Connecting to the chat using mIRC
« on: December 01, 2007, 09:29:45 PM »
As some might know, this forum also has a chatbox (besides the shoutbox), that's becoming more lively lately. This chatbox runs on an IRC protocol, which means that you can connect to it not only with the Chat function embedded in this forum, but also with the IRC client of your choice. That means you can use programs such as mIRC to connect. mIRC can be downloaded from http://www.mirc.com/ Here follows a small step by step tutorial to set mIRC up to connect to the chatbox. I'll probably add more useful tips later on.

The first you start mIRC, the mIRC Options screeen automatically appears. At a later time, this might not happen. In that case, you can access the mIRC Options screen by pressing Alt-O. Make sure you are on the Connect tab if you do so.

Enter the following details:

  Full Name: (Note, this can be viewed by other users! Can be fake.)

  Email Address: (Note, this can be viewed by other users! Can be fake.)

  Nickname: (The Nickname with which you would like to appear to other people. For the sake of convenience, make it identical or close to your accountname here on the forum.)

  Alternative: (In case your Nickname is already taken, mIRC will try to use this as your Nickname instead.)

Go to Servers, and press Add. The Add Server screen appears.

Enter the following details: (make sure to copy the values exactly)

  Description: Random server

  IRC Server: irc.sorcery.net

  Group: SorceryNet

Press Add.

Press Select.

Go to Options.

Make sure the following flags are enabled:

  Connect on startup

  Reconnect on disconnection

Make sure the following flag is disabled:

  Pop up connect dialog on startup

Go back to Connect.

Press Connect.

The first time you connect, the mIRC Favorites screen automatically appears. At a later time, this might not happen. In that case, you can access the mIRC Favorites screen by pressing Alt-J.

Make sure the following flag is disabled:

  Pop up favorites on connect

Make sure the following flag is enabled:

  Enable join on connect

Press Add. The Add Channel screen appears.

Enter the following details: (make sure to copy the values exactly)

  Channel: #Elliquiy

Make sure the following flag is enabled:

  Join on connect

Press Add.

Select SorceryNet.

Press OK.

Press OK.

Press Add again to repeat the same procedure for other channels you'd always like to be in.

Press OK.

Most IRC Networks also have a service system to preserve your nickname, so that nobody else can impersonate you. Note that registering your nickname on Elliquiy has nothing to do with registering your nickname in the chat, as the services are not related.

To register your nickname, type the following:

/ns register YOURPASS YOUREMAIL
YOURPASS needs to be replaced by the password you would like to use in the chat. This should not be the password for your Elliquiy account or your email account!
YOUREMAIL needs to be replaced by an email. This is retreivable by other people and can be fake.

Make sure there are no spaces in front of the / sign!
Also, this registers your current nickname. Think about the nickname you want to register, before you register it.

Next time you log in, you can verify yourself with the following command:

/ns id YOURPASS

You can also do this automatically, if you use clients like mIRC.

Press Alt-O to return to the options screen.
Go to Options under Connect and click Perform.
Make sure enable perform on connect is enabled.
Press Add.
Select SorceryNet.
Press OK.
Under Network:, select SorceryNet.
Enter the following text in the text box:

nick YOURNICK
ns id PASSWORD

Press OK.
Press OK.

Now, every time you connect to SorceryNet, it should automatically identify you to your nickname.

There're other options other than mIRC.

X-Chat is one. Though you could look up on Wikipedia and find out which would be best for you by typing in IRC programs.

Or you could check out through here.

Find it annoying that IRC cuts off your messages? Use a cut script.
Note, scripts are not possible for the chat client.
For mIRC, do the following:

Copy the following script to your clipboard (select, Ctrl-C).
In mIRC, press Alt-R.
Click on Remote.
Paste the following script in the Remote text box (Ctrl-V).
Click OK.

Code: [Select]
on *:input:*: {
  var %text = ... .
  var %ini = 0
  var %loc = 1
  if ($left($1,1) != /) {
    while ($calc($len($1-) - %loc) > $calc(399 - %ini)) {
      var %count = $pos($mid($1-, %loc, $calc(397 - %ini)), $chr(32), 0)
      if %count == 0 {
        say $left(%text, %ini) $+ $mid($1-, %loc, $calc(397 - %ini)) $+ ...
        var %loc = $calc(%loc + 397 - %ini)
        var %ini = 3
      }
      else {
        var %pos = $pos($mid($1-, %loc, $calc(397 - %ini)), $chr(32), %count)
        say $left(%text, %ini) $+ $mid($1-, %loc, %pos) ...
        var %loc = $calc(%loc + %pos)
        var %ini = 4
      }
    }
    if (%loc > 1) {
      say $left(%text, %ini) $+ $right($1-, $calc(1 - %loc))
      halt
    }
  }
  elseif ($1 == /me) {
    while ($calc($len($2-) - %loc) > $calc(399 - %ini)) {
      var %count = $pos($mid($2-, %loc, $calc(397 - %ini)), $chr(32), 0)
      if %count == 0 {
        me $left(%text, %ini) $+ $mid($2-, %loc, $calc(397 - %ini)) $+ ...
        var %loc = $calc(%loc + 397 - %ini)
        var %ini = 3
      }
      else {
        var %pos = $pos($mid($2-, %loc, $calc(397 - %ini)), $chr(32), %count)
        me $left(%text, %ini) $+ $mid($2-, %loc, %pos) ...
        var %loc = $calc(%loc + %pos)
        var %ini = 4
      }
    }
    if (%loc > 1) {
      me $left(%text, %ini) $+ $right($2-, $calc(1 - %loc))
      halt
    }
  }
}
