Alright, another question for you people with some actual WH40K experience :)

Question: how much terrain do you need for a board? And what kind of terrain?

I'm not giving up on my dream to play WH40K at home and I bought some terrain pieces recently. All of them are Mechanicus-style scenery: some human-high pipes, a few Mechanicus machinery pieces, two one-story ruined buildings. Is it enough? Do I need more for a 44 x 60 inches board? And do I need one of those really high buildings with two levels?

In other words, how does one design a WH40K battlefield?

So ya, you kinda need to be careful with this one and it will probably take a bit of trial and error. Too little terrain will favour shooty armies, while shit tons of obscuring terrain will unfairly favour melee armies. And there is a difference between light terrain, dense terrain, and terrain that will be considered LoS blocking. You generally look for a healthy mix of the three.

there is actually a warhammer community article from a while back where they talked about how they set up terrain at their own grand tournaments and provide 2 example layouts https://www.warhammer-community.com/2021/06/29/metawatch-warhammer-40000-building-beautiful-balanced-battlefields-for-grand-tournament-play/ these two that they show off are pretty balanced ways to set up a board, some people might try that set ups like these are too stilted and lack imagination, but they are also fair. Heavily skewed setups to facilitate crazy but specific narrative ideas are cool, but rarely well balanced and useless outside of the specific narrative for which it was designed.

Other websites like Goonhammer and glasshammer have talked about terrain layout and reccomended setups as well.

So it is Darktide beta weekend, first time I managed to play it.

Somehow they manage to hit a lot of itches and niches in their games with very simple tools... so simple it seems almost surreal nobody has done it before.

I am loving the toughness system (you have "toughness" on top of health as a sort of armor. Through certain actions it recharges even in combat.) and while the environments are not "pretty", they seem fairly unique as you go onwards.

Did anybody else play?

Haven't had the time to sign up for the beta, so just waiting for it to launch :) looks pretty good though, love what I've seen of the character creator and the voice acting.

So, talking about the table setup... Here's what I got so far:

Not sure if it's enough or not? I played Infinity last weekend and this kind of setup would definitely *not* work for that game. But Infinity is a very tactical, X-COM-esque game - I'm not sure what a game like WH40K needs?

Numerion

I would personally add at least one more vision blocking terrain and at least two smaller ones. You want things to maneuver around and to hide, to block objectives and so on.

I have one more terrain expansion set unassembled, with two more small buildings and one machinery piece. I guess I could also add some AoS terrain? Like a pizza-sized elevated dais etc.

I wonder what counts as vision-blocking terrain? The landing pad is 5 cm tall, it kind of blocks the vision for human-sized models?

BTW. Can vehicles move over pipes, flat elevated terrain etc.? I'm afraid to add too much terrain, as I'm not sure if it could cause the vehicles to be unable to maneuver?

Numerion

I am not 100% sure about the 40k ruling but in warcry it was like this

Any terrain lower than half an inch can be ignored for movement (but may play a role in blocking "perfect" placement of models).

As far as vision-blocking terrain: with how the rules work, if you see any piece of a model (even through a building) you may fire on it. Vision blocking terrain is terrain which blocks vision (and therefore targeting) even if technically you can see through it. And it works vertically as well (so a flying model that can be seen above the terrain cannot be shot at)

The middle piece you have, I'd label that as vision blocking.  I'd add one more, possibly thinner to allow more maneuvering. The purpose is to let melee armies some wiggle room and not be shot off the table instantly.

This is a an official site with terrain recommendation setup.  As you can see, these setups are so full that adding another piece of the "larger terrain" is almost impossible. Hell I'd say it's too empty but then I am verging on the more extreme side regarding this.

Welcome to the 8th Legion, brother. If you haven't already done so, immediately pick up ABDs Night Lords trilogy, and enjoy.

Nice I will have to check that out... got the model of Jugo coming in November and Curze as a Christmas gift... between now and then it is all about learning rules and maybe picking up a Leviathen because dreads seem to be the big thing when it comes to 30k. However I have to say when it comes to Night Lords they are all about fast moving infantry.

My primary guy I play against is Iron Hands... so it is a matter of us running circles around him and bitch slapping in melee... verses dreads that will be a nightmare to shift.

You mean Sevetar? No idea how he plays on the table, but an absolutely fantastic character in the stories.

Leviathans are a bit hit-and-miss on the table at the moment. I can't say much, I've only played a handful of games of 30K. Some people have good luck with them, others not so much. I think it depends on how you play them.
Things have been pretty bad for me, which is why I've been away from the website.

Right now from what I hear in 30k... the dreads are OP in general. At least that has been the experience of my local meta, but I will just have to see. Hoping that is not too much the case because I am the kind of player who does like his fluff of being able to throw everything out there.

AngelsSonata

Well, it was rumoured Guilliman favoured the Aeldari, but maybe the Drukhari are more his preference.

If I ever had to be reincarnated into the universe of 40K I would hope I'd be reincarnated as an ork. They seem to be the only ones having any fun.
If you're searching the lines for a point, well you've probably missed it; there was never anything there in the first place.

So, sometime last year I fell off 40K big-time. I sold most of my armies this summer, and until about last week I'd played all of approximately one game this year. Just wasn't thrilled with the state of the game. I've been getting back into it lately, though. I first tried to get into Eldar, but as much as I enjoy playing them, painting them is just . . . not fun to me. I decided instead to go with Adeptus Custodes for my army. I have experience with them, and they're easy to paint. Here you can see what they're looking like! I'm happy to report I've actually been having fun with the game. Custodes are definitely powerful right now, and suit my knuckle-headed playstyle.

Being an idiot, I decided with the new IG releases to live out my dream of having an IG army. So I've preordered the Cadia Stands box, and I'm committing to painting up an army. Which will definitely not be an infantry horde army (it's going to have a lot of tanks and support weapons!), but it's still going to be a challenge. Currently I'm looking forward to it, though! I'm more than a little worried they're going to be horrible to play against - that artillery they're bringing looks nasty to play against.

When it comes to my purchases, I just bought the Slaves to Darkness army box for AoS. :) These new Chaos Chosen are very nice - and it's great that there's an Ogroid *unit* now (until now, there were only two Ogroid heroes).

Oh, and the new Daemon Prince is a definite improvement! Although I really wish GW made a *female* DP model... Half of my StD heroes are females - so, in case they ascend in-game, why would they transform into a male daemon? Hmmm.

Coming back to WH40K stuff: GW revealed some new things yesterday. Including... this:

Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

I admit it's one of these "Shut up and take my money!!!" things for me... It's awesome.

There were some more reveals, including new World Eaters models. Not an army I'd buy, but... I like the WE-aligned *mortal* berserkers. They even have female models for these! :) I wonder if it'll be possible to bring them into a general CSM army...
