Trapped in a fandom - interest check (freeform, magic, supernatural, exotic?)

Modern characters with limited modern items and weaknesses find themselves in a world of Sword and Sorcery. First, they may "fanboy" about it but later the harsh reality sets in. They are forever separated from their families as well as their technological links to information and the rest of the world.

Remember the old Dungeons and Dragons cartoon from the 1980's? Possibly not; perhaps I'm just dating myself here. I get a bit giddy at the idea of being sucked into the world of one of my fandoms. I think it would be fun to start a game here, if anyone is interested. I do not have a particular setting in mind and I am leaning toward creating a world just for this game.

A list of other shows with a similar theme for reference:

  • Log Horizon (New update to MMORPG and characters find themselves stuck as their PCs in the world)
  • Overlord (Man sees out the ending minutes of a beloved virtual reality MMORPG that was being discontinued due to lack of interest. Game reboots with him actually physically in the story, which he is able to now help shape.)
  • Sword Art Online (Sort of. Still physically in the real world, characters get locked into their virtual reality of the game
  • Grimgar (Possibly. Characters have amnesia upon waking. They have to make their way in a S&S world. References to modern technology are made on occasion)
  • GATE (Not exactly. The characters actually go into another world/dimension that has a lot of the fantasy elements they are used to)
  • The Rising of the Shield Hero*
  • That time I was reincarnated as a Slime*
  • Re:Monster* (Protagonist mercenary gains powers of others by eating them).
  • World Customize Creator*
  • El~Hazard*
(If you can think of others, I will happily include them here)
*indicates stories I am not personally familiar with yet.

Each character would have one or more weaknesses that would be difficult to manage without modern technology, though there may end up being an alternate way to handle it eventually. Flaws are encouraged - in both personality and body - in this game because I heartily dislike 'perfect' characters and imperfect ones make for a more complex story. To this end, I think it would make it more interesting to have the PCs in their actual, normal "human" bodies in the world, rather than any character they had created in a game (if we went that route) but
transformation is a possibility after the story is established. Say a character is overweight, they could find themselves quickly becoming fit from the new activity level required. Or a character identifies strongly with a race in the story, they could possibly find some way to magically transform their body and become one of the tribe.

I can act as GM in this game if we get enough interest, though I would be open to co-GMing.

Let's not forget

"The Rising of the Shield Hero" which I've been enjoying quite a bit recently

as well as "That time I was reincarnated as a Slime"

Both have mangas out that are very enjoyable reads as well.

Finished these two in the web novels. I can attest both are good reads. There's also Re:Monster, w/ the protagonist being a mercenary who can gain powers of others by eating them, killed by a yandere girlfriend and reborns as a goblin with his memories and power intact. World Customize Creator is another of the Sword and Game genre.

Wanted to do a game like this, but setting up the mechanics of the world sounds like a mess. :P

Therefore I'd be interested in seeing what can be done in this one. ;)

El~Hazard comes to mind for me. :) Who doesn't love Shala Shala

But for more examples, it's an entire genre in Japan, check out this page.

I remember El Hazard. My first Fan Fict was in it.  ;)

I need to find a copy of it somewhere

Hello, everyone! I've seen the posts here but haven't had a chance to do much. I'll add the suggestions now and I thank you for them!  :-)

I would like to ask for clarification for everyone who didn't say - are you interested in the game concept or just chatting? (Both are fine)

For those who are interested, would you prefer a specific fandom world (I would only be able to GM those I'm familiar with) or something new?

I'm voting for something new, or a mix of various fandoms (you are familiar with). That way it wouldn't be stuck to just an adaptation of one place.

I'm putting my flag on "Semi-Interested" at this point. It looks very promising. :D

Though RE: Monster sounds quite interesting.

That and RE:Zero. Rem, and Felix Best waifus!

There's the web novel and the manga versions floating around in the net out there. Can be easily found with a Google search. ;)

The series is nice, as long as you're not the protagonist's enemy. :P

I've seen overlord and like the idea. So would be interested, I agree with Steir in making it a new world
