MEMORANDUM FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A SUPERNATURAL INVESTIGATION AGENCY

The following is submitted in reference to the Quantum Shift Incident involving the the child of the researcher Cid Gaines at Walker AFB:

In light of the fallout of the recent quantum physics experiments conducted at Walker AFB, NM, it has come to the attention of the President that a new organization should be founded to further look into the nature of the mist in the influx of monsters More specifically, the intent of the formation of this agency is to further explore:

What caused the mist?
How do we fight them?
Will more open up?

Emergency funds have been created and transferred to Roswell NM, New York AFB NY, Knoxville TN, and Boulder CO for use in experimental programs involving the materials gathered from the monsters at the site of Walker AFB in NM.

INCIDENTS REGARDING CREATURES FROM THE FAR PLANE

The initial reports at Walker AFB suggested that the child was able to contain the breach in the Portal to Farplane on that day back in '05. further examination of the subject suggests that the subject has began to have feelings of guilt surrounding the incident in that he believes he slaughtered a bunch of innocent creatures rather than the monsters we know them to be.

Furthermore, some towns are starting to have increasing numbers of events around graveyards where the dead were buried in the last year since the invasion. The need for additional teams is quickly outstripping the resources devoted to the Monster Investigation and Suppression Teams.

Please be advised that we are looking into the matter, and that it is grounds for expulsion from the Department of Defense and its subsidiary agencies

I'm beginning to not give a fuck about redacting all this shit. We all know they're a bunch of monsters. Literally everyone knows. You know that in Chicago the train station goes straight to FUCKING HELL? Literally the place where people who've somehow clung to Christianity in light of all the magic think that FUCKING SATAN lives!

The bullshit stories we feed them are getting pretty thin. And did you hear about the complaints at Mall of America? You better get some serious spin doctors out there to try to make sense of what's going on, and maybe, just maybe not throw the public into a FUCKING panic.


This advertisement is for a game set in an Earth where Final Fantasy JRPG monsters invaded from the Farplane in 2012, starting with an incident at Mall of America. The game is Powered by the Apocalypse (the JRPG World RPG found on my server, which is also in my sig). The game is about both the civilians at Mall of America on the day of the incident, and the members of an organization called MIST (Monster Investigation and Suppression Team) who are sent from the Chicago office to investigate the incident, contain the rumors of the flaming orb, and touch base back with MIST Chicago in a world where modern technology is failing fast. Ideally I'd like enough players for a Big Group game (Most likely Light since JRPGs are rarely super graphic, but depending on player interest may lean NC or Extreme). Civilians at Mall of America MUST be human, or able to pass as human (see below) but members of MIST may be any Ancestry in the Character's Guide. since the intervening time since the incident in 05, and the current day ('12) some non-hostile entities were likely to have came though a portal.

At the start of the game, it might be reasonable to evaluate GP as equal to the US Dollar, but that will quickly tank, and people will be forced to start using some other currency fairly quickly. This may be decided by us as a group before the game starts or in situ.

I've been thinking about that, and I've come to the conclusion that there is some room for nuance:

Context of Ancestries in Earth

It has been noted previously that the ancestries that could pass as human were more likely to be civilians while those that can't were more likely MIST operatives. The thought kept me awake well past 4:45 AM one day. While doing some researh into reasons why Nephalim might be called down, I discovered that one had an extinct people who "fought like dragons", which honestly looked like as good enough a justification for Dragonkin (Lóngzú) as any. This had me spiralling until I was distracted by another thought, but I still ended up coming back to it. It got me wondering how many ancestries I could make historical precedent for. What follows is an approximation of that process:

Ancient
They aren't based in any particular culture, and could be anything with a lifespan that isn't defined by aging. This could loosely be vampirism but that requires flaws characters in this game don't have. What is most likely the case is folk heroes that have faded from the public eye due to having fulfilled an original purpose and been recalled to another, historical figures that might have died or disappeared under mysterious circumstances that weren't all that well forensically detailed, if at all. Specific Mythical individuals are subject to Lifebreather approval, but having the wrong number of appendages is likely out since ancients are usually passing.

Android
MIST probably built current gen ones. There is no reason suspected alien events couldn't have left robotic artifacts. There's no reason the two can't combine. And since Quantum Magic is definitely a thing, there's no reason for technological time travel not to exist. RealDolls were created in 1996, and the technology would have been sufficiently advanced by MIST between 2007 and 2012 for them to have AI. Some issues with programming could speed this along on an individual basis. These kinds of dolls might serve as mannequins in the mall incognito.

Chīhuò
These 'people who cook' that look like a human with froggy skin, and an unnaturally large mouth could have kept their nature secret by just not unhinging their jaw. The possibility that they are alien origin isn't unreasonable. At a glance they could just look like a big sweaty fat guy/gal.

Dwarf & Elf
They both have words resembling "Krakatoa" in their languages that correspond to some ambiguous catastrophe in their past, but they as ancestries don't have particular knowledge of whether that has anything to do with the geological feature on Earth.

Gigant
It isn't known whether they are the "wildman" of Yeti, Sasquatch, or other Bigfoot type creatures qualify for this ancestry, but they do hit the right height range somewhere in the middle. Even if they are, it would be difficult to explain how they've been in hiding for as long as cultures have had this genre of myth. They would most likely not come to a metro area until after the fall though, so they're definitely porting in from Elsewhere (Elsweyr?) on the day.

Goblin and Orc
Both of their etymological histories have their origins in the ADs, meaning they aren't likely to have been widely observed until cities forced that. There is absolutely nothing keeping either ancestry from trying to pass as a street urchin with a skin condition, although the considerably taller and more well postured Orc might make one wander in retrospect. The only question is how well they sell it.

Lóngzú
As previously noted, dragonkin fit multiple mythologies, and  could have crossed the Bering Strait with the other indigenous people that migrated thusly.

Mistborn
In the Characters guide they're described as originating from coalesced MP. This means they either spontaneously occurred after the events depicted in the Intro or they are from some other dimension they are locked out of remembering.

Nekojin
Couldn't say beyond the fact that this is a JRPG. Maybe their origins are as widespread as the anime media that features them?

Nephilim
They often believe they are from heaven, although whether there is only a singular one and if not, which one is up for debate. Not usually by them. They are likely to have been sent, but this sequence of events may not have been their first.

Rattenmensch
It would be hard to disguise these as people, but once the world goes to shit, people begin to speculate signs of their existence were there, like the TMNT Live Action movies. They could theoretically live anywhere real rats are common, but mostly out of sight of humans.

Usagijin
Nothing more to contribute beyond what the Character Guide already does. In order to disguise their existence, they'd only need to dig larger holes in the ground. Like Ratten, their homes are most likely near where their real world rabbit/hare counterparts exist.

Yamorijin
Could very easily be uplifted gators or Komodo Dragons, which only got as big as they did if they were able to hide in cool damp places like sewers. This and any other uplift would have occurred during the events depicted upthread.

All this is to say that these ideas neither affirm nor deny whether prospective players should or shouldn't start out as civilians, but they express ways they could one way or another.

It's actually listed as NC, but I actually don't need any NC content. I only mentioned that as a possibility in case monsters got rowdy. They don't have to.
