Lesbian Pulp Story

In the post World War II years through the late 1960’s, a new genre of story was created with the access to paperback book publishing; the lesbian pulp novel. The term “pulp” referred to the quality of the paper used to print paperback books at that time, a low quality but inexpensive paper that would keep the cost of printing down. At that time, unlike today, paperback books were usually viewed as lowbrow, titillating stories for the masses for subjects like science fiction, adventure, romances, murder mysteries and so on. Lumped together with all the other “trash fiction” was the erotic novel. Sexy stories that could be churned out quickly, printed cheaply and sold in places like bus stops and drugstores to an audience looking for a quick thrill.

Lesbian pulp was considered outright pornography with their lurid tales of unsuspecting women being preyed upon by perverse lesbians with their unnatural desires. They were cautionary tales, written mostly for men, with many heroines being “saved” by their heterosexual prince charming or perhaps meeting with some ignominious end. Some, however, dared to portray gay women as finding love and comfort in the arms of another woman. While it was definitely exploitive, it also brought lesbian women into the consciousness of a nation and may have helped gay women realize they might not be alone with their feelings.

Like most “adult only” books of the time, the titles, taglines and covers were racy and some even downright sexy. Which brings us to the point of this post.

I am checking interest more aimed at the writers out there than the game players. My idea is to start a topic with an actual title of a lesbian pulp novel from that era (the title only) and give anyone interested a time limit (say two weeks) to write a short story inspired by the title. At the end of the two weeks, everyone who participated will be allowed to vote on whose story was best. I’ll then post the next title and so on. Winners will receive an icon or stamp or something they can display on their profile or signature or whatever they like. (Also known as bragging rights.)

The (Suggested) Rules:

• Stories must have a beginning, a middle and an end and must concern lesbian characters.
• RP is allowed, but in the end a cohesive story must be created.
• Underage characters (16-17) are allowed, but they may NOT engage in or be the subject of any sexual activity. (A younger sister of the main character expressing her own feelings and fears of being a lesbian, for example.)
• Collaboration with another writer is allowed and even encouraged. However, they must be an active member of Elliquiy.
• Stories can be set in any genre or setting and written in any style. Fanfiction is perfectly acceptable.
• Stories can be posted “as you go” but only completed stories will be eligible for the vote.
• Elliquiy TOS standards still apply.
