The Wikipedia article on "Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission" and the link to the Supreme Court's Opinion:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masterpiece_Cakeshop_v._Colorado_Civil_Rights_Commission#Opinion_of_the_Court

The Supreme Court ruling was narrowly aimed at the behavior of the Colorado Civil Rights Commission that it found acted with religious bias against Masterpiece Cakeshop and its owner's religious beliefs in comparison to similar cases. The court did not in fact support a baker or any other service provider or artisan's right to refuse service on the grounds of religious belief. It was effectively a legal "punt"!

I think by using the descriptive narrow they are referring to the reason for the ruling as opposed to a broader interpretation.  They are limiting the impact of the ruling to the very specific judgments as handed down by the Colorado court rather than judging that all LGBTQ requests of this nature be respected.

Future cases are not impacted by this ruling.

Ah, I see what you mean by the word 'narrow' now. Sometimes I get too caught up in a word's more literal definition and don't think of other ways it can apply. Thank you. :)

And yes, that was also my general understanding of how the ruling played out.
"I still see you when the lights get low, I still hear you when I'm on my own

This one's for you and your problems, your good day job. Your bad karma, what are you afraid of?
The same trauma, show me what you're made of.."

Please don't. It's not your fault other people feign devotion to your faith to hurt people. All you can do is continue to be the good person we know you to be to show everyone the real face of who you are so that people know. It is always nice seeing a real Christian weigh in and condemn these false ones though, I'm glad you said something. =)

Quote from: Beguile's Mistress on July 30, 2018, 12:18:25 PMDidn't it come out during the legal proceedings that the same sex couple targeted this baker deliberately rather than look for a baker that was more amenable to their situation and thus the reason for the Supreme Court decision in the baker's favor?

That did come out during the proceedings (or at least that's when most of it heard it) but as I understand it had nothing to do with the legal ruling. Sure didn't help in the court of popular opinion though.

The way it was explained to me was that because the Colorado agency screwed something up they were essentially giving it back to them to do it the right way, so not even really making much of a ruling on anything that would affect anywhere else. Even the summaries I read didn't make a ton of sense to me though I will admit, sort of seems like they didn't resolve anything.

Yeah, unfortunatly people don't quite considers sexual orientation equal to race in that reguard. I doubt many people would consider less of a black couple ofr deliberatly choosing a baker who refused to make them a cake as a way of demonstrating a point, than just finding another baker willing to accept them.

Quotedifferent types of Bigfoot believers — among them those who hold that Bigfoot might be able to use “psychic terror vibes” against its victims “to make you run through the woods and crash into the trees,” permitting Bigfoot to forcibly impregnate them — and said that he was proud to have fought for the rights of all Americans to believe “in whatever Bigfoot they want,” even, for example, a gluten-intolerant Bigfoot.

This guy sounds awesome. If anyone out there is a one-issue Bigfoot voter I think he's got them in his corner.

When I first heard of the idea of 3-D.printed handguns I thought it sounded nutty: how can adding thin sheets of pulver-like metal fabric result in anything strong enough to contain the energy of a bullet being fired?? But I figure it actually can work. :( And yes, this wiould be disastrous for gun regulation.  :o

To quote something my father told me. "Security forces have to be right 100% of the time, every single time. A criminal, a terrorist, an assassin, only needs to be right once."

It doesn't even need to be fired multiple times. If the gun can be a single shot, or even worse, be like a flare gun but with a shotgun shell, it can still do a great deal of damage. All it takes is someone with the right equipment and a lot of patience.

After more than a month of steady heat and mostly scanty amounts of rain, Europe's heat record may be about to crack. The current record note is 48 C (=118.4 F; Athens, summer of 1977) but with a fresh burst of heat across most of the continent in the next few days, the forecasts are out that some parts of Spain and Portugal could pass aboce the fifty mark (past 122 F). Such temperatures are otherwise only seen, near European lands, in the Sahara.

On one hand everyone should be protected by and treated equally & fairly by the justice system; and it appears in this case, that the Judge acted with undue haste when processing Yaxley-Lennon so it's only right that the court looks at his case again. But it's Tommy fuckin Robinson, the guy is a racist scumbag and hate-monger of the highest order, so why can't MI5\6 arrange for death by natural causes and improve everyone's lives? Then I remember I'm a liberal.

Apparently on Tuesday (July 31st), a pair of thieves in Sweden stole three items from the crown jewels from a cathedral near Stockholm, and escaped via a speedboat on the lake beside said cathedral.

Kind of reminds me of the phrase "No one knows the bible better than the devil himself."

All these hate mongers know how to use their freedoms as best as they can to harm others while making it that the actions we wanna take would backfire on us if we set a bad precedent. *hopes that made sense*...sounded better in my head. :/

Well, quite. In a properly liberal mood, you can say that you can be judged by how you treat your enemies.
On the other hand, he can't be so convincingly anti-establishment if that same establishment falls over itself to protect his rights.

They're old regalia, yes, but not part of those crown jewels used in public in modern times (or at any time in the last three centuries). So it's not quite as if somebody had raided the vault in the Tower of London where the British crown jesels are on display.

The antiques value is super high of course, and it was a very daring heist - but these crowns, scepter etc are practically impossible to sell on the open market. Any serious antiques dealer or auction firm who's given them for a look would soon find out what items it is - and breaking out a few stones would be pointless.  So it's likely that the thieves will soon try to demand a ransom sum for the jewels...
