The role-play is officially live!

(But we are still recruiting!)

Current GMS: Blissy & November Bleeds. Please contact us for any further questions.

Concept

Mosswood is a survival horror role-play / interactive story, that takes place at some point in the modern era. The game, being a mostly free-form system, with some unique prompting and dice mechanics, is run by both characters and the environment, in which players choose on how to interact with, ultimately deciding what sort of experience their character will be subjected too. Psychological and survival horror elements are both key within this game. Exploration is encouraged, as well as establishing and developing relationships with fellow players in character. Mosswood is a blend of wonderful horror/adventure & mystery for you to explore! Within the open world environment, players are given the chance to explore, establish relationships, and push their own personal stories, as well as survive as a group against threats that prove a formidable challenge for them to overcome, through various forms and dynamic scenarios. There is a large focus on characters, their social relationships and the choices they may make going forward. Choice games as a whole have greatly influenced Mosswood, and depending on the choices your character will make, it will determine the cause and effect of how their actions proceed. Will your character escape the town, or will they die at the hands of a manifestation, sacrifice themselves to a greater cause, or endure to a glorious end, or simply lose themselves along the way? All things are possible in Mosswood, depending on how you as a player choose to play the game. Supernatural incantations, and compelling obstacles are not the only hindrances lurking within the town however.

We are searching for players who are interested in being invested, as well as immersed within this sort of world, who are looking to not only work on their own story, but help the whole story push forward as well.

Mosswood Re-edition Synopsis

So what is Mosswood 'The Re-edition'? Mosswood, formerly known as Deadwood (up until quite recently) is and was the same game it has always been. A survival horror group game catering to the idea of exploration and character development. Now in it's 'Re-edition' state, the game has been entirely cleared of all events, characters, information and former depth, it has experienced through a multitude of smaller attempts, and old editions, that made the game both a critical success and short of success in other forms. Strictly speaking the re-edition is an entirely fresh take on the Mosswood universe, and is open to public involvement. That said, the original game did run just over a year ago. All events and threads relating to older editions of the game have been entirely revoked. It's crucial I share this with any players who might be potentially involved in tackling the game, due to the game being in 'Big Game Status' for well over a year. To be entirely clear and short of word, this run of the game is entirely unrelated to anything formerly established in previous 'Deadwood' adventures. So with that said, I take you to the pitch of our game.

Working from our original base, this game takes place in a fictional region known as 'Mossdale', existing somewhere in Oregon USA. Mossdale is a strange little region of land, paved in a mysterious history and cryptic rumors. It is a mostly swampy reserved portion of land, where an old estranged town known as 'Deadwood' resides in decomposing reserve. The town has quite the elaborate and unsettling history, and has been known to be a hot spot for strange paranormal activity. Some even claim the preternatural spirits that are rumored to reside here are of the vengeful sort, and the land itself is entirely cursed for reasons connected to the strange town. Many traveling through Mossdale have gone missing. Despite this, Mossdale offers some of the best resort locations. Your character is someone from a private schooling academy just off the border of Mossdale. They have been invited to a party by a local celebrity student of sorts that attends the school. Your weekend starts with you arriving at the designated location, for a long weekend get-away at a private and quite luxurious lodge in Mossdale. It's there that they believe they will spend a pleasant get away weekend among some peers that may be known, or mostly unbeknownst to them.

Only the turn out of this weekend will prove be quite a big deal different, then they might place their feeble hopes on too..

Horror Elements in Mosswood

This is a highly horror focused role-play and with that said our goal here is to generate horrific and unsettling atmospheres, to really bring life to the world and characters we have made here.

This is not a gore focused role-play where our aim is to butcher or bring gruesome fatality to the characters involved. The fate of your character is very much in your hands, as the GM's here will only aim to provide challenges and obstacles for your character to overcome. In the event you may choose to bring something traumatic to your character, you retain the full right as a player, just please notify GM's. Your decisions will determine your characters future and if careless actions are made, than there will be negative circumstances. Please take the game seriously. Deadwood, and Mossdale are both locations with monsters and nightmares, comedy is not something we are looking to focus on in the plot. This is also NOT a mock slasher game. If your character does something ridiculous, there will be a penalty. This also means no one's character is safe from an unfortunate fate, that also includes GM'd characters. The goal here is not to kill characters, but to focus on the horrors they may face, and test their ability to survive, adapt, and face their fears.

Deadwood, and the surrounding region, is place of many mysteries and secrets to be unfolded. The town will be mapped out and key locations will be provided through further expansion at a “Lore” thread, for those of you who wish to read into more. Players have the ability to interact and explore with the sandbox world we have created, but may their roaming make them wary of the dangers that may follow in close footsteps behind them. Within deadwood there are a number of entities that may manifest themselves in various places throughout the town, be it random, or triggered. Each entity is specific to their role and point of origin in the lore and has a set purpose. Only limited information about these entities will be released, given we want players to venture, discover, and explore the world we have created here. Further details on noted sightings will be recorded as they occur.

We are aiming to set a focus on inner fears and phobias with the role-play. Our goal is to push these characters to their limits, while they further discover the choices they may need to make to survive. We also follow an interactive story base here. This game is not entirely sandbox, but contains a very flexible sandbox exploration sort of element too it. We are familiar with this formula and know it's one that works well to accommodate the idea of multitude of smaller stories, endeavors, and character experiences, amounting to one overall great mastermind of horrific exploration and adventure.

The Story Behind Deadwood (In case your curious)
Deadwood Lore & Timeline

-1766. The colony of “Privilege” was established by small group of settlers from eastern Europe. This colony was unlike most English colonies surrounding it and was composed of settlers outside the influence of England. To others the establishing of the colony remained totally unmarked in history and even from the first days of establishing the colony that later became a town, early cartographers couldn't quite pin point the exact location of the colonies existence. To these early settlers the experience of traversing the sea to what they thought to be an English colony took them to somewhere else entirely. They weren't sure where they ended up, but the land seemed paved in wild flowers of a crimson shade, that differed from a rose, as well as moss growing in unusual places and stretching further then the woods. No one knew where these strange flowers of beauty came from, only knowing that they seemed to bloom heavily in the spring, fall and vanish entirely in the summer and winter.

Despite the oddities in geographical explanation, the colony thrived and was built up from the ground by the settlers from across the sea. These people felt lost in an anomaly they couldn't explain but despite their attempts to retrace their steps they were unable to leave the general land of the town. Some sailors even vanished trying to traverse their way through the waters that had brought them here. Naturally this unexpected inconsistency with providing logic to land the people could not leave, became the spark of a high rise in faith. Most of the more rich and influential figures in the town started to believe that the town itself was a sanctuary, a place only to be found by those worthy of its phenomenon. This belief began to spread like a plague throughout the town, as the rich and powerful influence of the towns structure began to pave a new chapter in the town of “Privilege”.

Quickly this new belief turned into a bizarre religion as the people of the town began to make amends to their own faith. The idea of this place being a blessing and not a curse, quickly become the common subject of belief, as the town began distinguish itself from the outside world. Eventually this faith turned radical and would lead the town into internal turmoil with itself and extremists would come to surface. Those who thought outside the common faith of the people were off'd as “Sinners” people that were unworthy and unthankful for the blessing of being a citizen of the town. From this came the conflict opposing the faith and the town began to take its first dark turn into conceited spiritual practices.

The town began to turn on itself as families were torn apart. Laws were broken and nothing more then supreme conviction became the new law of the land. In this act a number of burnings took place and many people were slaughtered due their indifference in perception of what the town was a whole. On one night in particular a series of mass burnings took place to resolve the growing conflict of “Sinners” who stood outside the faith and situation took a rather unexpected turn. In the faithfuls maddened pyre of conviction, the fires of the town burned to high and to far and the entire town was believed to have burned down, leaving nothing more then ashes of a history that would never truly be learned.

-1866. Nearly a hundred years later a mysterious town baring no name nor know history seemed to surface somewhere in midst of America. When investigated by various historians they could find no means of record of the town ever existing. The oddest thing was the town itself was entirely intact and unvisited by the presence of others, not even baring a name to it's mystery. People had many speculations of what the mysterious town was and where it had come from but nobody could truly provide answer to its story. During this time the American government was seeking to build new towns in core of its country, to expand income and living space. After brief investigation of the town it was decided by the government to be used as a temporary town. A few minor adjustments were made at this point in history, but for the most part things were steady, though not everything was at it seemed.

Not any longer then several weeks into the towns growth, some people claimed to see things, hear things and there were numerous reports of rotting wood, caused by the unusual flowers and moss, that acted as façade to the oddities taking place around the town. What was even more disturbing was some accounts of citizens living in the town saying they smelt the scent of burning flesh come and go throughout the town, but could never put a reason as to why. It was at this time that the name “Deadwood” was given to the town, due to the smell of rotting wood that was often associated with the next to poor and moderate living conditions, and peculiar deficiency among forestation of the wood.

Eventually the ambiance of the town became more then just plain simple unease as slowly reports of people claiming to see things or hear things that they couldn't explain, began to flood those in control of managing the town. The government ignored these rumors under the premise that demolishing the town and moving the citizens would be too costly. Soon after these complaints the situation worsened. Slowly people started to change, claims of people loosing their minds in the town became common stories of weekly news. The government blamed the living conditions of the city, not deciding to take any further investigation into the the matter and wouldn't bring themselves to believe that the town itself was doing something to the people within it.

The erratic behavior continued and quickly the town became a cease pit for what was known as mental insanity. Very few people remained uneffected by the towns influence and those that did were lucky enough to leave before the town itself turned into one giant town for the mentally ill. The idea of using the town as a large scale unofficial asylum then surfaced and those left within the town became know as its first “patients” in 1869.

-1939. Come the start of a war brewing over seas and a great depression, came a time of great hardship for Deadwood. The town itself had remained as what it had been tested to be, a grand scale asylum existing in the form of a town. At this time Deadwood saw a bit of a slight decline in its abnormal populace. People there were still quite strange but also not driven completely mad, well at least not on the surface. The town itself became what appeared to be a regular small town to the naked eye but deep down this town would always bare secrets. The people there were a quiet small minded folk, strange but simple and stuck to their daily principles of living. There was no one set religion nor code to follow in the town but people stayed within general living. At this point the government assumed that the town itself had recovered from whatever bizarre unexplained mental decline that had taken part many years prior.

The town stayed remote, most people from it never desiring the will nor reason to leave. Oddly enough they loved the town and couldn't part from it. Some said it made them feel very much “at ease with their inner auras”. The premise of this statement truthfully came in the form of conundrum. The town of Deadwood had really never changed and deep down inside the people here were both equally as bizarre and disturbed as their great ancestry. Unlike the settlers or citizens that came here before them, these people were born into this melancholy existence and they were never even aware that it was eating away at them inside. At this time Deadwood saw a very small shift of populace growth, a few people from outside its walls coming to live within it, in hopes of finding a quiet little place to live. Unknown to them they were willing subjecting themselves to a invisible threat that would change them just as it had the others around them and the people before them.

-2015. Deadwood is abandoned, having not seen the presence of company since the early nineteen fifties. No one knows why all the people in the town vanished, but there are plenty of scary stories and rumors to tell over a camp fire. Some say the town was never truly inhabited at all, the idea of that being an elaborate hoax or spooky story to tell. Others think there is a truth about Deadwood that is insecure of baring titles to any form of truths. These days no one goes there, strictly out of old superstitious and the fact that the town itself is blocked off from the forest that surrounds it. No further legal documentation of the towns status has been record for the last sixty five years and now the town sits in quiet slumber awaiting its next visitors.

Other Rules & Anything Else

[Aside from Elliquiy's rules, these are few of our expectations]

We are looking for a maximum of four to five new writers who might be interested in exploring Mosswood's game concept. At this time we are looking for only four or five newbies to tag along and become involved in the group game. The games pace will start out with a sort of 'calm before the storm', giving players time to get settled, familiar with our systems, and capable of reaching out to other players both ICLY and OOCLY, to help them organize and prepare for the conflicts that lie ahead within the game.

We are searching for players who can write two/three or more paragraphs (or roughly 400 words) per post. We value decent post size, enough for other players to work off.

We expect any player registering (because you must apply by the show of interest in our interest check, and the filling out of a character profile) to be present enough to post at least within a three day time frame. There is no maximum of posts one may write, but we are preferable to keeping our game moving at a fair pace that can accommodate everyone's muse.

We do use a few prompts / a loose system here. There's further explanation on that in our General Game Information Thread . Our prompt system exists to spotlight players in dynamic scenarios, be they dangerous, heroic, or something less clear of reward. This system also bridges over to the idea of the players being able to request interaction with an environment of any kind, at any time, to further give the player full immersion and benefit of the situations they may find themselves in. To summarize this concept to most simplistic of explanation, everything written in red is indicating of danger to some extent or form. Most prompts are red in text if related to danger. We have many examples we may show you on request, or if you may pursue the understanding of this on your own, you may look here for further information on our prompt system, weapon rules and management, and the benefit of the 'player investigation' prompt. Our end game is to give the player the utmost freedom we can to tackle a potentially dangerous, or risky situation, and make your experience in the Mosswood universe both effective and enjoyable.

Mosswood is not a sex driven game. There may be smaller inclusions of sexual content within, but the central focus of the game is plot.

We are LGBTTQA+ Positive here. Play off any type of sexuality or identity.

Know you are getting into a survival RP. Understand that YC may or may not die during this.

Please try your best to get along with the next person. Leave the drama for RP, not OOC.

Do not god-mode another players character without first asking them. Writing things such as “would try to...” or “would attempt to...” are acceptable. They are requesting a response from another player. Writing things such as "grabs her hand and drags her out" - are not acceptable unless you received the players permission. GM's -when necessary- are the only individuals who may physically move or harm others characters. That's not to say our characters playing alongside yours (other college students) will god-mode: no. We will follow the rules as well.

~Any further rules or concepts will be added as they occur.

Mosswood Frequently Asked Important Questions

Please Read!

Click here to read the FAQ's!

Question: Where do I submit my profile application?

Answer: Please submit them to both Blissy & November Bleeds.

Question: I have my character ready- where do I start?

Answer: Once your character has been approved by the GM's, your character is welcome to arrive at the lodge. Remember, they are a student from a local College in Oregon. A popular student by the name of Mark Gall has invited YC specifically to arrive- so please keep this in mind with your post. Mark is a stereotyped jock who plays football and isn't the nicest person around- but he is popular due to his good looks and money.

Question: What if I do not have anyone to write to for my opening post?

Answer: Please message a GM and we'll see what we can do! If you post openly however, we will see to somebody potentially approaching YC. We are always happy to help by finding someone to RP with you or writing with you ourselves!

Question: In this group game, how is my character important?

Answer: All characters are vital to the storyline and will share their own spotlight.

Question: Why can't I post my character at multiple times?

Answer: Mosswood is a storyline based RP. Thus, we have a storyline and time changes to follow along. We will create a GM post when it has gone from -Afternoon- to -Evening-, thus everyone's characters will follow in suit. Once a time change is made, characters cannot go back to the Afternoon. As GM's we want to make sure everyone has had the chance to role-play their scenes out accordingly.

Question: How many characters can I create?

Answer: If you are a first-timer in the Mosswood universe, we recommend you start with One character. Maximum, two.

Question: What happens to my character if I drop out?

Answer: Once you fill out a character application, there is a Disclaimer at the very bottom that states Your Character becomes ours. That usually means we will kill them off, not control them.

Question: What happens if I disappear?

Answer: We wait a maximum of 7 days (one week) without hearing anything from you. From there, your character will either fade into the background (depending on where we are in the RP), or if it is during a vital/important moment, we will have to cut the cord, sorry.

Question: What can my character bring?

Answer: Your character may carry a maximum of two important items on them (matches, flashlight, phone, pocket knife, batteries, medical kit, baseball bat, or something relevant to your character). Think of your character being trapped on a deserted island- what would you want them to bring?

Question: Will my character die?

Answer: That all depends on your character and their decisions throughout the story. We will never tell you what the right and wrong answers are. This is your characters choice to make going forward. In the event there is danger, the GM's offer choices. It is horror after all, no one is safe, but we will not just strike down your character without giving them quite a few chances.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send a message to either Blissy or November Bleeds!

Keep... feeling... tempted... :P ;)   >:)

;) It's tempting I know. That's why you need to give into temptation.

And hello once again. I believe you've briefly taken part in a group game with us before. We'd love to have you on board for this game as well.

Amarlo

I'm tempted as well. I've had this bookmarked for a while now, been keeping an eye on it. I just don't know how feasible it is for me right now. >< Although the fact that Ink is showing interest in it totally makes it all the more tempting... Dammit Ink! :P

*Edit: Where can I find the character and ooc threads? Or am I just blind? (It is quite possible!) Omg, I am a derp!

Very glad to hear it! Not to worry though, take your time if you need to (on deciding of course!)

We are currently still placing up the Character Thread (Edit: We are aiming to have it up within the next couple of days). Originally, the game was only between a few, but we opened it up to more so our own character sheets are behind. We will be sure to link that as soon as possible! OOC Thread is here, if you would like to take a look (although there isn't much right now). Here is the IC thread, if you'd like to take a peek as well!

I would suggest reading through the FAQ's if you can and haven't already. :)
