netanyahu only cares about power and staying out of jail.  Trump only cares about appeasing his Jewish supporters and making money. No hope unless Europe steps up.
In the end, all we have left are memories.

It's not that no one cares, but everyone's got their own problems right now. Between the global economic order being overturned and threatening to crash outright, and decades old political and military alliances being torn apart we all got domestic problems to worry about.

Canada is just trying to steer the course through the next 5 years without mass unemployment and total economic collapse. We need to find new military partners, make huge changes to our trade infrastructure, etc, etc. Average Canadians simply don't have the time or the money to worry about anyone other than ourselves right now and other countries are in similar situations.

That may sound cold, but it's the reality. We aren't in a position to help even if Ottawa wanted to.

A lot of people care quite a lot there just isn't much that you can do if you aren't pulling the strings of arms sales. I don't know a single person who isn't fully on the side of Palestinian independence at this point, at least not that I'm still talking to. And that's a definite shift from when this started.

We all knew things would get worse under Trump but the Democrats in the USA haven't formed a meaningful opposition on Israel (or much else for that matter but that's a different rant) and the few that do are either local officials without much power or basically excommunicated at this point.

That's the problem with a two party system that stands united, you can't threaten to vote for the opposition when the opposition doesn't oppose. And the old idea that going "against" Israel is political suicide still seems to have everyone by a strangehold. I don't even think stopping this mass murder is against Israel (at least not against a good future for the people of Israel) tbh but again that's another rant.

So if America can't do it then who? Middle Eastern oligarchs all seem more interested in cozying up to Trump than anything else. China doesn't seem to be interested in getting involved. India and Israel are all buddy buddy these days. Sure there are some optimists who think Trump and Netanyahu aren't getting along but I'm really skeptical that goes anywhere. For all Europe is talking about breaking with the US over Ukraine and helping them independently the same sort of thing isn't happening with Palestine, or at least not any differently than it was a few years ago.

But also, America is the one that matters the most because something like 70% of Israel weapons come from America, with close to 30% from Germany. ( https://www.sipri.org/sites/default/files/2024-03/fs_2403_at_2023.pdf ) And those are two countries that haven't budged at all in this.

Sure there are some organizations that you can donate to that will do all they can to get aid to Gaza but watch them all get stopped at the border or be so haphazardly managed that you have no idea if your money is doing anything. That is when the IDF isn't just flat out murdering them. I can't host a Palestinian refugee because we aren't letting them in and making them leave is part of the problem. And for all the supposed connectiveness we have international solidarity seems completely lulled to sleep with this idea that posting on social media is accomplishing anything.

...I hit post before that was done and can't edit here. So sorry that's a mess.

But yes, people still care. A lot of people care quite a lot. The lack of conversation is more of a reflection that there just isn't much left to say and the ability to do anything has been effectively oppressed. The only real optimism I can give is that we all knew this was coming under Trump and struggles like this never end overnight, and hope that we are in the darkest hour right now and hope that things get better from here. But how? I don't know. The traditional means to change in America is voting and that door is shut at the moment on this issue. All you can really do is let the democrats know your vote is up for grabs and the candidate that stops weapons shipments to Israel gets it and then cry as they roll their eye at you and either take your vote for granted or ignore it. Sorry I'm trying not to be a doomer and I think the feeling of hopelessness is part of the oppression (as it always is) but I have a hard time seeing the way around it.

Sooo in related news: a man from Chicago who - and I'm quoting CBS here - "has a history of posts about pro-Palestine activism, frustration with the media coverage of the Israel-Hamas war, inflammatory posts about Israel and discussion of violence for political gain" shot two Israeli Embassy staff outside of the Capital Jewish Museum, while shouting about 'Free Palestine'.

This time in Boulder, CO: six people in their 60s to 80s at a walk to remember the remaining hostages held by Hamas were the victims of 'targeted violence' by an individual using 'a makeshift flamethrower and molotov cocktails'.

Again, suspect in custody reportedly shouting 'Free Palestine' and 'End Zionism' during the attack, and is being called a terrorist action by the FBI per the reporting. (still breaking so details can change)
