Strangely and I have just watched that, then watched the second just in the very vague hope that it was just that school......we were dissapointed to find out that we were wrong.......*sighs*

I am afraid I don't see anything funny in this at all.....in fact I am now going to hang my head in shame and refuse to accept that I have anything whatsoever in common with those in the video.

LOL, the video's hilarious.  I think it points out the fact that all schools do are force-feed information that later gets regurgitated for tests.  There's no real learning process, there's no effort made to make students UNDERSTAND and absorb what they're being taught.

When your brain works similar to a text-based Search Engine (a la Google) to spit out information when its asked for, of course you're going to say stupid things when someone abuses a homophone.  Suffrage, Sufferage...who cares?  They both sound the same, are spelled similar...hell, if you Googled either word, you'd probably get pages that defined both incorrectly where someone typoed or simply can't spell.

That was just... stupid.

Of course half the time he just said "sign this petition" and then once they were signing said "this petition to end women's suffrage"

Still, I wanted to slap those girls.

I have to admit it was funny.

Of course, my mother raised me to read anything that I was to sign. I tell my kids the same. So, you get what you pay for.

Still, I agree that it does show that schools 'teach to the test' or at least where those girls go, they do, but that's a topic for the Religion and Politics section.

*sniff*  Do I smell a thread fork comming?

I'd agree with you on this one, though, National.

Probably. That's me, the person who forks threads!

As soon as I figure out exactly how I want to word it. I live in one of those states that has Standards of Learning type curriculums, and I have two kids in Public Schools, so I know exactly what's involved.

Jefepato

Some guys did that at my high school.  They got about a dozen girls to sign before they ran into someone who knew what "suffrage" meant, whereupon there was a great deal of shouting.

Of course, it's pretty easy to get to high-school age without ever having encountered that word, but if you don't recognize a word, you should look it up before signing anything.

The second video was of a lad in a supermarket asking women, the result was the same , if not worse.

It just goes to show how easy auto suggestion is and how easy people are to fool.

Hell even a guy signed it at the end, not because he wanted women not to have the vote, he thought suffrage was about domestic violence.

Which reinforces the point that you really should read anything and everything that you affix your signature to.

Elvi

Of course but the main thing is that you should actually understand everything that you put your name to.
If you read suffrage and see it as suffering, then it doesn't matter how many times you look at it and read it.

Very true, very true. So what we should aspire to, and to teach others, is to make sure that you read and understand what you sign!

Elvi

*Nods*

I asked my 11 year old last night what suffrage was, she said "It was what those women did to get the vote".
So I asked her if she would sign a petition to end suffrage and she looked at me all confused and asked me wouldn't that mean we wouldn't have the vote?

Now she didn't quite know the meaning of suffrage, but she had the right idea.

Dang tricky language.

Also, I couldn't resist this- " Stick a fork in this thread, it's done!" But yeah, that's rather depressing, but eh.
