I am glad some Republican lawmakers are finally seeing the truth about our problem with mass shootings.

State Rep. Candice Keller (Ohio) wrote down a list of what is wrong.

This actually has historical precedent. I posted in the pinned Right-Wing Violence thread how the El Paso shooter lifted entire quotes from Carlson and others, but white supremacists have for decades maintained that 'real racism' was their forebears who they are more enlightened than.

In the 1960s, white segregationists in the Jim Crow South really only saw Nazis and open genocide as racist, given the relative recency of WW2. By their standards, you could only be racist if you were actively calling for the deaths of every black man, woman, and child in the South. Everything less than that, from phrenology to lynchings, could not be racist. In fact, if and when white people in the South used the word "racist" (which itself was gaining more common use due to Civil Rights demonstrators), they almost always contextualized it in regards to European anti-Semitism.

I also saw a similar line of logic in another thread on the subreddit in regards to Rhodesia. I could not find the link, but it was an old black and white photo of black and white college students sitting together at a lunch counter at a university. Many proponents of Apartheid in South Africa and Rhodesia did not define themselves as racist, claiming all manner of other reasons why black people were barred from facilities. "We only ban the ones who smell bad," "the 90-95% black population is actually a tiny minority," "people of different skin tones have an inborn desire to isolate themselves into their own societies and economies even if living side by side," and so on and so forth.

In 30 to 50 years time, I guarantee you that the conservatives of the future will point to Tucker Carlson as unenlightened and a bigot, while claiming that their own bigotries of their own time and place is different because reasons.

Many theorize he does this on purpose, particularly when a liberal or leftist is talking. Even if what they're saying is rational or centrist, Carlson does a facial expression like someone watching a dog owner eat out of their own pet's bowl. This is to give the impression that his opponent is saying something completely nuts for those just tuning in, or for his fans to think "if good ol' Tuck thinks this sounds ridiculous then there may be something to it."

It is now being reported one of the victims of the Dayton mass shooting was not the shooter's sister but instead a brother, and was a transgender man. It is still being figured out as the family do not wish to comment on this but seemingly social media accounts belonging to the victim indicate he was a transgender man, along with testimonies of friends. Friends stated he was not out to his family but that his brother knew, and that he tweeted at his brother.

Hundreds of thousands of bees were caught in a death trap at a candy factory in Sweden. Some jerk had unscrewed the lids of a few large vats of syrupy paste that stood on the ground outside the factory, and when local hive bees caught the scent of hot sugar, they started flying in. But once they had got down to the surface, the slimy mass stuck on their wings and locked them down. Now, bees who are travelling to a place where there's food around send out a kind of call, so even as they were approaching the vats, they were relaying the calls from earlier bees who had already come there - and so, more and more bees got bogged down in the sugary deep, and this went on all night and some way into the next day. 

Apparently, bees don't have a powerful "keep away!!" signal, although they do have a language of sorts...When the county bee inspector (yes) was called to the scene, he was appalled; he ytried to disengage some of the bees and use a high-powered shower to free them from the slime, but ultimately they had to give in and accept that most of the bees were already dead or dying. The factory have notified the police to try to find the vandal who removed the lids from the syrupy containers. 

This is a depressing story, especially because bees are being hit hard by diseases already.

The house of an interacial couple was burned and damaged and is said to have exploded. Nobody was in the home at the time as it was undergoing renovations, police at the scene of the crime found swastikas and racist messages. They are investigating it as a possible hate crime.

The third article is about a different couple - one in Alabama.  The only physical damage there was spray-paint on a sign.

As for the Ohio situation - I wouldn't be surprised if them being gone from the house was intentional on the part of the arsonist.

1) No one home means no one can catch the fire when it's small.
2) No one home means fewer people to potentially see the perpetrator.
3) No one home means no risk of the crime upgrading to felony murder.

All of these are purely considerations of 'self interest,' assuming number 3 was considered at all.

Oh whoops, I did not actually realize I even included that one I thought I had deleted it when I was collecting a couple of different reports about it and saw it clearly say Alabama. I'm always putting everything I do and post and say everywhere under such extreme scrutiny researching as much as I can anything I share and it feels so stupid when I make a mistake like that. Being under constant hyper scrutiny sucks, though you weren't doing that to me I just mean in general, this was a very obvious error I should have caught.

The Daily Beast got an interview with the person who tricked the far right website Quillette into publishing their fake story full of ridiculous falsehoods. Though ironically enough, I have to question if this might not even be another person playing a trick. It sounds believable but with how it is written, it's not that The Daily Beast is protecting their identity but rather were not given any identifiable information at all. Quillette did get very obviously tricked but I always wonder in these situations just how much chaos and tricks someone might be playing.

I can understand deciding to do that for the sake of shoppers who might want to not think about the mass shooting, and who are scared. We did have that reported incident of a panic in New York City because a vehicle backfired. Walking around a Walmart while hearing gunfire and screams or seeing on the screens gun violence might be a bit anxiety inducing at the moment. However this move would be more meaningful if they weren't still selling and advertising guns.
