I know that copyright in a thread is mutually owned by all who contribute. My question is whether that extends merely to the content posted within said thread, or if it extends to other uses of the characters who are written in the thread. Does one lose the right to separately write a character away from a group if that character has a character sheet/bio/background in a thread? The same question if that character has been used in any posts in story threads.

I simply want to avoid running afoul of potential legal issues with my characters, and I've never really been involved in Group RPs until recently. In one-on-one writing, it's easy to ask the partner "do you mind if I use this concept elsewhere" where a group of 30+ individuals can be difficult to obtain unanimous consent from, especially if members are no longer active.

Thank you in advance!

Your character belongs to you, so you may use them elsewhere if you wish. Your partners' characters belong to them, and the NPCs in a game belong to the person writing them, so if you want to write one of those characters/NPCselsewhere, you will need the permission of the person who created them.
