maybe he was not on caravan defence at all maybe teft was independantly tracking down the bandits as they have been a problem for a while.

And found them when they found  the caravan and sprang to its defence unexpectedly, killed off many bandits but still has a duty to bring them to justice or be killed - dead or alive - and will recieve a bounty / reward from the merchants guild if he rids the world of them. The caravan owners want the missing cargo and will give us a reward for recieving it, and teft offers to share his reward for taking down the  banits too if  we help him.

That might be an interesting twist on the story, though perhaps he was tailing them, looking for an opportunity to get his man, rather than planning to take on the whole group by himself - an opportunity the attack on the caravan presented. After that it'd only be natural to join the caravan till the next town. Beyond that, I guess Camila must have been really convincing in talking him into accompanying the rest of you.

I'm ok with Camila convincing Teft to join the group. :)  Since Camila is addicted to sex I'm thinking this could have been Camila's idea and then she could have convinced Marcus that it is a good plan to have Teft join them since he is a strong warrior that they could use.
