Okay, I've noticed that some people have larger avatars than the typical 100 x 100 thingy..and I have a beautiful picture picked out that is fairly small in size but everytime I upload it it says that it is too large, or "not an avatar...."

Up to 130x170 it should be fine. Experiment a bit, and see when it works.
