What's the setting? Stuff taking place in a town is going to be very different to that in a forest or a dungeon. If you give us some specifics of the current setting, relevent background plot points, bad guy NPCs and what have you, we might be able to offer a few ideas.
The setting is a fantasy world at an approximately Renaissance/Cavalier period tech level, sans gunpowder, but with better knowledge of biology and healing techniques. Where isn't really germane; the party will be travelling over land and sea, through many different terrains, and passing through towns en route to reach a total of five dungeons.
The premise, in brief, an insane god has essentially taken a world hostage; he created a barrier to keep the rest of the pantheon from having any influence in the world (no spells granted, minimal communication). Any one of the other eleven gods could break the barrier easily, but the power is focussed inward, and in so doing, the world itself would be destroyed; it must be taken down from underneath. Now in the many years since the barrier was erected, arcane magic has advanced sufficiently that certain very powerful magi can destroy the orbs which form the network from which the power radiates (by rough analogy, if you destroy all the DNS servers, you can take down the internet).
It is essential that action be taken immediately; a second threat is approaching, one that requires the eleven sane and benevolent gods to have full agency. One orb has been destroyed; there are five more. Through that single breach the sane eleven are putting enormous pressure on their mad compeer, significantly reducing his ability to smite the upstart mortals who are challenging him, but he can still compel others to do his bidding.
So, really, all ideas are welcome; I have monsters (including outraged mobs of believers) more-or-less covered, but I'm sorely lacking in the tricks and traps department.
