Excited for this!  Still not sure what character concept that I want to use. 

I'm assuming that given Japan's draconian laws on guns, we should generally avoid those as possessions for our characters.

Correct. Having a gun of any type is a big no no. Unless you have a damn good reason and even then.

You can get permits here, but it is very strict. My son had to get a license just for his air rifle when he was doing Olympic Rifle Shooting. He has to keep the gun locked up and the police come to check on it every two weeks. You can also get a hunting license but that is even more strict.

I’ve lived here Yokohama/Yokosuka area for over 20 years and been to Hakone several times so if anyone has any questions I’d be glad to answer them if I can.

Oo, I have lots of questions, but they'd be just for my own curiosity and probably not something that would help with the game If you don't mind me asking, how did you end up living there (unless you were born there)?

By the way, Arcanist, what time of year would the game take place? Is the ryokan packed, or is it pretty much just our investigators staying there (perhaps outside the usual bank holidays)? Is it a super remote location or close to a town?

It would be early Fall 2017. So September. The temperature is slowly turning cold. Most of the leaves have turn orange and fallen, so it’s that in between period. But parts of hakone is still pretty like that.
The Ryokan is not packed, as parts of it is closed for renovations. It is at half capacity. It is getting ready for the winter rush. It is up Mt Hakone.

Hakone is located in the mountains in the far west of the prefecture, on the eastern side of Hakone Pass. Most of the town is within the borders of the volcanically active Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, centered on Lake Ashi.

Although Hakone tends to be busy, it’s been surprisingly quiet. Maybe just an off season. Hence cheaper accomodation, especially with the renovations, hence the draw to the normally expensive ryokan.

Haha, I mean, I just felt a Japanese-themed "hentai-esque" horror game just has to have the token schoolgirl in it! She's probably going to need to find a whole new side of herself to survive or be useful though... I can't even come up with any particularly useful equipment she would have realistically brought with her!

Maybe I should have at least made her a member of the kendo club or something, but, oh well.

The truth is that unless you go military or survivalist, a lot of modern people just don't have those kinds of skills.  We'll see how it goes!

Well, if you are looking to play a Japanese investigator. The lack of firearms skills and some “military based” skills is definately lacking. But it is very hard to get hold of firearms in Japan. Unless of course you are a criminal. But even then.

Actors have two skills they pick and choose. Action characters could potentially adjust their profession skills.

Then there are personal interest skills.

I will generally adjust your attributes with a 1d10. So might be easier if you send me the attributes first and the E dice rolls. Therefore, you don't have to adjust other factors that depend on the attributes such as skills.

I actually love the "author seeking inspiration" module, is that taken or can I run with it?
Probably 21-25 years old male, post military service (with zero interest in pursuing a career in military or security), a writer by passion seeking to find his "niche".

So mental primary, physical secondary character, prickly and proud, probably comes from money (just so he won't starve to death in Japan). Will probably include a dark secret or two.

How does that sound?

Yes, a foreigner in Japan, I was thinking the son of a private army contractor, his father ex-Mossad, mother died when he was young so he had to move a lot wherever his father's company took him. Lots of home-schooling, constant uprooting, multilingual and highly intelligent. Took the Israeli draft when he came of age to spite his father, which worked but also was quite a shock for someone that was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and raised in relative isolation. His military service was a real cultural shock of the truly humbling kind, and while he did well, he also didn't, because he's rebellious and critical by nature. That was a far too high price to pay to piss dad off and he got out of there as fast as he possibly could (3-4 years).

As far as the dark secret, not sure yet, probably something lascivious or criminal. Probably fucked/lusted after/killed someone he shouldn't have. Maybe all of the above!
