1887

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.”

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

GMs are Grizzly, Rustic, and WickedLittleWitch.  Please PM all three for inquiries and character submissions.

1887 is a story guided free form group roleplay that is centered around a criminal outlaw gang and one last heist before going their separate ways for good.  This is largely inspired by the television show 1883 as well as the video game Red Dead Redemption 2.  There is no need to be absolutely familiar with those two, as this is a separate and stand alone story, but for a good sense of flavor those two are excellent sources.

The story itself follows the disbanded McGraw Outfit.  Following a botched and disastrous robbery in 1882, the gang went their separate ways.  Some seeking fortune.  Fame.  A chance to make a name for themselves.  Others went out into the cold and unforgiving world in search of a place to call their own, or a place to live out the rest of their lives in search of a little bit of peace.

However, those dreams have forsaken them, leaving them alone in the world until a letter arrives for them...

Earl McGraw is getting the gang back together for one more heist, one that will make them richer beyond their wildest dreams, one that could give them all the life they truly want and yearn for, to give them the American Dream they've always wanted.

Overview
Each character will be sent a letter inviting them to come together for one last heist.  It's been a long five years, but old Earl has been keeping tabs on most of the crew.  Wherever they are in the United States, and North America for that matter, a letter will arrive telling them, in Earl's congenial and charismatic prose, that he's getting the gang back together for a heist that can't fail, that will make them richer than they ever could imagine.  All he asks is for a little bit of faith in him and the plan. Every letter will tell the member of the outfit to come to one of their old but memorable safehouses in Texas on September 21st, that all will be explained and fortunes will be made.

The story itself will be focused on a narrative and plot, guided by the GM(s).

While the world itself in this time in history is a bit closeminded and biggoted, the gang itself will not be.

Structure
The story itself is going to be a hybrid of a plot and GM driven narrative, plus free form and open world story line.

For the first part of the story, the group will be focused on a singular heist and plot that will be orchastrated and driven by the GM(s).  Characters will be given leads and bits to write for their character if desired, as well as interacting with NPCs written by both GM(s) and other group writers to advance the story.  This will lead to the culmination of the heist and the job to get the loot and hit their target.

After the heist that brings the group together, the group itself will become a bit more democratic and organized in a sense that future heists and plots will be open to writer submissions and ideas.  This is intended to be a group game after all, and as such, driven by a group dynamic that will foster collaboration and unity.  Anyone can submit ideas and it can be voted on OOC, with GM(s) being a tie breaker.

Characters
This game is intended to be fun.  While it is set in a time that is bigoted and backwards in it's societal views and equality, this game will not tolerate race play themes or dialogue.  Those that violate this, without consent of all parties involved, will be asked to leave the game completely.

This is a game.  It is intended to be fun.

This is intended to include a diverse cast.  As previously mentioned, while the world might be a bit bigoted, the gang itself won't be.  They come from all different walks of life, but are driven by the common cause of bettering themselves and their lives, and helping one another.  It's truly a family that looks out for one another.  Now there might be a bad seed or two in the group, but overall the group is intended to be a close knit family with at least some respect for one another.

Historical Accuracy
This is first and foremost a writing game.  I strongly believe that these groups are meant to be fun and engaging exercises, not an immersive text reenactment.  While some general knowledge is recommended and things are requested to be in line with the timeline, I won't nitpick if something is not entirely accurate (i.e. a railroad where there shouldn't be one yet, clothing, etc).  I also expect this from those who join.  Don't harass or badger someone if something is not to the day historically accurate.

Rules and FAQs

  • Real life comes first.  This is supposed to be fun and a game, not an obligation. There are more important things to life than getting posts in.  Take care of yourself and your life first before writing.
  • Do not pester others to post.  A tie in to the rule above.  Not everyone has an abundance of freetime, nor do they have matching schedules.  Don't pester or harass people to post just because you want something sooner than later.
  • All Characters MUST be 18 Years or Older.  This is for the comfort of everyone involved and potential writers.  Underage characters will not be approved.
  • Please utilize the Content Field in the Post Header to warn against triggering content.  Not everyone wants to read things of a graphic and/or sexual nature.  Please use the Content field in the header to help those stay within their comfort zone and make sure people aren't uncomfortable.
  • Be Polite and Leave the Drama at the Door.  IF you have issues with another writer here, please be an adult about it.  This is supposed to be fun and exciting, not a daycare.
  • Only Real People or Realistic/Classic Art will be allowed for face claims.  This group will not allow characters that are anime or consist of cartoonish proportions.
  • Do not Historically Accurate Shame other writers over trivial details.  If something is egregiously out of place for the story, please do so privately or through the GM.  Minor things will largely be ignored, as this is intended to be fun.
  • Come to the GM if you have issues.  Please contact the GM if you have an issue that can't be resolved.

How many characters can a writer have?
Each writer will be allowed one character per writer.  This character can be a member of the gang.  They are, however, allowed to create multiple NPCs and will be capped at a reasonable number.

Where will this game be placed?
This will be placed in the Extreme Section of the group.  This is to allow characters maximum creativity, and will utilize a content warning field in the header to help writers avoid troubling elements.

Can I create undercover law enforcement characters?
No.  Not at this time.

How many characters will you be accepting?
The group will be accepting a limited number of characters into the group to avoid having the group become bloated.  A very large gang would be very easy to find, but also the group should be a cohesive unit.

Does my character have to be an outlaw/murderer?
You have the option to create camp followers who are in essence accomplices and aid the group in doing the background work on setting up scores and heists.

Is this LGBTQ friendly?
Absolutely!

Will there be a Discord?
Yes.  There will be a discord server in addition to a forum OOC for announcements and chatting/plotting.

How will this be run and played?
This group will be, in the beginning, largely guided sandbox with a central heist and elements guided by the GM. After the first heist, this group will be a bit more democratic and allow for vested, proven members of the group (i.e. members who have proven to be able to play by the rules and have stuck around) chances to create their own heists for the group to follow and run.

Character Sheets

A Few Things for Character Sheets

Character Requirements
All characters must be eighteen years of age or older.  There are no exceptions.  All characters must be accompanied by a photo for a visual/physical reference.  It is encouraged that they be real, actual people, but classical styled art will also be accepted.  Anime or overly cartoonish character images will not be permitted.

Honor
In the Character Sheet there is a section called Honor.  This section is to help illuminate what kind of character you're creating.  Are the good and upstanding?  Or are they scoundrels and monsters?  It is on a scale of 1 to 10, with ten being highly honorable.  A middle ranking of 5 is in the grey area, and perfectly acceptable.

Strengths and Weaknesses
Every character is required to have at least two strengths and two weaknesses.  They can be physical or mental. The goal with this field is to make characters both stand out, but to also make them normal people with problems.  If the GM does not feel the weaknesses are strong enough, you may be asked to elaborate or add more.

Character Sheet Review and Approval
Character sheets will be reviewed in the order of which they have been received via PM to myself.  If you post it in the recruitment thread and not submitted, I will assume it is a work in progress and will not review it until it is finalized or if you have questions or concerns about your idea.  The review process can vary depending on my own schedule outside of work, so please be patient.  If you have not received a PM from me clearly and explicitly stating that your character is approved, DO NOT post it in the character thread.

A History of the McGraw Outfit

Earl McGraw
The Beginning and Rise
The McGraw Outfit's origins began in the crucible of the American Civil War.  Shaped and molded by the horrors witnessed by the war, many of these soldiers, on both sides of the war, struggled to find a way to fit in and integrate into a society that had been ravaged by war.

It is a time of opportunity for most, as the nation tries to heal and turn it's attention towards the west, and the vast open land and resources that lay waiting.  As civilization begins to expand west, so too does opportunity.  It is in this moment that men (and women) begin to seize upon the riches that are ripe for the plunder, seeking to build new lives and and fortunes out of the wreckage of a fractured nation.

Earl McGraw is one of those men.

One of the early maurauders of the western frontier, the wiley outlaw put together a band of outlaws of his own.  With his charm and charisma he sought out people who could be molded and shaped to his will, seeking those of talent and strength.  What began as stage coach robberies and petty little crimes began to grow into more fruitful opportunities.

The Good Times...
As the successes and notoriety began to pile up, so too did the hunger and thirst for more.  The swell of success only made the group hungrier and bolder in their efforts.  From stage coaches the gang progressed to robbing trains and small town banks along the frontiers, increasing their coffers as well as their noteriety among not just law enforcement, but among those wishing to join the ranks.

Life was good.  The gang had food in their bellies and gold and silver in their pockets.  Rivals were made, the law scorned, and alliances brokered.  From camp to camp the gang moved, growing richer every step of the way as they navigated their newfound success.  The future was looking brighter than the gleam of gold in sunlight.  By the start of 1882, the gang had reached infamous levels, their wanted posters dotted along the frontiers as bounty hunters and U.S. Marshalls searched high and low for the McGraw Outfit.

Their infamy preceded them in most parts of the territories.  The stories and gossip passed from town to town, camp to camp only inflating the mythos of the McGraw Outfit.  Not a shot had to be fired in some instances, their mere presence enough to force even the strongest willed bank manager and guard submit to their demands.

It was only a matter of time before the law caught up with them.

The Dorinda Springs Heist and the Downfall of the Outfit
All good things must come to an end, and for the McGraw Outfit, that end came by the name of Dorinda Springs.

It was supposed to be an easy job.  In and out, with enough gold to satisfy even the most hungry of desires for wealth.  This was the kind of score the outfit could retire on, the heist that many could only dream about.  Some said it was too good to be true, but with Earl's backing and sweet talking, the Outfit fell in lock step with their leader.

Dorinda Springs was a quiet little town in the New Mexico Territory.  With a rail station, bank, and telegraph, it seemed to be the edge of civilization in the wild and turbulent west, with no other town around for hundreds of miles.  It was isolated, and served as the depot for a mining operation a couple of dozen miles away where silver was being mined.  And with rail disruption from tracks being sabotaged, the bank seemed to be bursting with wealth.

And so it began.  That perfect little heist that would be the doom for the group.  Jesse McGraw, Earl's brother, discovered that the bank was going to be full of silver, gold, and bonds from the mining operation, and with no way out except over land by stage, it seemed like a heist of a lifetime.  As Sunday Church service was going to be in full service, and only inexperienced miners conscripted to maintain watch until better security arrive, the bank was just waiting to be robbed.

Yet, instead of silver and gold and wealth beyond imagination, the Outfit only found a trap.  Carefully orchestrated by Pinkertons, the Outfit walked right into it, and found themselves in an ambush.  Those that survived had to fight their way out of the bank and town to find salvation.

Some were captured.  Many more wounded and killed.  Those that got away scattered to the four winds, the McGraw Outfit broken and shattered forever.

Five Years Later and The Promise of Something New
It's been a long five years.  Five years of silence.  Five years of growing apart and trying to establish new lives.

Those shattered remnants of the Outfit have gone off in search of better lives.  Some have tried their hand at farming.  Ranching.  Others at saloon keeping.  Try as they might to find their way in an ever changing world as civilization comes crashing down upon them, there is still that feeling in their gut.  That need, yearning, for something more.  Something real and true.  Earl knows it, because he too has felt that stirring within, and when a job comes across his path, one that could set right the wrongs of the past, one that could make them all rich, he knows he has to reach out, to try and get the gang back together for one last shot at freedom.

And so, with keeping tabs on his former mates, and the hiring of detectives in some cases, Earl reaches out to those long lost gang members.  A letter, personal and charming in Earl's own way, was sent out, inviting those select few surviving members of the gang to come and chase glory one last time in the saddle with him.

The Coffman Place, or When Times Were Good
Members of the gang who are reached out to by Earl will be asked to gather at the The Old Place as it were called, or also known as the Coffman House in northeast Arizona.

This hideout and base of operations was a favorite of the group.  An old farm house and ranch, it had seen better days, but for the outfit, it was far better than nothing but canvas to shield them from the wild and ever changing elements out on the open plains.  It was once a thriving little boarding house, but after skirmishes of the Natives and a cholera outbreak, the old man Coffman left the house for good, and all of it's heartbreak as he the house had become a place of misery and death for the old man.

It was a run down house, stricken by the elements, but for the gang it was a home.  With plenty of space and rooms, and wide open vantages around them, the outfit could see threats coming for miles while having a semblance of a normal life.  There were many good times to be had at the Coffman Place, and certain heartbreak when it came time to leave in search of the next big score for the gang.

Rivals and Fiends

Cyrus "The Undertaker" Hill and the Hill Gang
The chief rivals for the McGraw Outfit were the Hill Gang, led by Cyrus "The Undertaker" Hill.

Cyrus started out in the service of the Union Army as a grave digger for the recently deceased at field hospitals.  The grim and disturbing deeds gave the man the nickname the Undertaker, a moniker that Cyrus seemingly embraced to help further his notoriety and legend among similar social circles.  It was said that both he and Earl used to run together in the Templeton Gang immediately after the Civil War, and the two men were fairly close companions before the gang broke up and the two men went their separate ways.

The two gangs often competed for the same prizes, and a rivalry was born from those competitions.  There's been a bit of bad blood between the groups, with things getting grewsome and rough.  There's no love lost between the two groups, and would often fight one another if seen out in the wider world.

Preston Walker and the Grey Marauders
The Grey Marauders are an old group that has evolved over the years, with its beginnings stretching back to the end of the Civil War.  Made up of mostly Confederate soldiers with no place to go and no fortunes, the group was formed in order to help establish a livelihood for the group while seeking to find a new way of life in an ever changing world.  Often more organized and precise, using their military training and methods, the group are a formidable gang that is disciplined and merciless.

Leaders have come and gone over the years, but they are currently led by a man named Preston Walker.  A young man during the war, he had seen his fair share of horrors and sights through a stint in a Union prison.  Disenchanted and betrayed by the Confederate surrender, he is a hardliner with no tolerance for Unionist men and women who had ravaged and destroyed his life.  He is a brutal, sadistic, and calculating man and tactician when it comes to jobs.

The group's goal is to garner enough cash and goods to begin an organized rebellion in the territories or Mexico in the hopes of establishing a Confederate safe haven.  They are a group driven by a racist ideology, and often seek to enslave those captured before working them to death.  Soldiers of the Union, current and former, often meet grisly ends.

Nathaniel Hawkins, or the Pilgrim and the Divine
One of the most notorious gangs and fearful are a group called the Divine, led by a man nicknamed The Pilgrim.

On the surface, The Pilgrim is a congenial and well mannered man.  Charming and a sweet talker, with a gift for slight of hand and magic tricks.  His charms can be disarming and persuasive, but do not let the man fool you.

He and his group are savages.  Pure and simple.

He is the leader of a group called The Divine.  They are a blood thirsty and savage band who believe in their own divinity through the consumption of their enemies.  It is common for the group to strip pieces of flesh from their slain, dismembering and disfiguring those in their wake before consuming pieces of their flesh.  It is this that gives them the belief that they are higher and transcendent beings, greater than mortal men.  Many will choose suicide over being captured by these individuals as the reputation is a rightfully frightening one.

Sounds interesting. I suppose it depends on how fast the group game moves and if I can keep up with it, as sometimes big events in games move too fast for me.

Something I definitely forgot to address!

I'm of the mind that this should be fun and exciting, but also at a gradual pace.  I don't expect people to post once a day, as I definitely don't have the time for that, but once a week or ten days would be ideal.  Enough time to give people opportunity to post but also so that it doesn't bog down.

I'm also thinking that this is not going to be a huge big group, like twenty or thirty characters.  I was hoping for at least eight members of the gang, but I am open to other writers creating NPCs and playing them in the furtherment of heists, jobs, etc.

I tend to world build the fudge out of things. And I always worry if I'm doing way too much or not enough.  So I will take any and all reassurance I can get.

I have a feeling that this is going to get going.  My muse has been incredibly high on this for a while.  How much interest is something that remains to be seen before I put stuff all together in place.

I'm intrigued, and pondering the possibility of a medic type of character. Either a woman, in which case she would be an ex army nurse, or perhaps a male character,  an ex army doctor.  Considering the setting, I don't feel that a female doctor would fit, since women would nor be able to recieve such education during Civil War times.

Female medics are more than welcome.  She could have been like Clara Barton, a nurse during the Civil War, and learned most of her medical knowledge and experience in the battlefield hospitals.  Might not be an official doctor with a degree and everything, but that wouldn't matter.

I'm not going to play this as must be 1000% historical accurate.  If you can stretch it and make it fit to a way that it makes sense, I think it should be alright.

If we're at faceclaims already, then I'd like to reserve Rodrigo Santoro for my gang member, and Zach McClarnon for an NPC.

Elizabeth Blackwell (1821–1910) was the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States. In 1857, with her sister, Emily Blackwell, MD; and Marie Zakrzewska, MD, she opened the New York Infirmary for Women and Children. She also published Pioneer Work in Opening the Medical Profession to Women in 1895.

That's what I meant, kind of. A woman wouldn't be able to get formal education and a degree, but for a gang of outlaws, someone who can tend to wounds and common diseases with enough success is, reasonably speaking, good enough.

Thanks for the reference Kuroneko. Though I am looking to make a character that is average enough to make money robbing banks. Those women were exceptional in their age. I doubt they would get their degree and then join a gang. Still, writing freedom, I do get that we can have some leeway in this aspect. I'll think about it.
One thing to consider is that you can't be accused of medical malpractice if you don't have a license to begin with! Just imagine the back and forth as someone is complaining on the care after being shot and she replies  "well go and find a real doctor then!"

And since this is before the Geneva Convention, she could pack a mean Winchester (still picking the exact model) and a LeMat revolver, for that extra bit of buckshot to go with 9 shots...

Sweet!

I would like to dibs Elizabeth Wood for my FC, if possible c:

Edit: I'm also thinking that my character was in a relationship with someone in the gang and they split up during their last job, before going their separate ways. They then reconvene with the gang getting back together and things between them are....messy...in many different ways.

Rustic

Hmm I'm split on what I want to do. Either an old member, using Carl Urban. (can you reserve in the meantime?)

Or, have a young new member. Basically the son of one of the old members. His father passed away so he got the letter since he went by his father's name (just junior). Having heard all the stories, knowing where the hideout was, he decided to go and try to join up to provide for his family. (assuming this would be allowed)

Will have him reserved for ya.

Either way you look at it, I think both are solid routes.  If you go down the young, new member, he could get his father's letter from Earl and join up.  You could also, if you wanted, do up a little short thing on the father to really tie in everyone. I have a section just for that for the group.  Speaking of which...

Oooohkay, so since this thing got a ton of interest in a short amount of time (yowza) I a going to go ahead and officially open this up for recruitment.

I have posted a Game Information and Character Sheet thread located here...

https://elliquiy.com/forums/index.php?topic=353149.0

I added in a section that deals with former and current members of the gang that are going to be GM NPCs.  These characters are there to help broker connections and tie people in to the group.

I have the reserved face claims listed there as well.  I have two for the moment for myself, as I have a sharpshooter character all done and ready, but have a male and female version that will be deployed depending on the layout and needs of the group.

I will also listen to ideas for general NPCs to be added to the group once we have enough sheets submitted.

The character sheet template is located in that thread above, and I will also be adding it to the main post.

Throwing my hat in there...would a person whose a tracker, or perhaps someone of a demolitionsit variety be needed/welcome etc?

Also the sheet in recruitment is lacking some things the one on the character page has...

Also also, requesting a hold for FC on AMber Midthunder.

Hi! I just wanted to give you a heads up as another player that I've actually put forth a scout-like character for submission (not that she's been accepted or anything yet.) I just thought I should mention it in case it sways your idea to demolitionist instead. Regardless, both ideas are cool!

Also, hi everyone! Its nice to see some familiar faces here c:

Kuroneko

The character I sent in as a highly charismatic quickdraw/gunslinger with sticky fingers. I pitched that he might get sent in often to case the place and sweet talk people. I'm sure that there's bound to be a lot of overlap with gun types. I also talked with Gnothi about a native character to bring connections to the native community, but he'd be an NPC.

Oooo, sounds really cool! Always gotta have a charismatic guy around! And yeah, I loved the face claim for the native NPC you offered :D

I just submitted a character that's kind of a dick (Karl Urban, had to), but often does lookouts and is an excellent shot with a rifle from a distance.

I saw the sheet, but haven't had a chance to read over it yet.

Also, for those interested, as we have two scout characters submitted, we will not be looking for characters that are primarily scouts at this time until I've had a chance to review.  I'm more than fine with two of those types, but three or more might be a tiny bit crowded.

Here's my contribution!
I'm looking to see if any prospective players, or ones with accepted characters, would like to have Kite and their character be ex-lovers. They broke up in the shit show of the Springs incident, went their separate ways perhaps spiting each other, or regretting their choices, and then are forced back into each others sphere's when called upon. If anyone does show interest, I'm more than happy to talk connections with them!

Also willing to talk connections in general, so don't be afraid to reach out! Either here or when Gnothi gets the Discord going c:

Looking forward to writing with you all!

I wouldn't mind discussing a connection. Ex-lovers could certainly be a possibility. I could see them being opposites, and he would likely have lots of trust issues with her given his past. Feel free to PM me.

Seems like the story is an instant hit, judging by the interest.  I probably won't be able to send a character till Wednesday I'm afraid - being out of town with just my phone to type on is not that comfortable when it comes to working on character sheets. Though I am planning on writing a Confederate army doctor's daughter who took the trade after him, but didn't get a license.

I have a question BEFORE I get too far into my sheet.

How do we feel about a soiled dove from New Orleans with a hint of voodoo in her soul? She'd be a group follower with a light touch for things not nailed down and a source of information for the main members of the Gang.

Would that work?

Hey there WLA *waves*

Okay!

So right now we have (and this includes the pending sheets in my inbox)...

2 Gun
2 Tracker/Sharpshooter
3 Recon/Intel - Including Counter Intelligence
1 Sharpshooter
1 Scout
1 Medic

Roughly what we have so far off the top of my head.  That's basically the primary jobs/specialties and roles in the gang.  Some might help out during heists (i.e. our counter-intel gal).  I'd ideally like to get a few more who are primarily guns and stuff, the foot soldiers of the group, but I'm not picky.  We also have a lot of female characters in the group, and I won't say no to more of those, but if anyone is on the fence as to which way to go, I'd say we could use a couple more guys.  All depends on the personalities and characters though.

I'm also way behind on putting together the reserved face claims AND the character directory in the info thread.  So bear with me while I try to get things sorted out and get some stuff put together.

I am going to ask that from now on, if you haven't submitted a sheet already, new characters avoid having tracking and sharpshooting in their Strengths section.  We seem to be getting a lot of people that are good trackers and sharpshooters, and would like to break that up a little bit for new characters.

I'd like to plant a flag here with a tentative FC of Charlize Theron.

Rough idea - She was a member of the gang prior to Dorinda Springs, often clashing with Earl as she was not quite as easily molded and manipulated by his "charms" but she was good at her job so he kept her around. At Dorinda Springs, however, when things went south there was a chance for one of them to get away (one horse left or something like that). MC was captured by the Pinkertons and was sentenced to 5 years in prison (they only had hard evidence for relatively minor crimes). Shortly after her release, the letter came and she decided to be a part of the heist and, possibly, get a chance for revenge on the man that left her to rot. (Perhaps Earl even had romantic/lustful intentions towards MC, but they were not reciprocated.)

I'd like to introduce you all to Haylon Cash.  Folks call him Hazard but he would like me to assure you that it is for all the right reasons.   Just ignore those slanderous rumours that aim to besmirch his good character.

Good being a rather subjective term.

Gnothi, could I request Mario Blanco for an NPC? Sin is going to need a guy around to keep the girls and herself safe whilst they are traveling. He'd be an extra gun at the very least.

Hi,

Just wanted to drop by. My plate has become a little more full than I like, so I am going to withdraw my flag of interest for now. If I can get up to speed again, I might pop back in.

Mmm, I'm tempted but I gotta think of a good character to make.

Edit: Nah, I'll try my hand at making a sheet! If I need to reserve a faceclaim in case, could I reserve Jeremy Renner? I got an idea for a character. :D

Cory Winchester
Hawkeye

Character Name and Aliases: Cory Winchester, “Hawkeye”

Writer Name: Tokyorose627

Face Claim: Jeremy Renner

Age: 30

Physical Information:  Cory stands at 6’0, with short cut dark brown hair. Usually, side swept in a somewhat unkempt fashion, Winchester usually makes up for this by wearing a white cowboy hat, given to him from someone in his past. Cream colored skin slightly tanned from the western heat, rough callouses blend along his palms from the hard labor Cory has done in his life, both past and present. A shadow of facial hair etches along his skin, forming stubble along his jaw and face. The years haven’t been kind to Cory in the five years passed, a seriousness in his eyes that wasn’t there prior.

Personality:Cory has been seen as the somewhat reserved type, usually planning on his lonesome, thinking of the next course of action when in the Gang. While he minded his own business, he never shied away from getting involved with other gang members, having a drink and socializing when he had the time. At times he would even drop his distant persona to get to know others, and to find commonality in the other criminals he affiliated himself with.
5 years later though, and those that meet him now can see that something has changed in him. He’s still social, can hold a conversation and can throw back quips and insults when the time arises, but those that truly know Cory know that something happened to him in the years he’s been away. The more charming and open demeanor has faded, more so a mask to hide and fool any that try to dig a bit deeper into his past without the Gang.

Known Biography: Cory has always been used to being alone, on account of being abandoned by his folks when he was just a kid. Having to fend for himself at such a young age, he became a thief, stealing whatever means he could take, and he never cared about the consequences. Pickpocketing, stealing food, smuggling himself onto wagons destined for other small towns across the state lines; it didn’t matter to him.

It wasn’t until Cory was caught by the local sheriff of a town that he thought his life would be over, sent to the cells, or worse. However, the sheriff saw the value in his skills, and promised him a warmer bed and food if he could help him with information gathering. Finding the right people, getting the info that one wouldn’t suspect an orphaned kid to even understand, Cory agreed. For years, Cory became a tracker, helping the sheriff gather intel on who he needed to find, of criminals that were causing rowdy business in the streets. He wasn’t his father, Cory knew that for sure and dismissed it out right every time, but the sheriff was the closest thing that he ever had to a fatherly figure.

What the Sheriff didn’t expect was for Cory to take his skills with him as he grew older, using them for the same people that he had helped put away. Tracking was a hard skill, a commodity that not everyone was keen on in the West, and with that came potential profit for Cory. Much older, he began bartering his talents to others, from sheriffs, to local citizens, to the dirtiest of criminals. It wasn’t until he got word that someone was looking for him, The McGraw Outfit, after he had unknowingly helped in a heist of theirs. With the option of being held an accomplice and getting arrested, or leave his life behind to bring his talents to the McGraw Gang, Cory took the latter.

Since the Botched Job: Cory, contrary to his formerly outspoken and talkative personality with the gang, has been living a rather quiet life. Having a patch of land off in the West, a small farmhouse a few miles off the West of a town. Living alone, Cory tends to his work, raising a horse he’s had with him for a few years, while also keeping records of past and present informants he used to have contact with. Those that know him can tell that something is on his mind, a bigger plan at play than what he usually reveals.

Specialty or Role: Info Gatherer, Sharp Shooter

Notoriety: Cory has bounties for his arrest, mostly on the counts of murders from heists and other gang related fights that had occurred over the years. His most notable bounty is that of $500, having ended up killing the Mayor of a local town on account of his corruption to both the town citizens, and the McGraw Gang after double crossing them. The dubious acts of the Mayor were never fully revealed to the the townsfolk on account of the Mayor’s caution, leaving Cory to take the full blame.[font]

Honor:  7

Horse: Cory’s horse. While he tells those in public the horse’s name is Jax, the horse’s real name is Kamali meaning “Brave” in Choctaw.

Weapons:  Standard bolt action rifle. Revolver strapped to his side. An engraved knife, with a hand crafted leather handle.

Skills:

  • Tracking: Cory’s skills in tracking people is his greatest tool. With gathering intel on those that have arrived, left, or are stuck in place, Cory writes it all down.
  • Rivaled Marksmen: A sharpshooter in his own right, Cory sticks to shooting his target from vantage points or from distances. Keeping to the shadows to deliver a revolver shot, only getting closer to his enemies when the time arises or is needed.

Weaknesses:

  • Temper: Cory has had a temper, though usually controlled. Some things will set him off however, especially when it comes to ill-minded and racially charged sentiments towards the Native tribes of the West.
  • Secretive: Cory’s been more tightlipped about his intentions joining back up with the Gang, and he’s sure that someone will notice. While he simply says it’s for the money, those with keener sense can tell the man has a bigger plan at play.

Goals: The money is something Cory could do with, but it’s not his end goal. With the heist he know they’ll be taking, comes information on people, and certain groups. Cory’s looking for the whereabouts of a certain individual and will do whatever it takes to find out where they’re hiding.

Likes: Alcohol, sleep, quiet, night skies, nature. Cory prefers a partner who can be both strong willed and vulnerable, someone more that trusts him and will work alongside him equally. While many men prefer a vulnerable and docile woman as a partner, Cory wants to find someone that can hold their own, and can allow him to be open without judgement.

Dislikes: Very talkative people, soldiers (Confederates especially), betrayal, selfish ‘protectors’, killing without cause, racism against others (more notably the Natives), politicians

Other Important Information: Cory is currently on the hunt for information regarding Preston Walker and the Marauders. On a path of revenge for killing a friend of his, he searches for information and ways to get closer towards his goal. Whether the path to revenge is the right one or not, Cory isn’t too sure, but he knows he wishes to avenge his friend’s death.

Here is an attempt at a character sheet:

Jasper "Snakebite" Caine

Jasper "Snakebite" Caine
Slim Jim

Character Name and Aliases: Jasper "Snakebite" Caine, also known as Slim Jim

Writer Name: Mainsnoires

Face Claim: Viggo Mortensen

Age: 35

Physical Information: Jasper stands at 6'0" with a lean and wiry build, his frame marked by the harsh life on the frontier. Sun-worn skin, dusty brown hair that's seen better days, and a pair of piercing green eyes that seem to hide a multitude of secrets. He sports a few scars, most notably a jagged one running on his chin, a memento of a close call during a past job. Always dressed in worn leather and faded denim, he's the personnification of a frontier wanderer.

Personality: Jasper is a charismatic and quick-witted conman with a devil-may-care attitude. He's charming when he needs to be, but beneath the smooth talk lies a cunning and opportunistic streak. He's a survivor, willing to do whatever it takes to come out on top. Jasper is resourceful and adapts to situations, often finding a way out of tight spots with a clever ruse or a fast getaway.

Known Biography: Jasper Caine, also known as Slim Jim in some circles, has a reputation as one of the slickest conmen. Jasper's escapades are often accompanied by a sly grin and a knack for slipping out of handcuffs just when the law thinks they've got him cornered. Though he's spent time behind bars, he's always managed to talk or swindle his way out.

Despite his dubious profession, Jasper has a certain code of honor. He never cheats those who can't afford it, and he's known to help the less fortunate when he can. That said, he's not above fleecing a corrupt banker or duping a crooked sheriff.

Since the Botched Job: After the disastrous heist in 1882 that led to the gang's disbandment, Jasper has been living life on the run. He's kept a low profile, taking on odd jobs and short cons to make ends meet. Yet, the desire for one last big score to secure a life of comfort still burns within him. He knows the past is never far behind, and he might need to make a daring move to clear his name or disappear for good.

Specialty or Role: Jasper specializes in the art of deception and manipulation. He's a master of forgery, and quick thinking, making him an important member of the gang when it comes to outsmarting rivals or pulling off elaborate cons.

Notoriety: Jasper Caine is known as a charming rogue and a slippery conman. There are whispers of his sharp card-playing skills, tales of townsfolk who fell victim to his clever schemes, and local lawmen who are ever vigilant for his return. His mischievous exploits are remembered in scattered wanted posters, offering rewards for information on his whereabouts, and colorful stories of his narrow escapes from the grasp of the law are told around campfires and in the dimly lit corners of saloons.

Honor: 6 (In the grey)

Horse: A sturdy but unremarkable chestnut mare named "Whisper."

Weapons: Jasper carries a finely crafted derringer concealed in his boot, a switchblade in his pocket, and a small but trusty Colt Peacemaker revolver hidden under his coat. His weapons are his last line of defense when charm and wit fail him.

Skills:

  • Master of Persuasion: Jasper has a silver tongue, capable of talking his way into or out of nearly any situation.
  • Quick Thinker: He excels at making split-second decisions, crucial in the fast-paced world of cons and heists.

Weaknesses:

  • Short-Temper: Jasper's quick wit can turn into a fiery temper when pushed too far, potentially leading to impulsive actions.
  • Debt: He's made enemies over the years, and some debts are catching up with him, making him vulnerable to blackmail or threats.

Goals: Jasper's ultimate goal is to pull off the perfect con, one that would set him up for life and allow him to retire in comfort far from the prying eyes of the law.

Likes: Good whiskey, a well-played hand of poker, and the thrill of outsmarting those who underestimate him.

Dislikes: Being double-crossed, nosy lawmen, and anyone who thinks they can see through his schemes.

Other Important Information: Jasper has a network of informants and contacts scattered across frontier towns, giving him access to valuable information and potential allies in his cons. He also has a knack for spotting a mark from a mile away, often sizing up potential targets with a shrewd eye.

Physical Information: 5’4”, 150lbs, curly brown hair, tan skin, brown eyes, two bullet hole scars on her left shoulder both front and back, noose scars around her neck.

Personality: Mousie can seem very quiet and timid because of her silence. She is often overlooked in a crowd and written off by many for her lack of speech. Her overall aura is one of silence and stillness to those who do not know her well. In actuality she is very mischievous, often pulling small tricks on people and big cons on those she doesn’t like. She is very talkative to those who know her best and is very lively when among friends.

Known Biography: Ida was born on a Sunday, right in the middle of church. The whole congregation heard her screaming as she came out and she was dubbed very healthy. Unfortunately her father soon found out she wasn’t not his daughter. Sent away during the night with her real dad, Samuel, a freed slave who had been working in the fields on the property, took her to Arkansas.

Her “father” sent men after them to kill Samuel and get rid of the abomination and they had to move from town to town trying to doge the bounty hunters after them. When she was 12 the bounty hunters caught up with them and strung her and Samuel up on a tree. The last thing she remembered is her Father’s face going slack and a gunshot as her body fell.

When she woke she found a local gunman had helped her, her father had died. He took her in as long as she cooked for him and took care of his horse. She found it difficult to talk after that because of damage done by the noose so communicated by sign only. When she was 18 she visited her mother, the next day when she left her father’s body was found flayed of skin out in the field Samuel had worked so diligently.

She fell in with the McGraw Outfit when she was 19 and her gunhand friend had been killed in a shootout. She was very good at pulling cons, gathering intel, and getting into places most couldn’t because she was usually largely ignored by others. The thing she was best at though was making people who don’t want to talk, talk, by any means necessary. Usually a knife.

Since the Botched Job: She’s been living on a very small ranch working on taming wild horses.

She’s killed 13 men and helped with each successful heist since she had joined the McGraw outfit. She is also guilty of stealing and either releasing or re-selling 48 horses. There might be a few tortured dirty sheriffs on her hands too but no one could pin it on her.

Honor:  She’s around a 4, she doesn’t harm children, and she counts children up to 18. She also never hurts slaves or people who experience racism unless they hurt her.

Horse:  Silence is her horses name. He stands at 17 hands tall and is only tame for Mousie. [img height=200]https://i.imgur.com/tpFBOic.jpgp/img]

Weapons: A set of filet knives with bone handles she stole from her mother’s home after she came back and killed her husband.
Hunting knife from (insert person once she has connections)
Three throwing knives from her father Samuel.
Small pistol from her gunhand friend who cared for her.

Skills:

  • Stealth
  • Acting
  • Ability to not get caught
  • Good at conning people into doing what she wants
  • Appearing innocent and sweet
  • Good at throwing knives
  • Filleting flesh from living creatures and keeping them alive for a long time.

Weaknesses:

  • Difficult to Communicate with
  • Often thought of as dumb or uneducated
  • Very often easy to forget about
  • Easy to overpower at close range
  • Difficulty to gain loyalty of
  • Secretive
  • Often going off on her own
  • Horrible shot at close range
  • Can be very obnoxious if she is trying to get people to understand her.

Goals:  She wants a family, it’s her biggest secret and something she knows will probably never happen. She has had a crush on Earl McGraw since she met him. She also wants her own small ranch where she can care for horses. She’ll settle for a man who doesn’t mind her love for knives and Using them.

Likes:  Night time, horses, dogs, cats, snakes, bones, skulls, fresh bread, riding, she likes men that take charge and aren’t a love ‘em and leave ‘em type, she prefers to do the leaving. She likes flowers but won’t tell anyone that lest they think she’s soft. She likes knives and obsidian arrow heads. She also has an obsession with blood and how it pools and runs on the skin.

Dislikes: Dislikes law enforcement, they are usually the biggest racists in town. Loud men who can’t support their own bluster. Spiders, ticks, and flies. The high summer sun. She dislikes rabbit stew but will eat it if she has to. Animal abusers.

Announcement

Grizzly, WickedLittleWitch and I have taken over as GMs from Gnothi, as she is stepping down. She did a wonderful job setting things up and has revealed to us the path of the story. We'll be filling in the gaps, but we'll be keeping true to her original idea. We're keeping recruitment open for now, and we're moving on to the next chapter of the story very soon!

Edit: Wickedlittlewitch has left the game, so the GMs are now Grizzly and myself.

Madam Striga

Hello all! Are you still recruiting and/or are their any character niches that haven't been touched on?

Hello Madam Striga, we're still recruiting! Perfect timing as the gang has arrived at the camp, and we just started chapter 2, where they got word that Earl was captured and put in jail. Very easy for you to come in.

Hmm, we have a fairly well-rounded crew so far, so we're open to most anything. We have a doctor, two native American women, a few who are good at sneaking around and doing recon, some good shots, one good at explosives, survivalists, ect. But fairly open to whatever you can dream up, and it doesn't matter if someone else has that same niche.

If you need any help, feel free to ask.

Ok, colour me interested for sure.

I was thinking that seeing as I am a bit late to the party that my character was one of those captured and tossed into jail. Only getting out to discover of course that Earl left a letter about the new job and where to meet which of course my character will go to, but will just be later than everyone else ??? sound plausible?

If so I will start putting together a CS over the next few days.

Hey you *winks and playfully nudges*

I did get the character sheet off to you all a few days back so it should have been on that but I am going for the full five years :D So there'll be lots of grudges she'll be holding when she gets to the meeting house.

If it doesn't work, no bother at all - I can change up her CS - she's not written in stone ... yet

Nope the character looks good. I wrote that before I had a chance to read your CS. I'll be PMing you shortly.

Brilliant stuff :)

Will post her up to the approved section too and give the thread a read through.

Mercy Lane aka Whiskey
Mercy Lane
'Whiskey'

Character Name and Aliases:  Born as Mercy Lane - known as Whiskey since the age of sixteen

Writer Name:  Kendra

Face Claim:  Clara Paget

Age:  28 years or thereabouts - no certificate confirming or disproving it

Physical Information:  5 foot 6 inches /  mesmerising blue eyes but don't let those orbs fool you into thinking she's a lady/ copper red hair - all her own and not a drop from a bottle / long and straight, sometimes she wears a few braids, sometimes she just let's it hang loose - exceptin' when she is on a job - then that hair is pulled right back / Always has a not-exactly-clean look about her, as if she had a bath a week ago and not seen a tub since / Bullet wound in right back shoulder / knife wound just right of naval / bullet wound in left thigh - bit of a limp ever since. Her back is a mass of scars from multiple floggings in the penitentiary.

Personality:  There's a silly old wives tale that a redhead has a hot temper, when you get to meet Whiskey - you know it's no wives tale. She has a smart mouth that always lands her in trouble, two fists that get in a bit deeper, and a love of fighting that would rival any mans. The only time Whiskey is thinking is when she is aiming to shoot, she is a hot head. Never asks questions - just barrels straight on in as if she knows the answers. Whiskey got her name from the booze she can put away faster and harder than any man she has met yet ... or woman. She is good for a laugh, and one you want on your team if you need a steady long shot or a close encounter.

Known Biography:  It was said that she was born to preaching folk in the wilds of Wyoming. All that Mercy knows for sure is that the wagon train they were apart of never made it to the fort they were meant for, and them preaching folk of hers never got where they were meanin' to go. She up-scuttled the lot when she decided it was time to come into the world. And she is still up-scuttling the best laid plans to day. She don't know who gave her the name but it was with her when she started remembering, as far back as she can recall people just called her Mercy Lane.

Of course, there is also the story that her mama was a nobody who pushed the child out into the world down a backstreet, crying for help, pleading for mercy from anyone that walked by. Her earliest memory is stealing an apple, and getting hauled before the magistrate by the store owner who swore it was the last straw, that something had to be done about all the vagrant children. So Mercy got sent to Texas, to a convent school there where children were adopted in order to help with work. Several different 'homes' later and Mercy was back before another magistrate for stealing, fighting, cussing and threatening the man who had adopted her with a knife.

It didn't seem to matter what gender she was, or how old either - they flung her into a jail that had adult men and women, and people she knew were downright insane to boot. Seemed you didn't have to break the law to get in to one of them places. For another four years Mercy was in and out of these until some goody too shoes decided they would try to reform the penal institutions so that juveniles didn't get lumped in with hardened criminals. Mercy promised to be good, and not put a foot wrong again.

That was when she met Alistair Scarsdale, a veteran from the war he took her under his wing and showed her how to shoot. Not just a pistol which he figured any jackanape could do but long range, as he used to be during the war. She was good at it too, real good and it made her dangerous. Up till then she had been pretty sweet with her double blades, getting in for a close encounter and a swift dance but now she could have her pickings of who she took out. She was a gun for hire and her name got known.  Alistair died from exposure on a bitter cold winter, waiting for Whiskey to return from a job. The very one that had gotten her shot in the damn leg.

A year later and she met Earl, or he purposefully met with her. He had known Alistair and was doing him a favour by taking her in. There was something about Earl that Whiskey liked straight up, and she didn't like a lot of people. Ok, she didn't like anyone - Alistair and Earl were pretty much it. The rest of the world she tolerated. She became his sharp shooter, holding off in the distance to keep an eye out. To pick off anyone getting too close or looking ... odd.

Since the Botched Job:  At twenty three Whiskey during what was meant to be the heist of the century, had a sense that something was not on the up and up. True she wasn't one for thinking, and she trusted Earl completely but she couldn't shake the feeling. For some reason that to this day she still don't understand, she was not up high ready to pick someone off. She was put down on the ground close to the action. Somewhere she hadn't been with Earl's crew before. Shit went sideways fast, and Whiskey took a shot to the shoulder. She went down in more ways than one that day. Down with a wound and down in the slammer.

For six months they argued over what should be done with her, she had a record a mile long. This time there would be no goody two shoes, but she was saved from a hanging for being a woman an' all. Five years ... five years they kept her locked up and on the day of her release, a stranger met her giving her an envelope. She read as badly as she swore but Earl knowing as much put what he had to say in as few words as possible. She was wanted and she knew where to go. She always trusted him, but her time in prison has made her a bit less trusting. Made her a bit less inclined to act first and think next week. She's gotten handier with her fists, and blades and is simply itching to get her rifle back but Whiskey doesn't believe for a second that their last job was on the level, someone sold them out and she would find out who.

Specialty or Role:  Sharp shooter / Fire starter - picks a fight for distraction purposes

Notoriety:  Whiskey is ridiculously well known - from being in one penitentiary after another over the years - every duck that walks sideways knows who she is and what she is capable of doing. There are always rumours that she killed a man, or two or three - she is infamously known for her use with the rifle, as well as being able to drink anyone under the table. There has never been a wanted poster up for her however, no matter that for the record - she has shot seventeen people, knifed twelve and killed four.

Honor:  There is no honour among thieves and Whiskey hasn't an ounce of the stuff. Maybe she once had 100% loyalty to Earl but that got shaken on the last job, she ain't sure about him no more. So I'd say her honour ... that would be less than zero.

Horse:  She's been inside for five years, but make no mistake on her way to the meeting house - she'll pick one up - and will call the horse what she's called all her horses over the years  - Bullseye

Weapons:
  • Two daggers - Jack and Jill - one on each hip
  • Colt SAA (Peacemaker) - underarm holster - Earl will have kept this for her.
  • Double-barrel coach gun - Betty - Earl better have kept this for her.
  • Winchester model 1873 lever action - picks it up on her way to the gang
Skills:
  • keen eyesight - needs it for sharp shooting
  • Sharp shooting - long distance steady shot (closest thing the wild west will have to a sniper)
  • Sharp shooting - long distance and close range moving target
  • Up close and personal knife fight
  • Inability to get drunk - has drunk more people under the table than she cares to admit to. Where she got her nickname.

Weaknesses:
  • rushes in where fools and angels fear to tread
  • her face is seriously too well known by everyone
  • hot tempered - loves a good bar fight ... or any kind of a fight
  • can ride a horse but damn don't expect her to sit one for several hours
  • gets right back up after being knocked down ... stubborn
  • crap at cards but plays anyway

Goals:  An early grave - what else is there?

Likes:  Sex - seriously she likes it with anyone, she don't mind once it isn't too weird. Whiskey - it got to be Irish and it got to be single malt.

Dislikes:  The world in general - it is too hard.

Other Important Information:  Not at this time.

Hey Jugg,

was having the very same problem with the bookmarking, another group told me about the alert button which isn't the same but sort of.
At the top right hand of the page are buttons for reply, mark unread, print and no alerts or emails.
click on the last one. It will give you a choice of alerts only, no alerts, alerts and emails etc.

Can't wait to see your character.
